Re: Uhh, Hijack?
Hey, let's talk classic Nintendo PLATFORMERS and I'll nerd the crap out of you! Platformers were all we had in my house when I was young, and I was dangerously loyal to Nintendo. And then I missed the SNES because we were poor/cheap. We call those the dark years. Only slightly darker than the semi-dark years, though, which came when I hit the "I want girls" phase and came under the mistaken assumption that serious gaming was counterproductive to that. I later realized it was my awkward and asocial nature that was actually counterproductive and got back into gaming. Not surprisingly, it was only after then that I started getting girls (well, two of them anyway - not at the same time pervs) and the one that stuck also games!

Which just goes to prove it: Hardcore gaming gets you dates.

Re: Uhh, Hijack?
See, what's funny is, I love the Dodgers. (I'm locking my door after I post this.)

I love my enemy as though it were my friend. I have come to realize that I only hold any shred of respect for one other team in the NL West, and that's the team I love to hate.

I even root for them when we're out of it, hoping they'll get all the way to the World Series and lose in four games. Then, Giants fans would be pissed that they got there in the first place, but would also have some vindication in knowing they were swept.

And I still crave a Dodgers-Giants NLCS because the crowds would be AMAZINGLY INTENSE. But that won't happen as long as they're both trading spots between 4th and 5th in the standings. (You watch, Giants will have at least six more wins. Maybe even ten. Maybe.)

In the end it's all a diabolical scheme to provide fire under the asses of Giants management and Bay Area sports writers. It'll work, see. Nyah, see, nyah.

But yeah, I've never been to Berkeley.

Re: Uhh, Hijack?
Super Hydlide, for the Genesis. Don't know why, but I played the crap out of that game at my friend's house. I never even owned a Genesis. Do you know how hard it is to play an RPG on a system you don't own?

Game that I owned: Final Fantasy III for SNES. I has a chainsaw.

My roommate in college was obsessed with chocobo breeding. He got better.

But I'm not really an RPG guy; I'm a Nintendo franchise fanboy. Mario/Zelda/Metroid usually adds up to a worthy game each year, and that's all I have time for.

Re: Uhh, Hijack?
See, I grew up a total Nintendo fanboy (which sucked because I never had an SNES, but was cool because Nintendo is the shtitz), and it's only recently that I've started getting into the RPG genre (although perhaps I should include Pokemon).

In March the Wii is getting its first real RPG (Baroque, an Atlus title also coming out on PS2) and I'm WTFBBQing over it. Nintendo System + RPG = WTFBBQ for me right now.

I'm also on the last stage of Paper Mario and the Thousand Year Door for Gamecube (backward compatability ftw), which is an RPG style game though I have a hard time calling it a real RPG.

And even though it'll be a PS3 title and I don't have one of those, I'm already geeked out about FFXIII. I'm really starting to "get" this whole FF thing. I'm not finishing FFIII until I stop playing Pokemon, though. Which is tough because, technically, you never stop playing Pokemon....

And in about a month I'm going to break down and buy Etrian Odyssey for the DS for like $60 bucks from an Amazon seller, because that game looks cool.

I'd love to play more classic/old school RPGs. RPGs are fun. Why didn't I realize this sooner?!!??!

Re: Uhh, Hijack?
We used to invent codes in Game Genie to see what they'd do. It worked best in Mario 3, where you could practically plug in a random code and have something visible change in the game.

There was a code we put in once that made Mario look like his hands were glued together in front of him. This perception was supported by the fact that he also couldn't climb vines. That was a lame code.

There was another code that would turn Mario gray. He couldn't use items, but he was permanently invincible anyway so it worked out fine. Or it would have, except he couldn't use pipes. So we could only play like the first 3 levels.

Come to think of it, I don't think that any code we made up actually had a positive effect....

On that same note, I still remember the Game Genie code for Infinite Lives in Mario 3. It was SXIOPO. Note the power of repetitive action. Over ten years since the last time I used that code and it's still in the easily accessible part of my brain.

On computers,
Ultima 4. No computer RPG has come close.

For fun and addictive hack-n-slash, the the Might and Magic series, 1-9, also, the Bard's Tale series, 1-3, and the Eye of Beholder series, 1-3.

Not exactly classic, but Neverwinter Nights is also great, because the toolset has resulted in a HUGE amount of user created content.

That video is hilarious! Oh my god.

As for video games I played a lot of Final Fantasy III. I had a Setzer/Celes thing going on. I never owned the game or the system, so I played it at my boyfriend's all the time.

Hmm, I wonder if I can get that for the Wii. I heard it was actually FF7 thhough? Wouldn't want to buy the wrong one.

Re: Mock the 1986 Dodgers Here
No, no, no, no, no. FFVI (also known as FFIII) is available on GBA, which you can play on your DS.

FFIII (also known as Not Previously Available in America) is available on the DS with slick 3D graphics.

The two are different games. The DS one is actually FFIII, like the real chronological Japanese release FFIII. Unless every single review I read of the thing is wrong.

Re: Mock the 1986 Dodgers Here
Up until Final Fantasy VII, the Japanese editions were numbered differently than the American ones.  Why?  Because half of the first six titles never made it to America initially.  To avoid confusing us Americans, the American releases were numbered sequentially and separately.  So the game known as FF6 in Japan was initially released as FF3 in America.

Squaresoft got wise with Final Fantasy VII, and released it with the same name all over the world.  Since then, they have published all the FF games with the original games in America.  But still, to some people, 6 = 3.
