Dodger Stadium

Hello everybody. My travels on the taxpayer dollar will be taking me to San Diego in the near future, and I may have an opportunity to catch the Giants on opening weekend in LA. I've never been to the stadium, and was hoping for advice. I guess I mostly just don't want to get shot. Anybody been?

Actually, I think the last shooting was in SF, and it was a Giants fan murdering a Dodger fan.

Re: Dodger Stadium
I was at that game as well, with a bunch of friends.  Lower box, left field side, row 5 I think.  We rooted for the Giants, traded chants with the Dodger fans around us, and the Dodger fans around us asked us to come back again because we made the game more fun.  Ah, the joy of responding to "Barry Sucks" chants with "Who sucks now?" every time Bonds did something right (or a Dodger did something wrong). =)

Also, the #@!#* Dogs are pretty good, although I'd rather have garlic fries and a Sheboygan brat any old day.

Re: Dodger Stadium
First off, how good are you with shape charges?  Can you set a detonator correctly?  If so, than while you're in Smurf Park, I got a couple of suggestions.

All seriousness aside, If you go for the entire nine innings, you'll have the park to yourself pretty much for the 1st oouple of innings, and every inning after the 6th.  The $)(#*$% dogs are pretty good at least.

Now about those shape charges...

Re: Dodger Stadium
It has been transformed into a pastel nightmare.  It is absolutely one of the ugliest color configurations I've ever seen.

the RF pavilion is a bad idea, as are all the bleachers.  View Reserved is probably the most family-friendly and therefore Giants friendly section and provides a decent enough view of the game.

Parking just generally sucks.  sorry.  If you arrive on time and leave at the appropriate time you won't hit the bulk of traffic.  Dodgers fans really are some of the worst.

Food-wise, It's a decent park.  Nothing too thrilling; the dodger dogs are overrated.

In all, remember to come prepared with thick skin if you're going to root for the Giants alone.

good luck, though!

Re: Dodger Stadium
Don't sit in the bleachers unless you have an intimidating look. I also wouldn't wear too much giant gear unless you're with a big crowd.

Btw, anyone go to any of the Dodger games in LA when Barry was close to breaking the record? Every time Barry came to plate, holy crap it was amazing. That was one of the best scenes I've ever witnessed. When that place is packed with 56,000 fans, with the cameras flashing at every level, everyone screaming...it's definitely something.

I love LA
Bring your SF gear, root for the Giants, act civil and no problem at all. Since it will be your first time to Dodger Stadium get there early, watch some BP and acquaint yourself. With early arrival you could park close to lot K which will give you the quickest/shortest exit from stadium to freeway. The Giants will be on the first base side - so you might want to purchase a ticket in the even number aisles.

If you prefer to eat at the stadium bring lots of money. Recommend Gordon Biersch behind home plate on the field level. The chicken sausage and garlic fries and excellent.

Water and bridge toll. Those jerks.

At least with the water, on its way down there it's carried by and above ground, open air system, so there's lots of opportunities for bird poo and vagrant urination. The toll money, though, that gets there clean.

At this point I'd like to say I really hope I'm right about this toll thing. I heard it x years ago, forgot my source, and have never been contradicted when I say it. Therefore, I assume I'm right.

Re: Dodger Stadium
I go to a couple of games at Dodger Stadium every year with my family, including the game where the fan was shot.  That was the rowdiest game we have ever seen there.  We wear our Giants gear, but don't engage in any taunting of Dodger fans.  We get some taunts, mostly "Giants suck", stuff like that.  Make sure you get there early.  If you try to cut it too close, you'll never make the game on time due to traffic.  If you are lucky, you can get out of the parking lot within 30 min, but be prepared for over 1 hour.  There's a good chance that when you get out of the parking lot, it will be on a different side of the park from whence you came, so study a map ahead of time.

It will be interesting to see what the Dodger fans do now that they don't have Barry to kick around anymore.  I don't think they know  any other chants/yells/cheers except "Barry sucks."

Addendum
Personally, I would never dare to sit in the pavilions.  They get pretty violent out there.  The fan who was shot was sitting out in the LF pavilion and an argument got taken out to the parking lot.

I always used to like the blue deck straight above home plate. They're high up there, but you actually feel quite close to the action, it's a great view of everything, and it's fairly cheap.

Re: Dodger Stadium
Buy your tickets ahead of time and you'll save a couple bucks.

If you are carless, the #2 bus drops you off right at the foot of the hill below Chavez Ravine.  #2 goes the length of Sunset Blvd throughout the city.

If you are driving, try to approach the stadium from the Sunset Blvd. entrance.  Much less traffic, and much easier to get out once the game is over.  Stay to the left as you approach the gates where you pay for parking.  Once you pass through, park in the very first lot on the left - before you get to the vast expanse of parking that surrounds the stadium.  Try to park near the "aisle" so you can get out quickly.

I heartily second wilriv's recommendation of Gordon Biersch - for me, garlic fries and a Hefeweisen are mandatory.

Wear your Giants gear - I've only had good-natured taunting, nothing bad.

Re: Dodger Stadium
Yeah, I don't really go anywhere without at least my Giants hat. That hat has like 700 hours of flight time on Navy birds. And it's been to Europe. And the Caribbean. And the parks in Philly, Seattle, Baltimore and DC. I just have to take it easy on the booze so I don't get myself in trouble... I have a tendency to yell at Dodger fans all over the country. Actually, I yelled at someone in an LA hat in Belgium, but I don't think they had any idea what I was talking about. I think they were one of those people who bought a hat because they were in Los Angeles.

Re: Dodger Stadium
Prepare yourself for the $10 beer.  The dogs are really good.

Most of the rowdiest fans can't afford internet acess so they probably don't have opening day tickets and thus, sitting anywhere is probably ok.  On normal days, just avoiding the bleachers will keep your family out of harm's way.

The sound system there is pretty dated so if you want optimum hearing, sit closer to home or closer to center field.  down the lines, you tend to have trouble catching everything.

And if you want a good bar to go to before the game, hit up The Shortstop.  It's on Sunset and has $1 beers before gametime.  It's a hole in the wall place but it's walking distance (albeit a sturdy walk up a hill).  And if you somehow manage to grab a parking spot near there, it's a pretty quick shot back to the 101 from there.

They've got new people doing their pre-game ceremonies now so if that's your thing, you'll definitely wanna get there in time, they are awfully good at what they do now.

If you're with drunk friends, go ahead and start Beat LA chants, you won't get hurt.

Re: Dodger Stadium
I went to quite a few games back in the early 90s when I lived in LA and my roomie scored lots of tickets via his job at the Bel Air Country Club. It seemed like every team that came through town had plenty of fans in the stands, given that there are so many transplants in the LA area. With that being the norm (I don't know if that's still the case; I can't imagine why it would change--it's still a city of transplants...in the geographic sense) I never got the impression that visiting team fans, Giants or otherwise, took any major heat from the homers. There are just so many of them it ain't worth fighting; kind of like going to a 49ers game these last few bleak years: half the stadium is visiting team fans, so it's a waste of energy getting all worked up about it/them.

Re: Dodger Stadium
I've been to almost every Giant game in LA since 1986.

They started a new deal last year with the parking, now you must exit after the game at the same place you enter the stadium.

Make sure you know which fwy you need to leave beforehand, otherwise you could get trapped in hell after the game.

For the most part the new system worked ok, you seem to get out a little faster after the game.

One downside though, you could get stuck parking several miles from your seats, so it's best to check a map for best entrance/exit depending where your seats are located.

Since the Giant fan got shot a few years ago, the Dodgers now make announcements about Fan conduct before the games. The problem with that, is that Dodger fans don't tend to arrive before the game, so not too many of them actually hear the announcement.

In the old days it was all fun, you could wear your Giants stuff all the time, and maybe people would talk a little smack, thats all. Since the New ownership has taken over, Chavez Latrine, has really turned into a toilet.

It's hit or miss, but as a Giants Fan, there have  definitely been times when I have felt unsafe at Dodger Stadium.

Sometimes you'll get a little verbal abuse,  sometimes you'll get a lot of verbal abuse, sometimes people will throw food at you, sometimes, people will try to get really violent.

I'm not the kind of person who talks smack, I just try to enjoy the game. I find that if I'm with a bunch of friends, I can wear my Giants stuff, and the hassles are less.

Not all Dodger fans are violent and rude, some will  even come to your aid if things get really crazy, but then again, some will shoot you.

If I'm by myself, or even just with one bro, It's a lot more enjoyable to watch the game without the constant   heckling and the fear of getting to my car alive, so I try to wear something like a plain black t shirt.

(I'm making my point that I'm not in Dodger blue, but I'm not standing out to the point they can abuse me.)

Re: Dodger Stadium
I agree with the safety in numbers idea. You'll probably be OK on your own, but if you want to be a full on, openly cheering Giants fan (the only way to go), its definitely most enjoyable in a large group.

I was there back in 2002 with a group of four, all in Giants gear. We got some verbal abuse (mostly harmless) on the way to our seats and after we sat down, but soon after that, we were joined by other groups of wayward Giants fans. Eventually, there were about 20 of us, the drunk heckling subsided, and we had a great time.

Of course, it didn't hurt that the Giants were up 10-0 (12-0 final score) by the 4th inning. By the 9th, it was almost surreal to see the stadium mostly empty except for the pockets of loud Giants fans.

Now, things may have changed since then. This was before all of the hostile, "Barry sucks", anti-Giants vibes took over, so looking back, I don't know if I would do the same thing today. I wouldn't dare try any of this in the outfield pavilion, which I hear is a no man's land.

Re: Dodger Stadium
A few helpful tips for your visit to Dodger stadium

1. Take a Dodger fans advice and head here
http://www.chavezlatrine.com/
for gear. Proudly wear your Chavez Latrine tee with pride.

  1. If you are a Lesbian I would advise leaving your "life partner" alone. Any affection what so ever will be cause for your dismissal from the premises.
  2. Make sure that you stay away from the ballpark till at least the third inning. You will be recognized as a Giants fan immediately for entering the stadium on time.
  3. I would also advise leaving by the 7th. The parking lot employee's are usually locking the gate by then as part of their parole they have to be home by 10
Just stick to these helpful little tidbits of information and everything should be just fine

Re: Dodger Stadium
I've been to a handful of games at Dodger Stadium.  It's a nice place, especially considering when it was built.

The best seats IMO are their loge level between the bases.  It's like the club level at the phone booth, except it's actually lower and closer to the field than that.

I was sitting first row there 1/3 of the way between home and third when Brian Johnson threw out two runners in one inning, including Raul Mondesi when I swear Mondesi was just a step and a dive away from the bag when Johnson released the ball.

I've never been hassled for being a Giants fan there.  I don't think I'm obnoxious about it though.

Other great Dodger Stadium memory:  Atlee Hammaker leading the Giants to a 3-1 victory over Valenzuela at the height of Fernandomania.  Thanks to that game, I would never turn on Atlee.
