Baseball neophyte here

This is my first year of following baseball seriously, and I have a question for those of you who've been doing it longer.

About what level of competition to players face in college? When looking at a college player's numbers, what's a good comp? low A? high A? AA?

Re: Baseball neophyte here
Just going by the assignments following the draft, the top draft picks end up in Salem-Keizer, the Giants' short season rookie league team. It's a more advanced team than the rookie league team in Arizona. Most of the high round college guys go to SK, while the high round HS guys go to the AZL.

Probably oversimplfying it, but it's a good start.

Clarify, dummy
And by all that I'd say the competition level of college ball is comparable to rookie ball.

Re: Clarify, dummy
Since most college players don't get drafted, the level of play at Salem-Keizer has got to be higher than in college. Probably a lot higher. Arizona might be comparable. Of course, there are many different levels of college play.

Re: Baseball neophyte here
don't forget the difference in the bats.  Kind of a big difference there.

Re: Baseball neophyte here
Point. It's such a ridiculous thing that college programs use aluminum bats and pro ball uses wood bats. I guess my brain tries to block it out.

Re: Baseball neophyte here
Great year to start getting into baseball and the Giants seriously. This team is going to be an offensive juggernaut.

Re: Baseball neophyte here
I look at it this way: The Giants are going to be terribad this year, but they've got some promising talent in the low minors, so I might as well follow them.

Re: Baseball neophyte here
What does it say when you read the words "offensive juggernaut" on a SF Giants blog, and you nearly fall over backwards in your seat at work?  Ho hum...

"Offensive juggernaut" - great response.

Go Fred Lewis... You're better than the alternative... Yippee...

Depends ...
on what you mean by competition. The level of talent is higher in the minor leagues, however I believe the level of competition is higher in a lot of college leagues because there is more of a focus on pride and team. Personelle wise ... in college, a team knows where it will over the course of a season. In the minors, a good team will have many of its players promoted, so it shifts the competitive focus.

Re: Baseball neophyte here
welcome to the insane world of following baseball on the net

have to say, the internets totally changed my appreciation of the game

when i was a kid, and all there was, was tv radio and the papers, i never really knew any players outside of the starting lineup

now i get to follow the players from their days in hs

the coolest thing is that i know more about the minor leaguers than the guys in the boot do

(and there are times when im sure i know more about the minors than our wonderful management does)

Re: Baseball neophyte here
Remember: All the greatest pitching in the world will not win you a game if you put an impotent line-up on the field for run support (SEE: Cain and Lincecum lose 20-games).  I know it's so obvious I mention this simple fact because Giants Management is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO unknowing and you'll never get it from them. They're so stupid they think it's their dirty, little secret and we're only here to attend the non-game for the beautiful ballpark and won't notice. If you're a baseball fan in the Bay Area you must feel terribly abandoned and alone.  All I can suggest is that you root for the visiting team, unless it's the Dodgers. Why waste your time studying the statistics of players who aren't going to get to play anyway?  Ask the prospects in Cincinnati how they like playing for ex-Giants, ex-Cubs manager,Dusty Baker. Giants Management knew Dusty's tendencies when they hired him.  The same holds true for Bruce Bochy and his monkies: 1) See No Position Talent; 2) Draft No Position Talent; 3) Develop No Talent Except Pitching--Which Is To Be Traded For...4) BAND-AID POSITION TALENT.  Why waste your time unless you want to follow some other team and lead the raiding-party?

Re: Baseball neophyte here
OMG, Brian get your trade-pencil out! Augusta Greenjackets were filthy with nasty pitchers who only throw lights-out stuff last year.  Can't you hide them better at a lower-level until we can move them?  The Cardinals will give us Juan Long-Gone for them and we can sign him to a long-term contract.  Just a scary thought?
