Open Gameday Thread, 3/2

From the Chronicle:

Ted Uhlaender, one of general manager Brian Sabean's top advisers, attended the White Sox's game against the Diamondbacks in Tucson and saw third baseman Joe Crede homer off Arizona's Max Scherzer.

"Scherzer is going to be on the Diamondbacks roster in a couple of years. So we should probably lock Crede up with a four-year deal," Sabean said. "We'll draft a second-rounder with the fifth pick, and use the savings on Crede."

I made up the quote from Sabean, but it's there in the original article if you read between the lines.

With the ridiculous amount of pessimistic speculation on this site (which is fully reasonable), you'd think the giants couldn't really prove that it would be even WORSE than we thought this year, but all I'm seeing is that I'm going to have to choose to deny that games even happened when our starting pitcher isn't named Matt or Tim.

I was just gonna bring up that Denker was impressing me this game-- and even BEFORE he hit that homerun, I was quickly online trying to find his minor league stats. Why haven't we heard more about him? And, yeah, why the hell has he been stuck in A-ball for 3 friggin' seasons?

I also like Capellan's attitude on the mound. He seemed a little fiery. He didn't pitch all that great, but the Giants, for a long time now, have been in dire need of some real personalities. I'd love to have a Carlos Zambrano-type nutjob on the Giants.

that's like saying, hey this kid is 7'0 and usually falls down when walking, but hey don't tell randy johnson that tall people can't pitch!!

Let him try out AAA first..
Sure maybe he would do ok in ST but he's likely not going to be on the team next year, and he's not a really interesting prospect like Sergio Romo is either that the team wants to further evaluate.

Re: Let him try out AAA first..
i know they use st to evaluate talent....but shoot, after being the bad luck pitcher for the defenders last season, they could give garrett one inning in one st game...sort of like a thank you for sucking it up

williamson is not gonna make this team either...hes headed for fresno or a straight release

and im sorry, after zito's awful outing, they should let every farmhand take an inning

126 million and the guy comes into camp looking like he spent the entire offseason chasing pussy and meditating

Re: Let him try out AAA first..
If Williamson put together a good spring you know he'd be on the roster.  He still could be on the roster even if he puts up a mediocre spring the way this team is run.  Zito isn't the only one who had a bad start to the season.  Oakland's Joe Blanton has allowed 6 runs.  J. Morillo (whoever that is) has the same ERA as Zito as well.  As long as he's not hurt and as long as he'll stretch himself out next start to more pitches he'll be fine.

After being the bad luck pitcher for conneticut maybe he'll just move up a level?  If I were in the minors I'd be just as happy to do that than anything.  And who knows, maybe he's in the minor league camp but just isn't getting innings in the games.

Creative arbitration
In the Cactus League you can call the infield fly rule with 2 out.

Re: Creative arbitration
Also with nobody on base. Actually you can call it between innings and during pitching changes. Its to speed the games up.

Checking the box score, Lewis was the only one to play the whole game and he played all 3 OF spots.

I wonder if there were any White Sox scouts in the crowd?

He's young, he's cheap, and all he does is hit righties and get on base. There's no way you can trade him for a rental.

Also, the White Sox already have a similar player, Jerry Owens, penciled in to start at CF/leadoff. Owens is unproven, but so is Lewis, so he doesn't provide them much insurance. I'm hoping - okay, praying - Sabean's trying to push Roberts on them as Proven Vet Insurance. Then Lewis could platoon in LF with Davis and get 400+ AB's as he should. Nothing in Sabean's past gives me any reason to believe he's thinking this way, but a man can dream!

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 3/2
I'm going to dream that too! I'm even going to make a wish at 11:11, and then again 12:12. If fails I'm going to do best Warren Oates impression and go get the head of Brain Sabean!

Owens really is not similar to Lewis
Owens is the typical fast, "gritty" player who does the little things and plays the game the right way. Walks and OBP are not part of playing the game the right way.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 3/2
Timpner and Anderson, Matos or Valdez for Crede. EME could be a part of it and I'm ok with that. It's painful to think of Freddie in the field but for some reason I hate to give up on him. That said, the only reason not to trade Lewis for Crede if that's what the Sox really want is that you believe his upside is higher than Schierholtz. Trading Lewis gives Nate a shot at enough at bats to make it worthwhile to bring him up now. Crede is -- a comment on our sad state -- a reasonable gamble. If he's really healthy, he'll do well enough to net us a decent draft choice when we let him go.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 3/2
Meant this to go in the Lewis trade speculation thread. Forgot to say that, of course, trading Roberts is an even better result but it seemed improbable that the White Sox wouldn't be going young that I didn't even mention it.
