Keith Law's Giants Minor League Complex Visit
Not sure what the etiquette is for this since it's an Insider article. But as long as I don't copy & paste the whole thing, we're good, right? (Ed. note: Unfortunately, no.) I normally don't like Law, but then he ranted & raved about our latest draft so he's grown on me.
The link to the article is here. It's got stuff on Villalona, Alderson, and Fairley, and it's an interesting read.

Cool... too bad about Fairley though. He is supposed to be quite raw, isn't he? It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to take it slow with him.

Fairley is a long-term project. The Giants knew that when they drafted him. This tidbit is no surprise, and no cause for alarm.

Fairley is recovering from a shoulder problem that was bothering him last year, which may be why he's struggling now.

I don't have a lot of faith in Keith Law's views on anything. He may be my least favorite in a lot of unfavorables over at ESPN. He also tends to make snap judgements way too soon on far too little information.

Yeah, I like how he said his breaking ball isn't consistent enough, but also said it was only his second game of spring training in the previous sentence. Whatever.

Law
I have to disagree. Given Keith Law's background with the Blue Jays and Baseball Prospectus, I'm sure he can crunch numbers with the best of 'em to draw conclusions based on broad data. But that's not really his job with ESPN. He basically travels around the country scouting prospects and future draftees. That means he has to make quicker, scouting-based judgments.
I think his opinions are pretty reasonable myself, though, of course, nobody's infallible.

Even Tim
I did see him on CBS 5 news wearing an unfortunate sweater. Looked like his grandmother dressed him.

You know, it's entirely possible his grandma DID dress him.
Then wouldn't you feel a little bit bad?

I'd feel bad. I'd feel bad for him and that $12 check Granny mailed to him for his birthday.

If his grandma dressed him
perhaps that would explain why he (hopefully only used to) wear bell bottoms. (I remember Grant linking to an article a while back that mentioned that.) Those things went out of style a long time ago.

As long as Fairley improves as the season goes along, we'll probably agree that's as good as we can hope for this year. It is probably a certainty two of our first four draft picks will be used on outfielders.
I'm surprised there's nothing on Bumgarner or any other noteworthy players. I agree with Law's assessment that Monell could be more than what is expected. He showed some good offensive numbers before going stone cold in the AZL.

Also, don't give up on Tyler LaTorre at catcher. One eyewitness in Salem said the team's pitchers MUCH preferred to throw to him than to Jackson "Overdraft" Williams.

Ya? I thought LaTorre was basically over.

He may be, Chris; I can't say for sure. In 95 AB's he hit .316 (*insert small sample size caveat here), so I presume he hasn't failed miserably yet. I was just passing along the anecdotal account that his pitchers were more comfortable throwing to him than to Mr.Williams, and that perhaps that was a good sign about his defensive capabilities. FWIW, and all that. As a lefty-hitting catcher, I'm keeping my eye on his progress - if any.

Recall that I rally around our minor leaguers with an unflagging spirit. :) I'd be really pleased to see LaTorre emerge in this catcher-thin system.

Wow, great news about Timmy II. Nothing is written in stone as Law says but I can't help thinking Timmy II will begin the year with Augusta at least.
The Fairley bit is disappointing though not surprising to me. All we heard about him was great tools, great, great great, but raw. But this. But that. Thank god the kid's still a teenager so he'll work it out.
And if it helps I can make a vat of my favorite vegetarian dish and send to AnVil; black beans cooked with garlic and onions, fresh salsa, light sour cream, and fresh cheese. Yum. And good for you.
