Bonds intent on playing this year

I was reading an article today about Bonds still hunting for a home. It featured the usual rhetoric from his agent about how his legs feel better than ever and that he was an all-star last year and how it's unfathomable that a contending team wouldn't want him.

The simple fact of the matter is, a contending team isn't going to take him at his asking price. Only a team that is terrible and hungry to sell tickets (Oakland) would give him a sizeable contract and I can't imagine that. Or possibly a team like Anaheim could DH him if he dropped his asking price significantly (although from recent reports it sounds like Vlad will be DHing a bit this year.)

So what I'm getting at is... would we want him this year? First, I know this isn't going to happen. I know, I know, I know. The number of bridges that have been burned by both sides is too much to overcome. But it's interesting. I know the slogan this year is "A New Beginning: We're crappy but likeable". It's kind of like when the Blazers cut ties with their thugs and were awful for a few seasons.

But, if Bonds is out there in late March, seemingly healthy, and willing to settle for a 1-year $8 million dollar deal, would it be worth one more wild ride? I mean, as much as the youth movement has been talked about, Sabean seems hell-bent on an Opening Day outfield of Roberts, Rowand and Winn... not a youngster to be seen. Bonds' defense wouldn't kill us with Rowand being able to shade toward leftfield and, with all the days he needs off, Davis/Lewis would still get as much action as they are likely to see anyway.

Again, the last thing this team needs is ANOTHER outfielder but, barring injury, it would be an almost foregone conclusion that Bonds would be our top home run hitter this season. And, with luck maybe we could eat most of Roberts' contract and send him to Chicago in the imminent deal for Crede. All of a sudden we would be looking at:

Vizquel
Durham/Frandsen
Winn
Bonds
Rowand
Molina
Crede
Aurilia/Ortmeier

That almost looks like a Major League line-up. Now, I'm not asking "should we sign Bonds?" It's a PR nightmare and there is way too much alienation on all sides. I'm just curious how many people on this site would be willing to put up with Bonds for one more year given the above scenario?

Re: Bonds intent on playing this year
I'd be more than happy to.

Realistically, like you say, there are too many problems and roadblocks for me to even fathom, but having him back in an imaginary non-damaging dreamworld scenario is a wet-dream of mine.

I'd be OK with it, but he'd need to be willing to find the swagger.

Re: Bonds intent on playing this year
I think Bonds' best bet is to stay in shape through May/June, at which point some team on the fringes of contention will be desperate enough to sign him despite all the legal issues.

No. I was ready to part with Barry before last season.

Let it go, Giants fans.  Just let it go.

In a related story, however, I'm intent on hooking up with some random ASU hottie while down in Spring Training.

Re: Bonds intent on playing this year
What would the point be?  It's not going to help them make the playoffs, and it just sets back whatever lame progress the Giants make forward.

Re: Bonds intent on playing this year
Most posters here would cut off body parts to get that to happen.  But that lousy lineup looks suspiciously like last years' lousy lineup.

Which probably makes it better than the lineup going into ST, but if they lose 90+ games either way, why not keep the $8M and find out if Lewis/Davis/Schierholz can do something? Or anything?  There's still only five teams in the division so it's unlikely the Giants can finish 6th.

Re: Bonds intent on playing this year
Face reality, Giant fans. Barry Bonds is gone and he's not coming back. And the Giants aren't the stupid ones here, because Barry back in the lineup still wouldn't be enough to win. The idiots are the AL GM's of contending teams who won't sign him as a DH even though that would probably put them over the top. Who needs a guy who's going to lead the league in OPS, walks, and on base percentage while hitting 40 homeruns??

Re: Bonds intent on playing this year
If we were able to unload Winn and Roberts (so the kids still had some room to play), we got a 1B who could really rake and was under control for awhile(Nick Johnson?), we got an above-average 3B (are any available that exist?), and we made a trade for one of the best set-up men in the game to solidify our pen... I'd take Bonds back for, say, the league minimum. (OK I'd give him 5m)

Letting Bonds go was the first sign of anything remotely resembling rebuilding (RRR). I hope he plays somewhere next year, but I'm intent on his him 10 million in deferred salary this year, or whatever it is, and trying to find out if any of our young OF's are any good. Just for giggles though....

Lewis/Davis RF
Frandsen 2B
Bonds LF
Johnson 1B
Rowand CF
Crede (GAG)
Molina C
Vizquel SS

It still isn't scary, but at least it'd come closer to 700 runs than 600.

I'm over him.

In the over-used ex-girlfriend analogy, she may look attractive and bring back memories, but when you consider the baggage and headaches that comes with hitting it once more for old time's sake, it's not worth it.

Hoping tk's recovery is faster than Raj going from first to third!

Re: Bonds intent on playing this year
It's what's sometimes known as the paradox of the balanced Libra: Baggage vs. Ass.

In this case I sadly agree with you that baggage actually tips the scales. But in other cases, when the stars do align, oh boy that's a decision I'm glad I never had to make.
