Chulk Signs

I can't imagine anyone caring that much about this, but Vinnie Chulk signed for 1yr @ $837,500. It's about half way between what the Giants offered and he wanted in arbitration. I'm surprised the Giants didn't just go to arbitration. It seemed like they would have won, what with the finger sickness and suckitude.

Re: Chulk Signs
I wouldn't want to go to an arbitrator. Matt Wise got 1.2 mil.

I suppose that's preferable to...
CHULK SMASH PUNY ARBITER
Bochy: grounded until he stops hitting and running with slow runners and crappy hitters

World War Chulk
Can't we just skip to the part when we send him into outer space?
Democracy is lovely but baseball is more mature. BVCE supports Manny Burriss and SF Dugout.

I like him better than Messenger, for what that's worth.
Matt Cain, cleanup hitter or starting pitcher?

Re: Chulk Signs
I guess that's reasonable for a guy likely to be DFA'd by the All Star break.

Re: Chulk Signs
Chulk's not a world beater or anything, but you could do a hell of a lot worse than a 3.57 ERA/124 ERA+, 1.26 WHIP, and 41:14 K/BB ratio in the soft middle part of the bullpen. Those are pretty solid numbers. I know he's blown a few games (everyone in a bullpen has, it's the nature of the game), but I don't really get where the overwhelming sentiment that he sucks is coming from.

Re: Chulk Signs
Agree.

The commitment is small, sub 1-million-dollars, and if he explodes this year, we can just cut him loose. I actually like his stats better than Hennessey who's earning almost twice as much because of OMG SAVES.

I'm not really anti-Chulk either
As long as you keep him the hell away from Scott Hairston.

I concur
I actually like Chulk. I think the main reason he gets a bad rap around here is that he was part of the Hillenbrand trade.

Re: Chulk Signs
Vinnie's all right by me. Good for him.

I even like Messenger somewhat (gasp). If he wouldn't try to blow things by people all of time, he might do a little better.

Well, all except for the "jacked up" cap part :-)

My adopted son Matt Downs. Because face it, everybody else was already taken by the time I got here.

Re: Chulk Signs
I'm kinda bummed that Klesko isn't back this year cause we could have a bitchin bro-off between Klesko, Rowand, Messenger and Frandsen.
Pedro Feliz: Marginally better this year.

Re: Chulk Signs
Randy Messenger will be back in everybody's good graces after an offseason of rest for his broken hand. Randy will wind up being an important part of the Giant bullpen. Chulk will be mopping up.

Re: Chulk Signs
I disagree. Messenger had about half a season's worth of good baseball in his career, and even that was suspect because of his large WHIP and tall BAA (1.52 and .303 respectively with Florida in 2007 - both of which were much better than his #s in SF). He's an emotional cannon, not very smart, and has what is described as strikeout stuff except that it doesn't manage strike many people out.

Chulk, as argued above, has been pretty darn good and surprisingly consistent since we traded for him, and if his hand is recovered, I would expect him to be playing in meaningful games until the team stops playing meaningful games. On the other hand, I'd almost be a little surprised if Messenger is still on the ML roster at the end of '08.

Re: Chulk Signs
Chulk as turned into one of those guilty pleasure types for me. I kept thinking  he would be gone in 60 days.  He was part of a brutal trade. It created a large  "Blah" for me. Then around July I released this guy is like a cockroach. He just keeps on surviving. Sure he is  no world beater nor are his efforts that glorious  but its kind of like Chad Zerbe story but from a different direction.

As for Flat Hat  the jury is out  on him.  After all how can I get that mad at a guy being so frustrated with the `07 season that he attacks a water cooler? It not something I want to see that often but , to steal from Mr. Rock, " I can understand".
