Open Gameday Thread, 3/12
Things will change around here...tomorrow. The site will be taken offline for a few hours sometime tomorrow evening.
For now, though, it's time to Lincecum on and feel the noize. If I were to write a rap song about him, it would include a passage like this:
"Blowing heat up in the spot, just 23 years old
Fighting through groin pains like he was Tracey Gold."
That's if I were to write a rap song about him. I still have to finish my two-disc rock opera about him first.

As much as I don't mind the changeover and even look forward to some things, that's a minor annoyance I plan to be minorly annoyed about in a big way.

+1
"Yay new best hitter!!!!!!!!!!Let's bat him eighth!" He's faster than Molina, and probably has more power.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 3/12
The Reds claimed LHP Jose Capellan off waivers from the Giants.
The Giants were going to send the Rule 5 pick back to Boston, but the Reds, who had already returned their Rule-5er to Atlanta, opted to step in and take a look at the left-hander. Capellan spent last season in short-season ball, finishing with a 3.69 ERA and a 71/11 K/BB ratio in 75 2/3 innings. He has a chance to be a decent reliever someday, but he's a long ways off. The Red Sox still figure to get him back.
Capellan

Even though it didn't work out, I still like the pickup. It was a low-risk (money-wise) attempt to get younger and better.
Re: Open Gameday Thread, 3/12
I agree. Which is why I think they thought it was the other Jose Capellan.

"Baseball Wizard" performed by "The How"
Ever since I was a young boy
I've played the horsehide ball;
From Piedmont down to Carmel,
I must have played them all.
But I ain't seen nothin' like him
In no amusement hall.
That short, thin, Tim guy
Sure throws a mean baseball.
He's a baseball wizard,
Dressed in orange and black.
A baseball wizard,
Got such a supple back!
How do you think he does it?
(I don't know)
What makes him so good?
Well, he ain't got no distractions,
He tunes out all the yells.
Don't see runners on base,
Must pitch by sense of smell.
Always has a loose arm,
Ices not at all;
That short, thin Tim guy
Sure throws a mean baseball.

And I hear you, Timmy. I tried to learn guitar and I just can't do it. I can play bassoon or any saxophone you put in front of me, but guitar? Forget it. Bassoon is not nearly as cool as the guitar, though. You never heard of Bassoon Hero for the Xbox.

Re: Open Gameday Thread, 3/12
But the silver linings:
. 12 first-pitch strikes to 15 batters.
. 39 strikes (66%) on 59 pitches.
. Five of the six outs were recorded on strikeouts (four) or ground outs (one).
. The curve and change seemed to be working well. (I presume Tim was leaving his fastball up in the zone, allowing it to be hit.)
Progressing or regressing?
Indeed
Indeed Tim's results this spring haven't been pretty.
But I talked to a couple of guys Friday who watched his outing and indicated Tim wasn't being hit hard, that he particularly was victimized when Aaron Rowand seemed to lose the key base-loaded double in the high sky and froze on a very catchable not overly well-struck ball.
The guys felt Tim was pitching great to a batter, then often experimenting on him with the slider once he reached two strikes. I would say the worst thing about the outing for Tim wasn't being hit hard, but not having great success with the new slider.
Tim threw a slider in college, but this one is a new one whose release more closely approximates his release on his other three pitches.
