Sabean on KNBR...
Sabean flat out said that the team has not made any contact with Sabathia and isn't all that interested. He also said that he doesn't think Texiera is a franchise player who should get franchise money. Did have great things to say about the Big Unit though. Not that I was really all that interested in the Giants picking up texeira, but to flat out say they have no interest in Sabathia just sucks.

This doesn't make sense
Everybody in the baseball world except Brian Sabean keeps saying the Giants are interested in Sabathia.
I hope he’s just trying to be a good businessman, because even if we added Cantu/Encarnacion/Blalock, this team as it stands right now is not very good.

He also basically said he’s not interested in Cantu/Encarnacion/Blalock, because they’re all flawed players and the amount he’d have to give up to get them would be too much.

Nah, if he was that weak he’d have killed himself already. Or more likely quit. This guy was wedded to this image of himself as a good guy, everybody’s friend, convinced he was that person. Then halfway through April you got one nut on SFGate (granted, it’s SFGate) calling for his murder, and a month ago Ostler names him one of the 5 most hated sports figures in the Bay Area. I’d have suicided-by-cop a long time ago. It would be goddamn inspiring if he just, like, won more than eleven games for 18 mil/yr.

With Sandoval hitting third and BMoney hitting cleanup Lewis is going to be “settling” for plenty of singles. Sandoval is the better hitter however Lewis is the better OBP and faster runner so could possibly replace each other in line-up yet maintain the left/right/left Bochy likes.

Interesting on Posey
Earlier the organization was thinking 300 minor league games for Posey which would put ETA around 2011. Now it seems Sabean wants to push that up to 2010.
No need to push Bumgarner. Alderson has at least pitched at Advanced A ball and AA awaits the kid. If excels there could see soon.

It was pretty uncomfortable listing to this.
I always check out KNBR online whenever they interview someone having to do with the Giants, and noticed in the past how Sabean and Ralph are ususally pretty friendly, with Sabean having a weekly show on their during the season.
But that interview was anything but friendly. Sabean did not seem happy to be on there today. Ralphs always been an idiot, but Sabean was rather dick-ish today. He usually will humor Ralph when he asks his saltalamacchia like questions but this time he just laughed.

I don’t think he wants to telegraph any moves. I could still see them signing someone who could help, like Joe Crede (for example, if Crede will take a reasonable 1-year deal). But a lot of the big names need to be signed to firm up the market and then the rest of the dominoes will start to fall.

A 32 year old SS (or 2b) with suspect defense and declining offensive numbers (who currently plays in an offensive yard) is about to make $16M over each of the next 5 years (5 year/$80M).
The Rangers would have to chip in nearly all of that to make it work.

Actually he can play shortstop. He currently does play shortstop. His Gold Glove was deserved this year, albeit by default because Yunensky Betencourt can’t get his shite together. I like him as a second baseman, but his versatility could be a huge asset in three years if Nick Noonan is ready to go.

The tide turned on the ’don’t take it personally’ shore when someone told me to use my brain. I’ve refuted every point of the case against Young except for the numbers. I am not going to waste my time getting into house-of-cards debate about the “decline” of Mike Young. Fact is he had one phenominal year, one down year, and two great years in between. Just because that can be framed to indicate a decline doesn’t make it a decline.
Young is an intensity ball player that would fit perfectly with the current organizational philosophy. He plays the game right. He gets 700 ABs a year, which should be an outstanding pro on the pros-and-cons list. But, when someone wants to crap on a high-salaried guy by using spin to denounce everyday play as a negative, I can’t hardly take any of that person’s statistical analysis seriously.
Rich Aurilia wasn’t the greatest defensive shortstop in the league either, but the Giants went to the World Series with him and a pitchers like Kirk Rueter and Livan Hernandez.
HOWEVER, in my initial statement about Young, I said I’d move him to second base. Everyone is in a tizzy over his defense as a shortstop. Meanwhile, I’m talking about moving him to second where his sure-handedness and footwork around the bag will cause him to excel. It will probably tack 10 points onto his batting average as well.
Money is money, and most teams don’t trade for HOF caliber players until they lose a step. To get guys like that in their prime, a team has to develop them within their own organization. Otherwise, you have to drop a bundle to get greatness. And Young is great. Five 200 hit seasons in a row. I’m sorry, that is an absolute phenomenon. I don’t care what ballpark he plays in.
And no, I am not Young’s brother. I am a Giants fan. Have been my whole life. I know a thing or two about baseball. So when people imply that I am stupid, or say I don’t research my ideas, I take offense. Sorry if my manners don’t suit you.

I hear you. And I didn’t really disengage. I didn’t really have time to concentrate on an in-depth debate this afternoon. I’m receptive to xanthan’s thoughts, and oldjacket made his point fairly enough. I don’t agree that a four-year window tells the whole story though. In stats ananysis, one must consider the mean, and Young’s numbers in ’06 & ’07 are consistent with his numbers from ’03 & ’04, as is the midset of ’05 & ’08.

FINE
Quadruple slash the last four years:
.331/.385/.513/.898
.314/.356/.459/.815
.315/.366/.418/.784
.284/.339/.402/.741
OPS+ the last four years:
131
108
107
96
wRAA (weighted runs above average, based on wOBA) the last four years:
38
13
9
2
UZR (widely considered the best defensive metric) the last four years:
-27.1
-3.7
-10.1
-3.9
These numbers paint the picture of a player who is in serious decline offensively, while providing -5 to -10 runs of defense. There’s not much reason to believe that he is going to get better with the bat or in the field since he’s already 32 and has been declining for some time now. He is currently about a league average player who is under contract for $16 million a year through 2013, his age 36 season. This contract is a disaster.
You are wrong. The only reply you should make now is:
I’m sorry, I was wrong. I don’t know what I was thinking. In the future, I will actually look things up before spouting off whatever nonsense pops into my head.

I think
To convert wOBA for a hitter into wins: (wOBA – .338) / 1.15 * 700 / 10.5 will give you wins above average. (The .338 is whatever the league average wOBA is, which is EXACTLY equal to whatever the league average OBP is; 1.15 is the relationship between wOBA and runs; 700 is the number of PA per 162 games; 10.5 is the relationship between runs and wins.)

Come on, you know that spouting 200 hits for 5 straight years is not any evidence of exceptional skill. Intuitively, you have to know that. He’s been getting 700+ PA routinely, he damn well better have 200 hits. jponry posted his OPS+ trend already, but just to blow up your 200 hit argument, here are his hit totals from the last four years:
221 > 217 > 201 > 183 – bad news bears
Please note that I don’t think those hit total trends mean a damn thing, they are just the natural outcome of his eroding talent. Then, you add shitty defense and a long, monster contract, and you have one of the worst contracts in baseball.

It’s probably relevant of some “skill” — good at contact — but it can also mean that a player had a BUNCH of PA’s. Juan Pierre has gotten over 200 hits in his career a bunch of times but he was also getting 750+ PA’s in a season. That’s a lot of chances.

Pierre has had four 200 hit seasons in his career, and only two in a row. Also, Pierre is much faster, and he is left-handed. Kirby Puckett is probably the best pure right-hadned hitter of the past 20 years in terms of hit production, and his bet was four consecutive 200 hit seasons.

yeah but,
I think it’s more impressive getting 200 hits in the middle of the order, where you don’t pile up as many at-bats. Hitting in the Texas stadium (where outs can be hard to come by) gives Young more opportunities and helps him get the hits, too.

Yeah, but it does go back to my point that Young is getting a bunch of chances to compile 200 hits in a season, way more than most players.
Year PA 2003 713 2004 739 2005 732 2006 748 2007 692 2008 708
That’s good for him, because it means he’s been healthy enough to play almost every game in a season. But, the fact that he’s getting 200 hits is just as much of a byproduct of opportunity than it is skill.
I don’t hate Young, but I do hate his contract and he can’t play SS. This isn’t a point that you can argue. He’ll be 32-years-old next season and still locked into a contract until he’s 36-years-old. Again, decent hitter, terrible defender, and has a really bad contract.

Ralph basically yelled at Sabean that the Benitez signing was a disaster, Sabean got understandably defensive, and then basically implied to the Lunatic Fringe that if the fans forced him to release Benitez, it wouldn’t make the team any better.
One of Ralph’s many faults is that he thinks he has these brilliant insights on how the Giants should be run, insights that no one else does. Plus he just finds specific players to complain about and then harps on it for years and years. We get it, Ralph: the Benitez signing was dumb and Zito shouldn’t have been given that contract. There’s no need to bring it up every week with the Giants GM. You can tell it bugs the shit out of Sabean, and I can’t say I blame him.

I don’t think he is either. The only time Tex has been in the Top 10 in any significant offensive categories is when he was in Texas. And that only has happened once or twice. He’s a very very good player, but not an elite one. He’s going to be on his 4th team in 3 years, I don’t see how a franchise player would be allowed to traded away or leave via FA (in this instance) that many times.
Is he Albert Pujols? No.
Manny? No.
Chipper Jones? Nah.
Then again I would argue there are very few elite players…and I’m sure people would disagree.
