Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5

This page shows the over/unders for the 2008 season.  According to Vegas, the bums are favored in the NL West followed by Arizona, San Diego, and Colorado.  It's all pretty close though.

The teams that are supposed to be worse than the Giants are Washington, Pittsburgh, Florida, and Baltimore.  I was surprised by Minnesota at 72.5 (79 wins - Johan/Hunter/Garza + Delmon/Liriano/random parts = 7 wins worse?) and Tampa Bay at 73.5 (their bullpen can't be as bad as last year, can it?).

As for the Giants, well, that sounds about right.  I'm going to take the over because it's still spring training and my adopted son Denker is going to slug .600 for no good reason.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
Yeah, BP predicts they'll win 89(!) thanks to improved defense and young players getting better.  That's unrealistic, but I can see them at around 80.  Poor Orioles are going to get slaughtered this year.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
I don't know if I can feel sorry for the Orioles or their fans. They're actually rebuilding. The Giants are going to lose 99 games by scores of 2-1, 3-1, 4-3, etc. etc. and I'm going to watch a lot of those games in their entiretishness. The fact that our management has no clue will make it even more painful.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
The problem with the Orioles is they're in the same division as the Yankees, Red Sox, and the soon to be very good Rays. There just isn't much hope for them in the future either, even though they're rebuilding.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
The Orioles could be in a division with Pittsburgh, Kansas City, and the Fresno Grizzlies and it wouldn't help them any until they fix the problems at the top.

The shame is that when Angelos bought that team he essentially acquired a license to print money. Remember he bought the O's and Camden Yard out of receivership (Eli Jacobs was forced to sell them off during bankrupcy procedures) paying bottom barrel prices for one of baseball's best franchises, a good talent base (they went to the playoffs in two of Angelos first 4 years as owner), and a stadium that was the jewel of baseball and sold out every night. On top of that, he owned the regional cable sports network that broadcasts their games.

Somehow, long before the Nats came to town or the Red Sox became the dominant team in baseball, Pete turned all those advantages into nothing, and now he sits atop one of the game's worst organizations, a stadium that's empty every night of the year except when the Yanks or Red Sox come to town (and then is filled with fans of the opposition) and a seriously compromised revenue base.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
Oh without a doubt, the Orioles problems lie far deeper than their division.

I was just commenting that even if all those problems were solved, it still wouldn't put them in a favorable position.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
The Giants may lose some close games like you say early on. I say they're not even competitive after June and actually look for them to be on the bad end of a lot of blow outs that are over by the 5th and 6th innings. Maybe they can win 2 games a week to finish at around .400 or 65 games.

The best the Giants have are three pitchers with potential. No stars. Just potential. They can't hold good teams close except sporadically and even then it will be on the wrong end.

When you are talking about a team where everything would have to go OMG! right (shutouts, no-hitters, 50 hrs from Rowand and Molina etc.} just to break even we're looking at total pathos and no hope. None. The end is near. Repent

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
Agreed. I take the whole "All Out" bullshit as a personal insult to my intelligence because in my 50 or so years of watching baseball I've never seen a last place club that wasn't going through the motions by the dog days. Nor have I ever seen a bad team with a happy clubhouse. I say the vets have cashed it in by Memorial Day (might as well, seeing that the front office beat them to it by five or six months).

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
Tough line. I could see this Giants team winning 72 or 73 games, but it's just as likely they win 67 or 68. This is why I never gamble on sports. Ahem.

I think 71.5 is a pretty solid over/under for the Giants, although I would take the under.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
Under for us, over for TB definitely because they've gotten so much better; very solid 1-2-3 rotation, great lineup, and mediocre bullpen.  Their only letdown might be their lack of a closer.  But I think they could finish in 2nd place in the AL East over the Yanks.  The Yanks rotation is baaaad...

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
Oh, yeah: take the "under" on the Yanks' 93.5 wins, unless they go 19-0 against Baltimore.

Maybe Jeff Niemann too.  That'd be nice.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
My personal expectations:
73+ wins = Happy (Would love to avoid 90 losses)
68-72 wins = Content (played to talent level)
67 & under = Upset (I thought we had 'Warrior Spirit'?)
So relax! Let's have some fun out here! This game's fun, OK? Fun goddamnit.

I'm going to take the over! I have a hard time convincing myself, but I haven't been on the optimism train as much as I'd like. Being a pessimist just isn't my natural state.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
Note: in this scenario the concept of "realist" does not exist. Actually, it does exist, but it exists on the half-game plane (example: 71.5 games), so I can't actually be one.

Just about Right: S.F. Giants

My gut tells me that this is the year that the Yankees lineup gets really old really fast. I trust in agent Colletti's ability to bring down the Evil Empire, but not enough to put money on it.

Anyone else feel like Washington could drop some jaws?

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
That Tampa Bay Over/Under is going steadily up.  I'm seeing it closer to 75 (with extra vig also 20+%), at most online books.  Wouldn't be surprised to see it close at around 76 -120 by the start of the season.

Giants however, holding steady at 71.50.  <sigh>

There is some value to be found on the Over, if you poke around.  It can be had for Even odds, where as most future bets will be assessed a 10-15% juice/vig/commision.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
I think that's about right, i expect us to win about the same amount of games as we did last year.

I think Tampa Bay will do better than that, how much better is difficult to say.

Re: Vegas over/under for Giants' wins: 71.5
On the one hand, last year's Giants team was unlucky. They "should" have won 78, not 71. That's huge, and ordinarily you'd expect a team to rebound. The difference between Bonds and Rowand is one or two games, not seven.

On the other hand, we seem to be playing to lose this year. It's hard to be bullish on a team whose management just doesn't bother to fill holes at two key positions, and that plans to give significant playing time to the likes of Kline and Roberts even though better options are already on the roster.

All in all, I'll take the over, but not with much confidence.
