Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
The 2008 Pecotas are starting to come out. They're ugly. You could have guessed that.
But can you guess which current Giants pitcher or prospect has one of the following pitchers as one of his top four comps? Please, no wagering.
Okay, wagering. What do I care.
- Dave Stewart
- Tug McGraw
- Vinegar Bend Mizell
- Darren Dreifort
- Jung Bong
- Paul Spoljaric, Yorkis Perez, Arnold Earley, Mickey Mahler*
- Felix Rodriguez
- Damian Moss
- Antonio Alfonseca
- Phil Hughes, Matt Cain, Roy Halladay

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
I'm going with Zito, because it would destroy my psyche if it was Lincecum.

Re: Guess the Comparable Pitcher!
also, with lowry's peripherals a 4.72 ERA is not my worst nightmare...honestly i wouldnt have been suprised to see an projection over 5.00
what did surprise me is the IP projections for the Giants rotation
cain: 168.7 IP
lincecum: 140.2 IP
zito: 158.0 IP
lowry: 106.2 IP
seriously??? even ignoring lincecum and lowry, what evidence is there to support the big drop in cain (200 IP last year) and zito (196.2 IP last year, like 215 IP avg over his career)

Tug McGraw: Jonathan Sanchez. One of the best lefty relievers ever? I'd take that. Maybe Sanchez should learn a screwball. Does anyone even throw a screwball anymore?
Vinegar Bend Mizell: Zito. Mizell was a lefty with a big curve who pitched for the Cards in the fifties, and wound up his career with the '62 Mets at the age of 31 (uh-oh). He went on to become a Republican congressman and an apparatchik in the Ford and Reagan administrations. I'm pretty sure Zito won't track his career that far.
Dreifort: Brian Wilson. Dreifort had one of the highest hype-to-performance ratios in major-league history, but he had flashes of greatness in between injuries.
Jung Bong: Clayton Tanner. I just like to namecheck Jung Bong whenever possible.
Spoljaric et al: Taschner. Unimpressive bullpen lefties all.
Felix Rodriguez: Henry Sosa.
Moss: Lowry.
Alfonseca: Messenger. He also has Dan Wheeler among his comps.
Hughes/Cain/Halladay: Tim Alderson. I don't know how you get a comp for a pitcher with five professional innings, but still, schwing.
other top comps:
Cain: Smoltz
Lincecum: Billy Loes (Dodgers pitcher in the '50s ... had a good rookie season, then years of mediocrity)
Hennessey: Jeff Shaw
Ortiz: Kent Mercker
Bumgarner: Trever Miller

Lince: No possibility of a sophomore jinx
The Pecotas have been FOREVER STAINED for comparing Lincecum to a DODGER, and worse, a DODGER NOBODY ONE-AND-DONE.
Billy Flippin' Loes.
The freakin' nerve.
