more nick johnson speculation...again

I know, I know, most of you are tired of trade speculation and this is a name that has been kicked around quite a bit.  Buuuuut, I'm curious why there isn't more general excitement over a first baseman who plays great d, and can get on base with the best of 'em.  Johnson seems to be the odd man out in D.C. due to Bowden's man crush on "character guy" Dmitri Young. Washington needs pitching....we have pitching and need a corner infielder, or two, or three, or four.  (and another cf) Mostly, I wanted to get the thoughts of  Baron, Grant, Goofus or some of the other guys who have been around here longer and generally have interesting insight, but let loose with more Johnson jokes if you must.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
Why isn't there general excitement over Johnson?  Because the man can't take a step without breaking something.

He's one of the more injury prone players out there, and even if he is healthy in Spring Training, chances are he won't be two weeks into the season.  He just has terrible luck.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
yea, but when you consider that some sort of damaged goods is the best we can do?  nevermind i guess i just like the idea of Johnson filling two giant holes.  (4-hitter, 1B, and a blatant johnson joke i couldnt let anyone else beat me to)

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
Let's just say he's not the only Johnson who knows how to get on base, if you know what I mean!

Well I wouldn't call my insight here respected... more like, tolerated.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
Howie Johnson is right about Nick Johnson being the only Johnson to be able to get on base.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
I don't.
Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base. Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base. Steve Kline is pretty okay. Nate Schierholtz cannot play third base.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
Would rather have Dan Johnson. and no way i would give up either sanchez or sosa for Nick Johnson. Also the reason why Jim Bowden love Young so much is because he hit 310 last year and represented the Nationals in the All-Star game.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
really?  straight up, dan over nick?  why?  they both have serious injury problems, but i thought nick had quite a bit more upside with his d and obp.  i guess dan has more power.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
The last thing anybody wants is a unhealthy Johnson unable to perform.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
But that was the first time he ever did that good in his pro career.  But I'd rather have Nick Johnson than Dan because Dan's kinda crappy.  Nick when he's healthy is great, however rare that might be.  I would never ever consider giving up either Sanchez AND Sosa for him.  And I'd also be pretty reluctant about trading either of them alone for him because there still might be a huge chance that he hurts himself again.  I'd really really prefer a Chavez/Dan Johnson trade because it fills two needs at once and it also gives us a player that could anchor a cleanup spot if he stays healthy.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
ok i'll go with that.  i would give either sosa or sanchez for nick.  thats what the poll question was meant to be but obviously the a's wouldnt take just one of them for both chavy and dan and i'm in the middle of mid-term cramming so it got muddled in my head and in the poll. too bad scheming corner infield trades wont get me any points in political theory.  plato shoulda spent more time on oft-injured 1b and less on the form of the good and stupid cave allegories.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
dont forget dmitri did hit two or maybe three homers on opening day for the tigers a couple years back.  putting him on pace for about 500.

Wait, you were hoping to get Goofus' thoughts on the subject, but avoid cheap Johnson jokes?

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
I don't want a Johnson that doesn't see any action.  I want a Johnson that can get up and play the field.
Bochy: grounded until he stops hitting and running with slow runners and crappy hitters

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
I never liked johnson's swing; it's always sorta limp and flaccid, like he's not even trying.  Maybe if we traded for Eva(n) Longoria, he'd play a little more upright, a little stiffer every day.
Pedro Feliz: Marginally better this year.

Re: more nick johnson speculation...again
I always thought Johnson's swing had a small hole in it.
