Help a girl out...
I'm interested in becoming one of the PA announcers for my school's baseball games, but they say that anyone who applies needs to "possess some knowledge of baseball." How would you define "some knowledge"? I mean, I can name all the positions and their numbers (4-6-3, for example), but I might need an assist in determining what is an error and what isn't and who to charge with it... I know I'm not the most knowledgeable baseball girl in the world, but do you think I've got a shot?

Re: Help a girl out...
as long as you know names and positions i think youll be fine.
you might want to learn some of the specific language of certain types of plays as well, such as the difference between a pop out and a fly out...

Maybe give out some pictures of pizzas and bottles of wine.

In recent years, though, I have found that you can't go wrong if you hang it on Brian Sabean.

"Error? What error? Everything's great! There you go again with your reality-based scoring. Now I want to find out the leaker who said there was an error and make sure that never happens again!"

Most important piece of advice:
Second most important: if they give you some anyway, don't take it.

Re: Help a girl out...
Minimizing the "can't brain, I have the dumb" moments are essential when doing anything in the public eye. Fake it till you make it. And if you do mess up, regroup. All that. If you're really worried about it you can pick up Baseball for Dummies or something. Even though it's written by Joe Morgan, there's a lot of good stuff in there.

Re: Help a girl out...
Following up on that: remember that when you do mess up (because you will, everyone does) you will notice way more of your mistakes than anyone else does. While you're feeling like an idiot for having said the wrong thing, only a few people even noticed, and they will have forgotten in a few minutes.
Regroup and move on. It's not a big deal.

The fact that you regularly visit a blog tells me you have enough.
Are you getting paid?

Re: Help a girl out...
I'm thinking Slo is right about just having to recap something along the lines of, "For the Flames in the 3rd, it's 1 run on 2 hits with 63 errors for the Chanticleers," and that I'm pretty sure I can do. Except I can't remember if the announcers in the past have also said "And that's an error to John Smith" should something like that happen. I guess I can always ask about that when they get back to me.
I asked you guys because I've learned more about baseball (like what the heck OPS really means as opposed to OBP) from you guys (and you make me laugh), so I figured that if anybody could help me out, it'd be the McCoven.
So, now all I have to do is wait for them to let me know the details, and hope for the best.

Re: Help a girl out...
Also, work with whomever is official scorer. Usually the umpires will communicate with the scorer to help make sure that player changes go noticed and even on things like errors and so forth. It's not unusual for errors to go unannounced for a few pitches, so don't worry too much about getting that out right away.
Other than that, I recommend going to as many pro games as possible and listen to the difference between how a home team's players get announced than the away team's. Some people love how Renel over-excites with the home team's players, others prefer how Oakland's announcer monotones on just about everyone.

Listen to the A's guy and the dude in Denver.
That's how the PA person is supposed to sound.

Re: Help a girl out...
BruteSentiment is right about the errors; they sometimes take awhile, and they shouldn't be your responsibility.
There is one aspect of the PA announcer that does play a role in the game. Managers have been known to make a counter move to a pinch-hitter before that pinch-hitter is announced. That allows the first manager to pull his pinch-hitter back without losing him. Once the pinch-hitter is announced though pulling him back takes him out of the game. So announcing pinch-hitters needs to be done in timely manner.
When I was a very young baseball fan I used to watch the game of the week broadcast by Dizzy Dean and Peewee Reese. I loved the way Diz always recapped the half inning. For example, (depending of course on the situation) "2 runs on 3 hits, one error, and 2 men left on base, and the score after 8 innings of play; the Giants 7 and the Dodgers nothing". Or: 4 runs on 3 hits, no errors and no men left on base, and the score after 1/2 inning of play, the Giants 4 and the Dodgers coming to bat.
If you love the game you will do alright.

Re: Help a girl out...
The cutoff for people to say they were interested is today, so I'm hoping to hear something from them soon. Thank you so much for all the words of encouragement, and I'll let you know how it turns out.
