Bowker taking grounders at 1B

From the San Francisco Chronicle today:

John Bowker, an outfielder from Sacramento who hit 22 homers with 90 RBIs for the Giants' Double-A team last year, is taking groundballs at first base.

I like it.

Bowker's from Sacto?

Step aside, Ort.

Feliz gone, team still bad

And thus ends the Ortmeier experiment.

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
sounds promising. In any event, he won't break through as an outfielder this season as there are just too many guys ahead of him. Same as Ort. If he was just an OF, he wouldn't be on the big club.

I'd like to see Nate taking gb's at 1b as well, but I guess the Giants don't think he can play there.

Bonds stands alone.

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
Sweet. So we have a legit prospect at 1B in Fresno next year? Would love to see him get some time the last month+, after we have an idea what Ort can do. Hope he tears is up at Fresno!

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
He's worked out at first base for a while now, just he's never played it competitively that I've seen.

It's smart for him.  But I think he'll be competing for playing time at Triple-A with Travis Ishikawa.

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
I agree he will be, Brute. And I think it'll be no competition in short order. This makes me feel much better about ignoring Nick Johnson and going with Ortmeier in 2008, and Bowker in 2009.

Let's hear it for the Sacramento boy! Woo hoo!

Re: Bowker Vs. Travis
So then what is he going to do with the other 28 minutes tell the pizza arrives?

Now that I have mouthed off Travis will blow up Fresno and be pounding the MLB pitching by Independence Day. Murphy likes to play those kind of jokes on me.

Re: Bowker Vs. Travis
I sure hope so! It would be nice to be able to come out of the Ishikloset. He's just been so bad recently... come on Travis, we still love you....

I still do, anyway.

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
Do you really expect Ishikawa to play in Fresno, especially after the way he regressed this year?  It'd surprise me to see him up there to begin the season, unless he surprises us in the Spring (fingers crossed).

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
Fresno is really the only choice.  I do see the Giants exposing him to Dodd Stadium again and San Jose would be a total waste.

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
Ishikawa was completely overmatched last year in AA.  I think it'd be wiser to let him get back on track first before exposing him to higher competition.

Once he gets on a hot streak, then be aggressive with him.  I'd rather let him get on his feet first.

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
My problem with Ishikawa is that while he still has power, he has a serious problem with making contact. This year in A+ ball, as a 23-year-old, he struck out 35.1% of the time. That doesn't bode well for his future.

Yeah, he hit for power but he was repeating the league and it's the freakin' Cal league anways, it's known as a hitters league.

Good thing. I was ready to pounce if you didn't mention it.

Re: Bowker taking grounders at 1B
I've been yelling all offseason (as have others) about one of the young outfielders grabbing a first base mitt and challenging Ortmeier, because it's the easiest route to making the team and becoming a starter on Opening Day. I wanted it to be Lewis or Nate, because I wanted them to win the job in spring training, but the Giants are obviously committed to Ort to start 2008 so someone who is going to start the year at Fresno like Bowker is probably a better choice. That being said, if the Nats want to hand us Nick Johnson I would still take him.

John Boy Bowker
Hope Bowker builds on his great AA season. Adding versatility to his game may quicken his arrival to The City. Why is Ishikawa still on the 40-man roster?

Re: Placeholder or poss. trade filler?
It's the saddest thing in baseball. A placeholder in search of the elusive field goal kicker.
