Guess the Comparable Pitcher!

The 2008 Pecotas are starting to come out. They're ugly. You could have guessed that.

But can you guess which current Giants pitcher or prospect has one of the following pitchers as one of his top four comps? Please, no wagering.

Okay, wagering. What do I care.

  1. Dave Stewart
  2. Tug McGraw
  3. Vinegar Bend Mizell
  4. Darren Dreifort
  5. Jung Bong
  6. Paul Spoljaric, Yorkis Perez, Arnold Earley, Mickey Mahler*
  7. Felix Rodriguez
  8. Damian Moss
  9. Antonio Alfonseca
  10. Phil Hughes, Matt Cain, Roy Halladay
* included only because this is the best collection of names ever.

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
I was going to guess "Matt Cain" but it seems unlikely that his no. 10 comparable would be himself.

I'm going with Zito, because it would destroy my psyche if it was Lincecum.

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
Sorry, I wrote this poorly. There are ten questions and ten answers. Stew is a comp for one Giants pitcher, Tug for another, etc.

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
Ah, didn't see the part where it could be a prospect.  Screw it, my guesses stand.

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
I think this is a much better guess than Tim Lincecum. Personally.
He is Vengeance. He is the Knight. He is Dave Righetti. PRAY TO HIM!

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
you know, I think Matt Cain's best comp is himself!
Pedro Feliz: Marginally better this year.

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
I won't guess, because I already downloaded them. But here's a hint: Lowry's projection is something close to your worst nightmare.
there is no pain greater than being behind the Rockies in the standings

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
He's Damian Moss, isn't he? ISN'T HE?
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
ding ding ding!

also, with lowry's peripherals a 4.72 ERA is not my worst nightmare...honestly i wouldnt have been suprised to see an projection over 5.00

what did surprise me is the IP projections for the Giants rotation
cain: 168.7 IP
lincecum: 140.2 IP
zito: 158.0 IP
lowry: 106.2 IP

seriously??? even ignoring lincecum and lowry, what evidence is there to support the big drop in cain (200 IP last year) and zito (196.2 IP last year, like 215 IP avg over his career)

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
PECOTA likes Sanchez. It Doesn't LIKE him, but it likes him.

Dave Stewart: Kevin Correia. Nice, right? Greybeards will remember that Stewart was a top prospect who flopped, bounced around for a while, and finally became a great pitcher at the age of 29 when he got his head together and discovered the forkball. Hard to see any predictive value for Correia in all that, but it's fun to imagine.

Tug McGraw: Jonathan Sanchez. One of the best lefty relievers ever? I'd take that. Maybe Sanchez should learn a screwball. Does anyone even throw a screwball anymore?

Vinegar Bend Mizell: Zito. Mizell was a lefty with a big curve who pitched for the Cards in the fifties, and wound up his career with the '62 Mets at the age of 31 (uh-oh). He went on to become a Republican congressman and an apparatchik in the Ford and Reagan administrations. I'm pretty sure Zito won't track his career that far.

Dreifort: Brian Wilson. Dreifort had one of the highest hype-to-performance ratios in major-league history, but he had flashes of greatness in between injuries.

Jung Bong: Clayton Tanner. I just like to namecheck Jung Bong whenever possible.

Spoljaric et al: Taschner. Unimpressive bullpen lefties all.

Felix Rodriguez: Henry Sosa.

Moss: Lowry.

Alfonseca: Messenger. He also has Dan Wheeler among his comps.

Hughes/Cain/Halladay: Tim Alderson. I don't know how you get a comp for a pitcher with five professional innings, but still, schwing.

other top comps:

Cain: Smoltz
Lincecum: Billy Loes (Dodgers pitcher in the '50s ... had a good rookie season, then years of mediocrity)
Hennessey: Jeff Shaw
Ortiz: Kent Mercker
Bumgarner: Trever Miller

Dave Stewart, huh?
I didn't realize he didn't become a dominant pitcher until he joined LaRussa's A's...  kinda interesting...

Are you saying the extremely high pitched voice was related to testicle shrinkage from the juice?

Lince: No possibility of a sophomore jinx
Evan...

The Pecotas have been FOREVER STAINED for comparing Lincecum to a DODGER, and worse, a DODGER NOBODY ONE-AND-DONE.

Billy Flippin' Loes.

The freakin' nerve.
