roster crunch/players out of options

so barring any changes, there seems to be an OF roster crunch. do all make the team? or do we see a trade sometime during spring training using the OF/pitching to get some 1b/3b depth? what do you think happens? both davis/lewis stick as 4th/5th OF's, Ortmeier at 1b?

The Giants confirmed that Fred Lewis, Rajai Davis and Dan Ortmeier are all out of options this spring.
There's not going to be enough at-bats for both Lewis and Davis while the starting outfielder are healthy, so ideally, one could back to the minors to play regularly. However, that probably won't happen. At the moment, all three players are penciled in for roster spots. Ortmeier could get the majority of the time at first base initially. Because so much of the competition is out of options, Nate Schierholtz appears to have no real chance of making the team.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
I think, barring trade, Nate goes down.  I kind of hope they play him a lot in C.F. down there so he is even better prepared to field right once a spot opens up on the big club. Other wise let Davis & Lewis fill the 4-5 outfielder spots tell another team needs an out fielder then ship Winn or Roberts.

The one move I can see Sabean thinking of as an answer is shipping Lewis or Davis for a Crede type player. I hope not considering how this team has no power and I doubt any such trade will change that . If you don't have power you need OBP with speed  massively more then if you have power.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
I think if the Giants want Nate for RF, where is arm may be better than Winn's, they should leave him in RF in Fresno.  Let him continue to mature in that position, get better reads off balls.  Speed conditioning should help him to navigate the Phone Booths RF better than time in Center.

If they want him to maybe play LF, then move him around.

Of course, without the Center Fielder label, Nate may never even get a fair chance at playing for the big league team... so by that logic, get him some starts in Center.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Nice point on speed conditioning.

I was just thinking more in terms of smoothing out his line of appoarch on some of the flies out there. He was not  bad just not polished yet.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
I'm just thinking that the perspectives change from CF -> RF, so a slicing ball has a different appearance depending on where the fielder is playing.  Moving a player around the outfield (or between infield to outfield (e.g. 3B-RF)) might mess with his line of approach rather than improve it.  Might.  I think if we are looking for polish, stick him in the same spot.  If we are looking for versatility, then yeah, move him around.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
I see no need for a roster crunch for the Giants.  First of all, only Freddie Lewis among the trio of Lewis, Ortmeier and Davis has much chance of being a productive player on a regular basis.  Secondly, the Giants could trade Randy Winn and -- if they ate some significant salary -- Dave Roberts to open up slots for the many young outfielders.  And as you mentioned, they also have a gaping hole at first base.

Heck, if any of those guys could play the hot corner, there's a bit of a black hole there, as well.

Can you imagine a team that hits as badly as the present Giants NOT being able to find a spot for a good hitter?

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Sadly sharksrog  I can. It was last called the `07 Giants.  The refusal to at least platoon Durham or call up McCain or Leone to soak up innings at the injury plagued poorly producing  first base ( June - August) pretty much paints a pattern that was exactly that.

Granted these were not "good" established hitters but they were upgrades in some measurable ways to they route the team was taking.

Re: McCain?
True he is old. When your 3rd baseman, pinch hitter  and a man who would become a knuckle ball pitcher that year put in almost 100 innings ( 97 for the sticklers) at a position and your utility player  spends 52% ( 371 out of 713 innings)  of his time there you have something beyond issues going on. Filler  Player X from planet Spazz ( complete with glove on the wrong hand)  would be an upgrade.

Re: McCain?
most definitely has the "warrior spirit" though.  and i doubt his inability to move his arms will cause him to hit any worse than aurilia, durham or roberts.  now, can he play centerfield?

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Nate is better off at AAA than as a fifth/sixth outfielder in the majors anyway

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Yeah, it just kinda sucks that he's forced into that position after proving himself at both levels last year.

I hate dave robert's contract.  It was so ill-advised.

Pedro Feliz: Marginally better this year.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Nate and Rajai and Fred Lewis and Eugenio Velez are better off in an organization that actually understands that just because some dick has a baseball card worth 10 cents instead of 6 cents, doesn't make him dick as an everyday player.

by E Ticket on Feb 16, 2008 6:25 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Nate would be better served in AAA getting consistent AB's, as would Velez (15 PA's down there?). My HOPE is that Roberts and Winn will be dealt, and that in the second half we'll have an OF of Lewis/Rowand/Schierholtz playing every day, with Davis filling in every couple days and pinch hitting. We should go into '09 knowing which of our 5 young OF's is worth a starting spot, if any.

Then we have to worry about which FA's to go after for '09.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Not to worry. Once we trade Lowry and Lewis for Crede and a middle reliever, everything will work itself out.

by Evan on Feb 16, 2008 4:22 PM PST   0 recs

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
It sounds as if the Giants are indeed going to acquire Joe Crede if he proves to be healthy -- and that they are going to trade prospects for him, not major leaguers.

Personally I would prefer to see the Giants keep the prospects and trade some of their older major leaguers for Joe.

San Jose Mercury News also states
Erick Threets, Merkin Valdez and Rule 5 guy Jose Capellan also risk being lost if they fail to make 25-man roster. Would not be surprised if SF makes a few trades before opening day to restructure their roster.

Reconstructive Surgery Is In Order
The front end of the 25-man roster needs a do-over as well. Would be SHOCKED if Sabean DIDN'T do something in March to restructure the junk he is presently aligning for us on Opening Day.

This hand is an el foldo, and cannot stand.

Re: Reconstructive Surgery Is In Order
we don't really have a front end of the roster, unless you mean our 1-4 starting pitching. i dont think there is much sabean can do at this point to make the team much BETTER, but it wouldn't make me cry if 3 of our middle relievers and 3 of our veterans disappeared just for the sake of starting over.
what WILL make me cry: giving capellan back because yabu looked really experienced, molina batting cleanup, roberts and/or winn on the '09 roster.

Re: Reconstructive Surgery Is In Order
I think he can make it better, but he can't make it contend. It all depends on how much salary the Giants are willing to take on. The same way kids like Schierholtz and Lewis make us want to get rid of guys like Roberts and Winn, hotshot kids in other organizations are going to make other GM's want to dump their higher priced players. The Giants could easily get some decent veterans if that's the route they choose to go.

Why in the world would the Giants NOT trade Steve Kline?  Why did they re-sign him to begin with?

nate will gain nothing going back to fresno...either make some other trades or trade him to a team that will give him a roster spot

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
I would just as soon cut them, trade them for a can of soup, whatever. They and durham and molina and vizquel and particularly rowand are the ghosts of sabean past. Rowand is the second coming of carpetbagging Bobby Murcer. Blah.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Depends on the soup. I'm partial to carrot and butterbean myself or homemade pumpkin, but would settle for a couple of leek and potatoes.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
The whole deal is obviously conditional on the soup having a very limited shelf life, idealy past its sell by date, and it being comfortable on the middle of the top shelf.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
I'd send Nate down to Fresno and have him play a lot at 1B.  That way, when/if Ortmeier fails, they can call up Nate as a "Plan B" at 1B.
Hoping tk's recovery is faster than Raj going from first to third!

As long as Taschner is not among the 25 man roster, I will consider '08 a success!

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
The Giants go 61-101 and trade Taschner, Lincecum and Cain for Joe Crede and Paul Konerko.
Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base. Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base. Steve Kline is pretty okay. Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base.

Jack needs a new trade
I think Taschner better start thinking about making a living after baseball. Maybe something like draining bathtubs, or pools. Or boils.

Re: Jack needs a new trade
I guess we Giants fans are of a collective character such that when Marvin Benard, Shawon Dunston, Jose Cruz, A.J. Pierzynski and Armando Benitez aren't around, we still have to have someone to hate.

I'm not sure what that says about us -- but I doubt it can be good.

You even forget the good
I can't feel much emotion either way concerning Taschner. I don't feel jack about Jack.

He had that terrific rookie summer. Since then, nothing.

Feh.

Re: roster crunch/players out of options
Maybe we could swap an OF for Justin Huber (another player who is out of options) of the Royals and let him play 1B. Of course, KC has a full OF already.
