Lincecum articles

Spring training just around the corner, Fan Fest today - and a couple of articles on the Enchanter in this morning's papers. What could be more glorious (other than having corner infielders)?

Schulman and Baggarly report that Timmy is working on a sharp slider. "I plan to be a four-pitch starter," says the lad (bless his heart).  And, says he, "it's looking like a strikeout pitch". Now, is that sweet or what?

Plus, he's psyched that the fans were so strongly against trading him.

Other encouraging notes of interest:

  • The Giants will be scouting hitters in spring training and, says Sabean: "If a position player could help us, it'll be long-term". Sure hope that rules out trading for Crede (I prefer to ignore the possibility of signing him to a Borasesque-level extension).
  • Several clubs plan to scout Noah to see if his elbow is sound. Giants say he's fine.
  • Bochy says Roberts will go into camp as the "frontrunner" in LF, but Sabean is less clear. On the one hand he says "we hope Dave comes back to form", on the other hand there's "But you're going to have to find a way to get (the younger) guys in there. I'd hate like hell to be in a position to send any one of them back to the minor leagues". Me, I'll always take the more optimistic route, so I prefer to read that as somewhat encouraging.

I was at that game. The crowd was really getting into it. There was probably a louder cheer for many of Timmy's strikeouts than Klesko's homer or Vizquel's diving stop.

    What a Crock
Brian Sabean does not "hate like hell" to send prospects back to the minors.

It's what he's paid for, and what he does.

God I love Matt Cain. And that quote really helps me imagine that Matt and Tim are BFF. Which is what I do whenever I remember that I'm less than two months away from hearing: "Batting cleanup, Bengie Molina".

That video actually got me excited about this upcoming season.
I think I'll maintain that excitement by only watching 2 out of every 5 games...
    Also exciting: sharp slider, not-Crede.

Re: I forgot to mention that
I tried to get John to make Tim Lincecum his #1 pitching prospect last winter.  I was able to help get him from #5 to #3.

One of the reasons I cited for Tim over Phil Hughes (#1) and Homer Bailey (#2) was that his arm had been healthier.  And sure enough, both players missed time due to injury last season, while Tim remained healthy for the 23rd year of his life.

Hughes and Bailey are about two years younger than Tim, however.  But while one could make an argument for Phil's still being up there with Tim, I think Tim went around Homer last season.

Right now the top competition for Tim might be Buchholtz and Yovani Gallardo.

What I want to know is, how does Tim come up with one extra pitch per winter?  :)

I think what you meant was that Matt Cain told Tim's teeth to fall in line, and they did.

I know that many of you love Timmy, and what I am about to say may be send me to hell, but I heard from a friend, who works with the San Jose Giants that Timmy is not as nice a person as he seems. My friend told me he is one of the most arrogant people he has ever met. He also said that Matt Cain was the complete opposite of Tim.

Take it for what it is worth.

He can be as arrogant as he wants as long as he becomes as good a pitcher as we and the projection systems expect him to be.

    Re: Lincecum articles
Yeah, my favorite player of all time is Barry Bonds, and it's not even close, so I don't think arrogant would really bother me.

Now, there's certain levels of being a dick that might bother me (like the Schillings and Clemenses of the baseball world - which you can see would be an extreme level of dickism), but I'll deal with that when and if I see it.

Also known for their arrogance: Babe Ruth, Ted Williams, Rickey Henderson and Reggie Jackson, all fan favorites. As long as he's good, and unless he starts stabbing people like Cobb, I don't think I'd really mind.

    Re: Lincecum articles
Timmah's impatience may have been interpreted as arrogance. The summer after his final season in college he did the following:
"Tim Lincecum made his professional debut on July 26, 2006 with the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (the Giants' Class A Short Season affiliate) against the Vancouver Canadians, pitching one inning and striking out all three batters he faced. After his second outing on July 31 against the Boise Hawks, in which he pitched three innings, striking out seven and allowing just one base runner, he was promoted to the High Class-A San Jose Giants.

On August 5, in his first start in San Jose against the Bakersfield Blaze, he pitched 2⅔ innings, allowing three runs (two earned), and striking out five. Lincecum finished the year 2-0 with a 1.95 ERA, 48 strikeouts, and 12 walks in 27⅔ innings pitched. He also got the victory in the opening game of the California League playoffs, giving up one run on five hits in seven innings, striking out ten and walking one against the Visalia Oaks. However, Visalia would wind up winning the series 3-2."

The 2007 season started this way:

"Going into 2007, Lincecum was ranked as the #11 prospect in baseball and the #1 prospect on the San Francisco Giants by Baseball America.  He spent the first month of the season pitching for the Fresno Grizzlies, the Giants' AAA affiliate. In five starts (31 innings), he allowed just 1 run, 12 hits, 11 walks, while striking out 46 and going 4-0.  During his 2006 and 2007 minor league campaigns, Lincecum struck out the highest percentage of batters (minimum 100) of any minor league pitcher in the last 10 years: 30.9 percent.

Colorado Rockies prospect Ian Stewart called Lincecum "the toughest pitcher [he] ever faced," adding "Guys on our club who have been in the big leagues said he's the toughest guy they ever faced too ... I'm not really sure why he's down here, but for a guy who was drafted last year ... that guy is filthy."

Arrogance, confidence, I've seen that comment before about Will Clark.  As someone else noted, Tim has not seemed that way in the interviews I have seen/heard.  Perhaps someone insulted Tim just before the friend saw him, I notice that his words get more pointed when he is questioned about his height/durability.

And would you blame him if he was annoyed at questions about his height and durability? He probably gets those questions all the time. These guys are human after all. Until he punts a camera I'll consider his reactions fair.

    Re: Lincecum articles
I really don't believe that Lincecum is arrogant. He has never come across that way in interviews, and you can usually tell when someone is. If the reporters covering the Giants made it clear that guys like Bonds and AJ were dicks, why would they protect Lincecum?? As for the video, I can see why Tony Clark wanted to play for the Giants!! It looked like he was 8 of the 10 strikeouts. It looked like a man against a boy, but Timmy was the man!!

Maybe it's the legal background, but I had a dream last night where Sabean was telling Bochy "I am directly ordering you to play Frandsen at least 2 days out of three, either at 2b or 3b and if you disobey this direct order you will be fired without out having to pay your full contract."  I was kind of happy when I woke up.
