Welcome to the new McCovey Chronicles and SB Nation
Hello McCovey Chronicles,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei and I'm one of the guys who helped build this new home for y'all. I'm here to help you get adjusted and give you a quick tour of what is new and what has changed. Also, if you have questions or trouble with the new system, I'll be around to answer them and point you in the right direction.
Before we get started, I want to let you know that you're only the third blog in the SB Nation family to make this transition. We still consider this a beta platform so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. In fact, we hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter. All you need to do is email bugreport@sbnation.com.
Lets get started...
What Has Changed
SB Nation network accounts (the big change)
Many readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account that they could use on any SB Nation blog. We agreed and have created one SB Nation network account so that you only have to login once to gain access to many blogs. We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs. However, we didn't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain the friendly confines of our communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog you want to actively participate on. It's an easy 2-click process, but it means accepting the different community guidelines that each blog sets out for itself. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. Don't worry - you won't lose all of your old comments and diaries. We have created a simple process for you to claim your old blog account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new. The reason is that every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition and some of them have the same username that you do. We tried to be as fair as possible about deciding who gets to keep which name using a formula that takes into account length of membership, amount of activity and how recently you've been active. The important thing is that whatever name you have will be retroactively put on all of your old comments and diaries. Some of you already have multiple accounts on different SB Nation blogs; we've got you covered too because you can claim more than one old blog account.
Alright, now that I've explained all that - let's get you started:
Click Here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
FanPosts (the section formerly known as Diaries)
First we changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary we inherited that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for *fans* and these are the blog *posts* y'all make. So we called them FanPosts. Next time you're at the bar and you're telling someone to go check out your sports opinion online, you don't have to suggest they read your diaries.
But the changes go deeper than the new name. FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - they now include your avatar so you get more credit for the time you invest in writing great posts. We also built a new editor that has a WYSIWYG view for easy formatting and auto-saving of drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you write on the web. And in addition to adding basic tags, you can now associate teams, players and games with our special auto-complete tools. These will put your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, if you're writing in HTML mode we do not auto-detect paragraphs from line breaks. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips or take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.
IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember that you have to put the <p></p> tags around each paragraph you want so your text doesn't run together.
What Is New
Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster
McCovey Chronicles now has all the basic information about your favorite team and every other team in the MLB. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so now we special pages that will aggregate all the blog posts written about games, players and teams.
Auto-refreshing Comments
You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the 'c' key on your keyboard. If you're cycling through the comments you can just press the 'r' key to reply. And there are other helpful keyboard shortcuts like that listed at the top of each comments section.
Recommending Comments
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.
Flagging Comments
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. No one else can see those flaggings, but the moderators can.
FanShots
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote and you don't need to write a full FanPost. We've got you covered and we made these quick hits really easy. Now you have a tool that is designed for sharing YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter and gatherers of Giants material, install the bookmarklet to share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
Archives
It's much easier to go find that post about a certain deadline trade or a playoff game. Browse by year and month.
Avatars
When you upload an image as your avatar we'll use it on your profile, your FanPosts and all your comments.
Network profiles
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs you're a member of.
Network bar
The bar up at the top will stay with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name. Click that and you'll find your profile. There is a button next to that for jumping to your dashboard with links for editing your settings, profile, account and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. Once we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way of navigating between the blogs you're a member of.
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made so take a careful look around and explore this new system.
We appreciate your patience as we jump into this beta together and know you'll help us get this new platform ready for all the other SB Nation blogs.
And in case you missed it, you'll want to start with this:
Click Here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Alright let's see how this goes.
A question right off the bat too, what sizes are optimal for avatars?
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
anything square works best
and the largest size we display it is 165 x 165

A question/suggestion...
I'm sure these have both come up before.
The Question:
Is it always going to be a preview then post comment? That'll get annoying during gameday threads.
The Suggestion:
I suggested this on AN but the thread was about a week and a half old at the time. Is there something you can design into the schedule part where you can "sign up" for a game if you are attending. You can see who from your blog is attending and also who from the opposing team's blog is attending and perhaps line things up for meetings better.
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
answers
right now we're keeping the previews. AN had that functionality all last year and it didn't seem to slow down the game threads much. because we don't allow editing comments, the preview allows you to make sure you got your info right the first time. I've found that by using tab and return you can post comments very efficiently. type subject, tab, type description, tab, return, return.
and that suggestion is a *really* cool one that we'll absolutely consider adding in.

The tab is something...
I just found out too. And yes that does work pretty well. I guess it's just something to get used to like everything.
I am really liking refreshing comments lol.

I like clockwerks' orange. Heh heh. Heh.
Serious question: how do we link to the other SB Nation sites even if we haven't signed up to post on them? The links used to be on the right hand column.
Also, in the "First Brian Bocock Joke on the New Site" pool, I have 8:47pm Thursday night. Do we still get paid in McCovey Bucks or are we using Euros?

Wow...
this is going to take a few days. I had to create an entirely new name to even participate. It looks nice.
I was able to claim my name..
Back when AN changed I did. I just went through and reclaimed all my others.
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
Oh crap...
I gotta remember to claim notgroug...eh...I mean...not..notgroug.
You deserve to be struck out, when your first name's a verb.
Bug?
I can't change my signature under Edit Profile. I did, and hit update, but it's not reflected in my posts right now.
Eagerly awaiting Crazy Crab Bobblehead Night on 7/18.
Hey Grant!
Where are we supposed to be looking for swagger now? WE NEED TO KNOW!
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
Who needs swagger when you've got speed and defense as an excuse for your offensive failures?!?
Adoptive papa to Omar...so basically I'm screwed.

Question again.
Is the "My Dashboard" supposed to take you to www.mccoveychronicles.com/admin?
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
yes
if you join more than one blog that dashboard will be a quick view of all the fanposts and fanshots you've published across the sb nation network. we'll probably add more stuff there in the future like quick ways of seeing replies to your comments, etc.

Another suggestion now.
How about multiple websites on our profiles? If we wanted we could then share any person webpages we may have and share any social networking sites we wanted to, not just one.
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
I like the new features, but the one thing that bugs me is that the real estate for the articles on the front page has been reduced considerably. Is there a way to maybe compact or reduce the fanposts column?
Durham? I hardly know 'im!

Officially a Pile of Crap
Features are snitching, complaining, whining about other posters? 1/3 of the screen is splattered with "ads". Does anybody over the age of 8 really need avatars?
You sure Larry Baer is not trying to create a ballpark experience for the Pier 39 blogger?
Nice job.

Eh
This new version is too cluttered.
Idolizing the Nuschler Face since April 8, 1986 / GIANTSPACE™ returns!
Alright another thing. Is this search feature going to be it? I remember we could search for a certain user's posts, search the main page posts or search the diaries, search the comments or just the main posts, etc. on the old site. It helped out when you were looking for a diary comment about something. Are we just going to be able to search the main page posts?
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
we will be improving search
along with improving the profiles to display comments & replies, search is at the top of the list

Another thing clockwerks..
Nothing that's a bug, but if you type a capital W as the first letter in your message, it'll partially dissapear out of the message box.
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
You should be able to claim your accounts from any of the other SBNation accounts.
http://www.sbnation.com/account/migrate_accounts
Is that what you were asking?
it's me, JP
did all that, but the ones i was linking havent been updated to this new style yet. hence, none of them show up in "my blogs". so putting two and four together, i would assume they wont link till they are updated to this fancy shmancy new format. lambaste me if i am wrong...
that is correct

So you guys
Want to see a cool thing? If you go back and check out old posts, they use the signature you had at the time.
So all my Nate Schierholtz 3rdbasenothatwon'tworkness will be preserved for all posterity. Man, I feel good about that.
I looked up Steve Kline in the dictionary. He wasn't there. If he was, it would have said "pretty okay"
So..
Does that mean that if you don't have a signature of it there now, you aren't opposed to him playing 3rd base?

A suggestion
When you preview a post, can it go under and be tabbed under the post that you're replying to? Otherwise it's confusing, like right above when I was responding to WalrusMan and it looked like I was responding to myself.
I looked up Steve Kline in the dictionary. He wasn't there. If he was, it would have said "pretty okay"
I've noticed that as well..
When you post a comment to something it doesn't indent in until you click post. If you're replying to the original poster or to the first commenter, it looks the same.
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
This might only apply to myself, but is there any possible way to change hot keys? I use Opera and "z" is already used to go back a page in the browser. I mean, I could change the hot key for Opera, but that'd require work on my part. We all know that's not happening.
(I'm only sorta kidding)
Durham? I hardly know 'im!
Ugh I didn't even think about that.

Am I just imagining
that the advertisements are not in a more obnoxiously prominent position now?
Psycho killer, qu'est-ce que c'est?
The ads used to be in a nice no man's land between a post and comments, you could always just skip right past that part of the screen.
I thought that...
A lot more annoying than something above the screen (like it was before) and something on the right side of the screen (which you can train yourself just not to look at).
Coming to you from the Land of Many Beers
Don't know if questions are still being answered
But is there a schedule for when each site will transition over, and can we see it? I just want to know when some of the other sites I frequent, NinersNation and FearTheFin, will be updated. Thanks!
schedule for the transition
we don't have an exact timeline to share for when each blog will come over, but generally non-MLB blogs will be migrated next month

I like the new site, except for one thing
The area for the main posts (Grant's) on the home page is way too narrow. From a usability standpoint, it makes it hard to get your bearings on the main page of the site - your eyes aren't sure what's the important content. Obviously, the eye should be drawn to the main posts, and they should get more real estate.
Once you click on a post, the left-hand column goes away, and the site becomes much, much more readable. When I click on a post, I kind of feel like someone took the vise off my head.
I agree, and I've made it known that this is a comment complaint.

Howdy Giants fans
just wanted to say hello from your friends at "Viva El Birdos"...we Cardinal fans just got migrated today and the consensus seems to be positive, though our sidebar turned out to be Phillie Burgundy rather than Cardinal Red...they gotta fix that...otherwise, it's okay...drop by to say hello.
WTF?
How long do these "recommended" posts stay at the top? The site is bloated enough without having to wade through outdated posts. As it stands now, one already has to scroll through 1 vertical screen of banners, flash, colored vertical and horizontal rule lines (which went away in the 90s btw) before being able to access any content. Keeping the old stuff around for more than a few days is really off-putting and gives the site a stale aura.
by E Ticket on Mar 23, 2008 9:09 AM PDT reply actions
Two weeks
FanPosts are eligible to appear in the recommended sidebar slot for up to two weeks after they've been published. But the list will always contain the most recently published recommended FanPosts -- so, as Natto said, if you want to bump off the old posts, you can start recommending new ones.
I'm one of the guys that built the new SB Nation
Can we view more than 10 fanposts at a time? People seems to be diary happy the last couple of days and the some of the better ones aren't lasting a day on the main page.
