XM...(Chavez???)

Not to sound like an advertisement...

Star-divide

but XM has had a good amount of solid information lately about the Giants...even the youngsters.  It has a 90 second news brief every 20 minutes or so and on one of them they use it to ask random MLB guys Bio-type questions..they've been doing all kinds of players...but today I heard one from of all people..Kevin Frandsen.  Likes Jack Johnson. Favorite Road Meal? Togo's.   etc., etc.  Then yesterday morning I heard Buck Martinez talking about how the A's were still blowing up the team, and he had heard things about them moving Chavez to the Giants, after he proves that he is still healthy in Spring Training, which is more exciting than the Crede rumors I've been hearing.  Then tonight they had their Late Night guy, (cant remember his name off-hand) interviewing Brian Sabean (didn't hear), Matt Cain (caught the end of, very nice to hear from him), and the beginning of a interview with Timmeh....makes me glad all over again that I have it.

Anyhow....What do you guys think of taking a flier on Chavez??  What do you think we should/will give up for someone like that??

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
I don't like the idea of dealing with Billy Beane.

ZiPS has Chavez putting up .259/.341/.453. His contract goes 08:$11M, 09:$11M, 10:$12M,
11:$12.5M club option ($3M buyout). Of course, if he's healthy and starts hitting over .270 and slugging over .500, he's well worth it. If that A's will eat Roberts, it'd be worth it. I just don't see that happening.
I see this happening: Giants give up Sanchez, Correia and a prospect, and Chavez hits .240 in 75 games. Yay.

Chavez will require young players, of which we really don't have a surplus.

Injured, under achiever, expensive. Things are bad for us, let's not make them worse.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
I actually think Chavez would come relatively cheap. A poster above mentioned his salary and, based on his recent injuries and power decline, that contract may be a reason we have to give up less than one would think. I would be surprised if a package of Fred Lewis and a misch/cowart type couldnt get it done. maybe im crazy.

the question is: would his lack of genuine lefty power combined with the phone booth be enough to diminish the value his OPB and fielding provide? I do think if we are going the "pitching and defense route" a player like chavez may backdoor some stathead offensive statistics on Sabean.

I nominate Common Sense as the new GM of the San Francisco Giants.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
I think you're right.  You can't argue that a player is worth one or two top flight prospects when that player is only occasionally not injured.  Especially when he's making 16 mil per year.  I think we should go for him over Crede, even though it looks like we've already arranged a deal for Crede.  Chavez, if he can stay healthy, has both a better bat and a better glove than Crede.  And with his price and injury problems, they can't hope to recieve much more than just a couple decent players.  I think we could do it with a Pat Misch/Sergio Romo package or something like that.  They could use some more pitching prospects...

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
If there's a trade already arranged for Crede, Sabean is lying to us because he is clearly stating he doesn't want a player who will be gone in one year. Unless of course he has a trade arranged and a new long term deal for Crede already negotiated, which would further reinforce the opinion that he is stupid. I really don't think there's truly a trade arranged for him anyway, because it wouldn't make sense for either side. If Crede shows up in spring training hitting homers by the bushel, I doubt the White Sox want to be locked into dealing him for an already determined player which was based on him having dubious health. From the Giants' point of view, they want to see more than just his back being healthy to justify giving up players who might be with the White Sox long after Crede is gone from SF. I would think this trade in place thing is just an agreement of mutual interest and a desire to talk further as spring training progresses.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
you would certainly think so. If Sabean is smart he will play Chicago and Oakland against each other, since both are trying to dump these players. Whoever takes less for their third basemen has a deal. I also don't buy the "be afraid of Billy Beane" philosophy, especially when he has built a team that will probably be losing 100 games or so the next couple of seasons. Genius, my ass.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
The Pivot point on the whole thing with injured 3 baggers that the team is keeping an eye on is apparently Ray Durham.  I've seen several sources that the Giants are actually fairly secure that Frandsen will hit, but there's alot of worry that RayRay is done. The current best case is that Durham can still hit .260 and make himself quasi useful and that Frandsen will get 500 abs playing alot of 3B and giving Ray and Omar days off, but if Durham is finished, they plan to shift Frandsen back and they will need to plug the 3B hole with someone.  The only contingency they have if Durham goes down is Aurilia and/or Leone.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
Unless Chavez is healthy, he won't be much better than Leone.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
I concur, and I would say the same about Crede.  I admit to being curious as to how Leone looks this spring. He was the annointed hier at 3B in Seattle but had injury issues in his rookie debut and then got blocked when Seattle signed Beltre, and hasn't found a path back to the majors in the intervening 3 years.  He waits for his pitch and then swings out of his shoes and either strikes out or gets some serious wood on the ball or doesn't see his pitch and walks. Very few double plays.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
Chavvy is making a lot of money, has injury concerns and has performed very poorly the last two seasons.  This means he will come cheaply in either talent or money.  I would choose saving on talent and paying the guy's salary if I were the Giants.

The upsides to getting him would be 1) he's one of the best defensive 3rd basemen in the game 2) he would provide homerun power (something the Giants are definately lacking, if you weren't aware) 3)he walks more than anybody the Giants have now 4)if he turns out to be healthy he could be a nice surprise 5)Lou Seal is our starting 3rd baseman at the moment.

Only 972 games until the end of Zito's contract.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
I'd be down for some Chavez, even if it costs us a second-tier arm.  The main thing we need, more than power or OBP, is more good players.  Rowand's our only truly above-average player on the offensive side.  At this point in his career, it's not a sure bet that Chavez is a good player, but it's a lot more likely than Crede being one (or Ensberg or McPherson, for that matter).

He costs some money, but we have money... we'd be well below our spending limit even if we added him.  He's only 29, we'd have him for three or four years, and he certainly wouldn't be blocking anyone.

Eric Chavez wouldn't make this a dramatically better team, but he'd fill a hole, and he'd give us some sorely needed upside.  Of all the 3B scenarios bandied about, this is the one I like best.  We have the money to take risks like this.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
Agree on all counts, but the key is that the A's will just need to give him to the Giants for, I don't know, Vinnie Chulk. If Chavez costs more than Hennessey, then forget it.

I bet Sabean would trade Lowry and Sanchez for Chavez if he had the chance, so I'm pretty wary of any rumors.

Re: XM...(Chavez???)
Yep, with you on that... no way to feel comfortable about Beane getting a crack at any of our commodities.  Sabean would have a lot of leverage if he was willing to take on Chavez's contract, but I doubt he'd realize that.

Still, if Sabes is gonna punt away young talent for an iffy 3B, this is the iffy 3B I hope he chooses.

for fun lets say a deal was in the works
what do giants have that A's want?

exclude villalona/07 draft class

A's have infield needs
and beane always w ants pitching

doubt they have interest in lowry
hennessey/correia? A's bullpen is full and they are more short term pieces, then long term

a more interesting scenario, A's might trade blanton to reds for cueto or bailey/votto+
that would leave A's with barton/votto/johnson at 1b, sabes would be smat to pry one of them away

An interesting proposition; if only Sabes really were "smat" enough to think like that...
