The Giants on TV?
What's the best cable company to go with in the Bay Area for the Giants? It's hard to tell what network the Giants are going to be on next season. It sounds like MLB's network is coming out in 2009, which DISH decided not to pick up. But will I really have to get this package in order to watch most SF games or will they be broadcast on basic cable like they have in the past?

I’m pretty sure they’ll still be on Comcast SportsNet.

comcast sportsnet is the main channel. I think games were also played on The CW.

It should be whatever NBC affiliate is in your area for the broadcast TV games.

if you live in the Bay Area you should get Comcast SportsNet with whatever cable package you get. The Giants are actually a part owner of CSN Bay Area, probably 140 of their games will be on that channel. I would go with DirecTV, it’s light years better than cable.

Doesn’t Comcast have more HD options?
I uased to hate Comcast, but with the digitial DVR and and HD channels, my opinion of them has improved notably*.
Yes, I do mean “notably”. Everyone should take note of my opinions.

DirecTV user
chiming in. I’m waaayyy out of the area and origianally got DirecTV so I could get the Giants games.
Now with CSN HD it pretty freaking awesome. My $72 package includes (DVR service two TV’s), 49 HD channels (ESPN’s Food,TLC History,TNT,Spike,ETC), Locals HD, and the Northern California Sports pack ( 4 CSN’s 2 HD, and CSSCA).
Cable does not touch it for the price., and the HD on about half broadcasts in 1080i. Tough to place the dish if you live in a condo or apartment though.

Will Dish
have the MLB network? And if it does, does anyone know if it will pick up most all of the Giants games?

Nah
No Sunday Ticket on cable.
Check out The Examined Life. Or don't. Whatever.

Consumer Reports would disagree
As of their March issue, there is a higher majority of satellite users that are pleased with their service than those that have cable.

Our Comcast was horrid, it went out everytime it rained. Then Mr. Merope decided he wanted Sunday Ticket so we got DirecTV. The satellite thing is okay… so long as the wind isn’t blowing. Seriously, we have a very small window of satellite reception and the neighbor’s trees sometimes get in the way! Satellite is tough in an apartment complex, you need to consider location, and where/how to run the cables. Our complex won’t let you drill additional holes in the walls to run the cables, so we have these flat co-ax dealies that come in through the sliding glass door, that we have to replace every 3-4 months.
All those problems pale in comparison to the damn TIVO box. Personally I think the thing is on crack – I’m not sure what else could account for it’s erratic behavior.

Baseball is a radio sport.
Still-proud, adoptive mama of Notgardo Alfonzo, who's back from the 50-game purgatory. He promises never to do it again. I couldn't get him to promise to hit, though. We're working on that with bribes of M&Ms, kind of like potty training.

Especially when you can grow up listening to legends like Vin Scully, Dick Enberg working on your bike in the garage.

Sadly...
for me it was Jerry Coleman and Vin Scully. As a Giants fan in San Diego circa 1970’s, it was awful difficult to get news on your team unless they were in town. The Dogders of course, were all over the freakin radio.
I really, really like Miller and Fleming. Sometimes I’ll stay in car to hear their call even after I get home. Nothing against Kruk and Kuip, but Miller tells paints a picture every at bat. His comments are pretty direct sometimes, and I wonder how he gets away with them.

Until I got Slingbox...
it was only Miller and Flemming for me on MLB-subscribed Internet radio. Even now sometimes I eschew the Slingbox and listen to Miller. He’s that good.

From Wikipedia
“He eventually signed a contract directly with the Orioles and, while the broadcast rights eventually moved to another station, Miller remained their primary announcer through 1996. At the end of that season, new Orioles owner Peter Angelos, displeased with Jon’s often candid commentary of the Orioles play, declined to renew his contract, citing a desire for a broadcaster who would "bleed more orange and black”.
Angelos wanted a “Homer” who never called him out on his sh*t. Imagine that. A little bit of homerism is fine, but some of the guys are unlistenable.

don't get me wrong...
last year I probably heard about 80 percent of the Giants radio broadcast. But, I decided it’s about time to move into the 21st century.

On a semi-related note, does anyone know what package/tier MLB Network will be on with Comcast? I can’t find anything out there on the subject.

Here’s MLB press release and promo video
The article states they will list local information soon. Not much concrete information on schedules or cost. I have heard free, but cannot find any verification of that. I do know that Comcast, Cox, and Time Warner own a combined 1/3 share, with MLB owning 2/3.

Thanks. I’m hoping the channel is available on the same package as NFL Network and NBA TV and all that, because it’s $5 more a month to add those to our current package. It’d be win-win if it worked out that way.
