Here is some good news:
Jonathan Sanchez, meanwhile, wants to compete for the final rotation spot. He worked out back home in Puerto Rico this winter to add some muscle to his thin 6-2, 190-pound frame and showed up in Arizona on Jan. 6 to start working. He gained five pounds from his 2007 playing and already has noticed a difference so far in camp. He threw several bullpen sessions before his first official outing off the mound when camp opened Thursday.

"He's getting a little weight on, good weight," Bochy said of Sanchez.

The 25-year-old Sanchez has spent parts of the past two seasons in the majors, making eight total starts in 60 appearances and getting 98 strikeouts in 92 innings. He started 48 games in the minor leagues, then made the opening day roster for the first time last season.

While Sanchez would prefer to be a starter -- and is still being treated like one this spring -- he wants to stay in the big leagues no matter the role. Whatever happens, he knows he put in the time during the offseason. It's the hardest he's worked in a winter yet.

"I feel stronger," he said. "I think I'll be more consistent. I'm ready to go and want to fight for the fifth spot. In the majors, it's hard to get a spot. When you're a rookie, you have to establish a spot and it's hard to do. It doesn't matter where I finish. I just want to pitch."

and from MLB.com

Jonathan Sanchez may have found his arm slot. Finding a role for him is up to the Giants.

Unlike last year, when manager Bruce Bochy expressed reluctance to switch Sanchez between starting and relieving, the left-hander might fill whatever need happens to be the most pressing.

"We'll put him where we think he can help this ballclub," Bochy said Saturday.

Sanchez is challenging Kevin Correia for the fifth starter's spot, but although he's being "stretched out" to pitch multiple innings, moving to a relief role would not be a difficult transition, at least physically.

Meanwhile, Sanchez again looked sharp in his second throwing session off a bullpen mound. So far, he has eased the Giants' concerns about his struggles to repeat his delivery.

"It's going to make a big difference in his command of his pitches," Bochy said.

Has Sanchez ever been considered as a potential closer?  Random thought, his K rate and lack of great secondary pitch is the only thing that brings this to mind.

Update
There are indications from Chicago that if the White Sox deal third baseman Joe Crede to the Giants, they will accept prospects in return rather than a big-league pitcher.

Sabean said he isn't interested in trading for players he can't control. Crede has Scott Boras for an agent and is in the walk year of his deal. I still think it's more likely that he deals for Eric Chavez or Brandon Inge. By the way, for all you Giant fans who think the best move is to just wait for kids like Angel Villalona, Wendell Fairly and Nick Noonan to get here, that's alot of conceded baseball games, and alot of lost season ticket sales. I would hate to give up valuable kids in trades, but I would like to see the Giants field a decent team while we wait.

Re: Great news!
I think the time to worry about ticket sales in the late 2000's came and went a few years ago.  I think that the Giants should now put their primary focus on next decade.

If they can get players who are young enough that they might help next decade as they did with Aaron Rowand, that is just fine with me.  But the Giants have been myopic for years now.

It is said that when one fails to plan, he plans to fail.  Brian Sabean could not only attest but provide a personal example of that.

Re: Great news!
Sure, and there's no one else to play third base.  But I can't justify giving away future potential talent for either of them.  There's nothing wrong with trying to put out the best team you can even if you aren't likely to win anything.  But I think we all can agree that the Giants need to be targeting 2009 and beyond, mainly.  And if getting either of them hurts 2009 and beyond, then we should not get them.  Even if getting them means improving the 2008 Giants.

What Giants fan in their right mind gives a fucking shit about an unhealthy, below-average third-baseman on a last place team from another league that is not on their schedule, showing up to spring training. Its weenie enough to speculate on good players who are never gonna be Giants. But Joe "was pretty awesomely average a couple of years ago" Crede?

Re: Great news!
Alot of people around here have mentioned that the Giants won't be any good until around 2012, so they should literally not do anything to improve the ballclub until then. If I'm the GM of the 2008 Giants, I have to know that if all these fans are right I won't be around to see that good young 2012 team. Therefore I would be trying to improve the team immediately. The Giants came in last place in 2007 and after this offseason everyone in the world thinks it will again be in last place in 2008. That means the GM didn't do his job, doesn't it?? I look for Sabean to do something like a Crede, or a Chavez or a Sexson, or an Inge, or whatever happens to fall into his lap. If it works, he can laugh at all the doomsayers. If it doesn't, he's going to get fired anyway. What does he care if he fucks up the Giants 2012 dream in the process?? He'll be elsewhere anyway.

Re: Great news!

Well some of those names might have some coherent rational thoughts behind them. Crede however is not one of those names.  I may , or may not, agree with the rational but that's a different topic. Just to illustrate.

Sexson would probably be very cheap in talent if willing to eat the contract. It would be a classic lightning in a bottle move. He has also hit in the hart of the order which the Giants have a screaming need of.

Inge would also probably be very cheap in talent to acquire if  we are willing to eat the contract. He could at least fill 3rd with a good glove  for 1300 innings a season  for the next 3 years. That would double the number of position players the Giants could count on to provide more then 450 MLB average innings post All Star break '09.  Its not sexy, and the amount of value is debatable , but there is some value in all that. He could also  swing to other positions if the team finds an upgrade at third.

I won't address Chavez because I think Beane will hold him in the hopes of cashing in on any bounce back of health.

Re: Great news!
Your point is a good one, Mark, and I believe Brian Sabean HAS been trying hard to improve the Giants since LAST winter.  But he hasn't been nearly as successful in going after the top free agents as he had hoped.

If I were Brian Sabean, I would realize I had been living on borrowed time for several years now and would have been pleasantly stunned that the Giants re-signed me last summer.
