The Baseball Analyst Ranks Cain and Lincecum

www.baseballanalysts.com

We continue our three-part series on the Best Young Players in Baseball. Unlike most prospect lists, players are categorized by age and major leaguers are also eligible for inclusion.

Matt is the third best 23 year old in the MLB (best pitcher), and Lincecum, who is slightly older, is the 8th best among 24 year olds.

What do you think?

Re: The Baseball Analyst Ranks Cain and Lincecum
accurate. oh, and who's that kid ranked just above lincecum for 24 year olds?  where did he come from?  a young lefty like that might look pretty good in between cain and lincecum, but then we probably wouldnt get the pleasure of paying zito 18 mil a year.
interesting that lincecum is ranked ahead of the much heralded alex gordon. conversation starter:  would you swap 'em?

Re: The Baseball Analyst Ranks Cain and Lincecum
Putting Liriano, who's been injured for over a year ahead of Tim seems to me like a weird choice (especially since he's always been an injury prone, and has pitched only one year in the Majors).

On the other hand, it's nice to see Cain ahead of both Billingsley and Kemp.

You deserve to be struck out, when your first name's a verb.

That was my only quibble. Nothing in Liriano's history suggests he'll ever be able to pitch 200 innings in consecutive seasons, but Lincecum's size and, subsequently, his endurance make the cut in his write-up, even though it has never been an issue at any level.

Re: The Baseball Analyst Ranks Cain and Lincecum
just to play devil's advocate- liriano was dominant when he pitched.  obviously timmy was very very very good and showed great promise and brief periods of dominance, but he wasnt quite like liriano.  but i'm inclined to agree with you too.  if i had to choose between the two i'd take timmy.  (but if i had the chance to trade timmy for a hothead mediocre catcher, then i might have to think about it.)

Re: The Baseball Analyst Ranks Cain and Lincecum
I'd take Lincecum ahead of everyone in his group except Ramirez and Kazmir.

The 25-year-old group is really remarkable.

I'd take him ahead of Kazmir too.
Here's to Kemp, Loney, LaRoche, Hu, and Kershaw not panning out.

Re: The Baseball Analyst Ranks Cain and Lincecum

I don't think you can fault putting Lincecum 4th among 24 y.o. pitchers.  Kazmir, Caroma, and Hamels all pitcher more innings with greater effectiveness.

Tim might (hi Rog!) have more potential than them.

I think it's a little silly to compare pitchers and position players in a ranked list, so I don't really think that matters.
