First FanPost about Joe Crede (and 397th Diary)
Noticed another article about us & Joe Crede (Sorry for inflicting upon you!). It doesn't give any new information about whether the trade will happen or not, but does give info on what both teams may be looking for in the deal & how far apart we seem.
San Francisco, the most likely suitor for Crede, and the Sox have disparate evaluations that carry ramifications for both sides.
A talent evaluator familiar with both teams said the Sox were miffed the Giants' offers for Crede included since-released pitcher Scott Williamson; pitcher Randy Messenger, who was optioned to Triple-A Fresno last week; and veteran outfielder Dave Roberts.
The source said the Giants believe Sox general manager Ken Williams' asking price -- one of the Giants' top prospects and a serviceable young reliever -- was too steep for a 29-year-old infielder coming off season-ending back surgery.
At least we seem to be offering around value for Crede (In other words, garbage) rather than something useful. If the White Sox are really expecting a top prospect & servicable reliever then that's ridiculous & you'd have to think even Sabean isn't that stupid! Knowing him he'll cave & offer up something useful, but hopefully we stick with our offers of garbage or just stop wasting our time.

Stick to your guns, Sabean.
That sounds like a fair package to me.

Crede
Crede's hitting about .080 this spring with a bunch of errors. What makes the White Sox think they deserve ANYTHING for him?? Just taking on his 5 million dollar salary should be good enough for them.
2008 Rolaids Relief winner: Randy Messenger
I wonder if the reliever was Sanchez?
It's nice to see that they're at least trying to move Dave Roberts.

The cost for Crede comes down more and more by the day, especially with Josh Fields seeming to have found his stroke. Sox fans are clamoring loudly for Fields to start...ultimately Kenny is going to find himself forced into choice. I think Crede is likely just dealing with rust and will be fine overall, but I'm still not willing to waste more than what Sabes has already offered...all right...Kline? Chulk? I could be okay with either of those.
As for the Dodgers, they just got word that 3B prospect Tony Abreu has been cleared to play. With him adequate to serve as Nomar's backup until LaRoche returns in June, there's just no reason for them to look outside.
The pessimist in me wonders if Sabean is gathering up his precious gems for the REAL third base prize: Brandon Inge!
March is the cruellest month, breeding
Centerfielders out of the dead land, mixing
Molinas and Ortmeiers, stirring
Dull Rowands with spring training...
Don’t threaten us that way.
Talk like that will get us the last 4 months articles and posts with Crede’s name struck out and Inge’s crayola crayoned in then ran again.

Is it mean that I laughed at this? Oh, poor White Sox, miffed that they're being offered crap in exchange for dung. How awful.

Crap for Dung?

Sabean is actually playing this pretty smart.
I never thought I'd be using "Sabean" and "smart" in the same sentence . . .
Brian Anderson: I can has spot in Fresno 'pen?
A few short weeks ago, I would have gladly traded Durham for Crede straight up. Small sample size and all that, but now Durham at 2B and Franny or Velez at 3B sounds better than Franny at 2B and Crede at 3B.
2008 Giants: A steaming pile of scrap!
If I were on that...
I'd rename that the "Durham has a big comeback year and Sabean trades him for a few good prospects or a great prospect by the end of the year."
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
Um.. trade for what?
If Durham is doing well, Sabes will have flights of fancy thinking that his team will go all the way. If he does still trade him, we'll end up with Dave Roberts long lost brother for 4 years, 25 million, and who, btw, plays centerfield to held shore up a wall banged up Rowand.

Bold prediction
I think his 2005 numbers look about right: .290/.356/.429
If he has a normal "Ray Ray" year, the team will be a lot less putrid.
2008 Giants: A steaming pile of scrap!
That’s a mighty wobbly looking limb to me. Goofus you have bigger pair then I do for choosing those number for Durham. I salute your courage here .

PHEW!!!
Lets just say, I am ELATED Sabes isn't betting the farm on Crede, in his favored means for trading. Accardo for a Hillenbrand rental. Nathan, Liriano, Bosner for an AJ rental. Etc.

Yeah, he has his moments, like last year when he traded away Matt Morris's contract for Rajai. But then again he was the one who signed him to that ridiculous contract.

Sabean
every day that passes brings a new level of desperation for Sabean to do something though. The team looks like it will be one of the worst in baseball, if not THE worst, and I think he'll eventually give in and try to achieve respectability with a deal or two before spring training ends. It's just a matter of time before he gives in and offers more than he should for someone like Crede or Inge.

Not First!
I have broken through to the other side!
If they can manage to trade Roberts, I will be elated. I like Roberts, but we need to find out if any of the younger guys can contribute to the next good Giants team. My first post on this side is very fundamental and noncontroversial.
Cruddy
Still, you can't blame Kenny Williams for being a bit miffed at the Giants' offer. A pitcher they released, a pitcher they farmed out early and a contract they're trying to dump. It's like he's trying to play Williams for a sucker. Not everyone is Dave Littlefield, Brian. You don't have to insult his intelligence when you make him an offer.
Randy Messenger: Client Number 10 "Glad they stopped at nine!!"
I don't know, I think Kenny Williams is insulting Sabes's intelligence by requesting a "top prospect" AND a serviceable reliever for someone with as mediocre a track record and as tenuous a health status as Joe Crede.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
+1
Kenny Williams is a moron - anyone who actively praises the 2007 version of Darin Erstad needs to undergo psychological evaulation - and Brian Sabean isn't the brightest bulb either. Watching them work out a deal is probably like watching two 4 year olds throw temper tantrums.

After reading things like...
From: South Side Sox
"I can say from experience
that Giant's fans are, on the whole, morons.
I would equate Giant's fans with Cubs fans, on the whole. And the fact that their stadium is a social experience, a place to see and be seen, makes the comparison all the more appropriate."

"obviously. there are some smart and insightful posters/authors over there. but there are quite a few who aren't. compared to the rest of the SB nation, mccovey is on the low end. weep if you want. it's my opinion of the site. i don't think this really rises to the level of someone needing to argue or defend. what i think about the site should be quite irrelevant."
I hope Crede leaves and does well just so they can choke on it. Throw in Fields, Swisher, Konerko, and Thome all coming down with mysteriously simultaneous groin injuries and I will be a happy camper.
Light hitting CFs are the new black.
SS Sox
They're in for the same crappy year that we're going to have. They'll have a better record, but they'll be 20 games behind the Tigers and the Indians. The reason they're angry with us is because they think if we knew anything about baseball we'd be offering Villalona, Lincecum and Cain for one of their "superb" ballplayers. That's what happens when you've been listening to Hawk Harrelson for the last decade or two. You're bound to get dumber.

Vaguely pleased
I think we all know that the Giants aren't going to be good this year. So I'm actually very happy to see that Sabean isn't giving anything up for any quick fixes that won't actually fix anything. This might just bode well moving into the future.

Along the same lines.
One step achieved. Only 10 more to go. Assuming the Front Office does not relapse. This vaguely pleases me as well.
Idiot Sox Fans
I keep hearing dumb remarks from these guys screaming about how Joe Crede is the next coming of Ty Cobb because he did well in the 2005 playoffs and Dave Roberts is garbage. Apparently they don't know about "The Steal."
Roberts made a number of contributions to the Red Sox' first World Series win in 86 years. The most notable was his stolen base against the Yankees in the ALCS Game 4. The Red Sox were facing elimination in the bottom of the ninth inning, down 4 runs to 3. Kevin Millar drew a walk from Yankees closer Mariano Rivera. Roberts, who had not played in ten days, came in to pinch run. Rivera threw to first base three times (the last almost picked off Roberts); on the next pitch, Roberts stole second base. Bill Mueller followed with a single, Roberts scored, and the Sox went on to win in twelve innings and begin their run of eight straight wins, culminating in Boston's first World Series title since 1918. Roberts' ninth-inning steal is often referred to as "The Steal of the Century", "The Steal Heard Round the World", or simply "The Steal."[
