Sweeney, Clark both gone

Mike Sweeney has agreed to terms for a minor league deal with the A's, where he'll probably DH and somehow injure himself.  Tony Clark signed a one-year deal with the Padres for 900K.  He'll probably suck there, seeing as SD has pretty much the only park out there that drains more power than ours does.

As far as I'm concerned, that's two more bullets dodged this offseason.  Sweeney would have probably thrown out his back on the first day of actually playing a position with us.  I still don't get how you can get injured by getting up every hour or so and swinging a bat a few times and running the few times you actually hit the ball. And as for Clark, he probably would've been mediocre with us, but it still would've been a waste of space and money on our roster because even him at his best wouldn't make us a competing team unless we were in the NL Central.  We might as well field someone that would probably suck but might turn out to be good and stick with the team long term than add yet another short-term solution.  Thoughts?

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
Signing Tony Clark to a 1 yr $900,000 deal would have been a reasonable investment.
  • LHH with power off the bench
  • plays 1b so can be a fallback Plan B
  • good clubhouse influence for the kids
  • inexpensive
  • could be flipped at trade deadline

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
any chance dan johnson is even more available now?  dont like the idea of dealing with billy but maybe, just maybe, we can pawn off an outfielder?  raj for dan johnson?  i dont love it, but it fills a hole with a youngish (at least not old) guy who has shown he can produce when healthy.  i've already accepted the fact that dave roberts will start in left so at least it clears a little more playing time for nate and fred right?

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
I doubt this makes Johnson any more expendable to them; they signed Sweeney to a minor league contract so it wouldn't cost them anything.  I think they did this because they know he's probably going to get hurt again. And also I think that if he did return to form and not get injured, they would only want him until the trade deadline so they could toss him for prospects.

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
Not opposed to this line of thinking, but Raj seems to be a good platoon compliment to Roberts.

I wonder what it would take to bring a Chavez/Johnson package across the bay?  (Insert "to be a true package, you must include a nice johnson" joke here.)

If they'd want to shed Chavy's contract, Johnson might sweeten the pot.

Chavez and Johnson at the corners would be a definite upgrade and let Frandsen compete for the job at 2B.

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
lewis plus sanchez?  that would make sense for the rotation ready pitching and outfield starved a's wouldnt it?  i saw they are asking for laroche, ethier AND a prospect for blanton though so i guess billy b is really shootin for the moon in selling all his guys off.  i know lowry isnt quite on blanton's level, but he's been about as successful (albeit in the NL) and i can imagine the response sabean would get if he asked for an ethier/laroche/prospect type package for noah.

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
I'd like the deal a lot more if it was Roberts and Sanchez, but I might be inclined to give up Lewis, especially if Chavez proves he's healthy.

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
I like that idea a lot.  Especially the part with the dick joke.  I think that might actually be doable, especially since they don't really need Johnson with Daric Barton waiting for a shot and Chavez will only cost them money regardless of how he does.  BB was the one who said you should be as bad as possible when you're not going to compete.  We would probably only have to give up something like a package of Sanchez/Sergio Romo/Lewis or something like that.  They might bite on that if we offered to take on all of Chavy's contract.

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
Yeah, a lineup of

LF - Roberts/Raj
2B - Frandsen
RF - Winn
3B - Chavez
CF - Rowand
1B - Johnson
C - Molina
SS - Vizquel

Seems infinitely more watchable.

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
What's wrong with Sweeney throwing out his back the first time he plays for us? I'd be more scared of him being healthy enough to play every day, poorly. Or that he'd be a little bit better than Ortmeier, and take 350 AB's from him. I wouldn't mind him toiling in the minors, and coming up when Ort has a Lindenian (Lindenesque?) fall or when Aurilia is DFA'd.
Signing Clark for under a million and spinning him at the deadline wouldn't bother me. Ortmeier getting under 300 AB's and Clark being on the roster at the end of the season would.

both would've been upgrades
they are no risk deals

same goes  for casey to boston

its not like the giants had anything better currently on the team

this does open up the possibility that A's trade Dan Johnson, not sure what his value is

Re: both would've been upgrades
I'm less sure that Sabean would see any value in a hitter with averages in the .230's the last couple years. And I'm afraid that as a long-term solution, he simply won't be a big enough upgrade for a team that'll probably be mediocre in the OF, middle-IF, and at C for the next few years. I'd also question how well his power will translate at AT&T. That said, sure would LOVE to have a young hitter with some power!

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
I thought it was pretty obvious when Sabean said he hopes the phone doesn't ring, that he wouldn't be signing any of these remaining free agents. I was hoping he would upgrade, but none of these guys out there really makes the Giants any better so I guess they might as well stand pat. I guess they realize it's better if they lose with the kids than if they lose with vets like Clark or Sweeney. Losing with old guys provides no hope whatsoever, and you can at least think there might be better days ahead if you lose with your kids.

I think Comerica also is a power drainer.  And Yankee stadium (pre-redo)for righties...

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
I'd still like to see the Giants bring in Mientkiewicz. If Sabean manages to swing a deal for an actual up-and-comer like Kendry Morales, great; just cut or trade Minky.

I know that since the Giants are unlikely to compete, it doesn't "matter" whether the Giants have horrible production or merely poor. But going into the season with no lefty platoon mate for Ortmaurilia amounts to baseball malpractice. It tells the fans and the players that management is just phoning it in.

Re: Sweeney, Clark both gone
A minor-league contract, with a joke team, one that happens to be well stocked in first basemen. I think we can safely assume that Sabean didn't put in a bid.

I think we're down to Shawn Green now. Maybe Trot Nixon.
