C.C. Sabathia, Part XVII

From the L.A. Times:

The official said the Giants are interested in CC Sabathia, the ace pitcher who grew up in the Bay Area. The official would not confirm whether the Giants had offered a contract to Sabathia but said they would need to make other moves before they could sign him.

While I'm not a big fan of committing $120M over six seasons to another pitcher, if the math is something like...:

$120M (Sabathia joining the team)
-
$44M (Rowand going away)
=
Sabathia for 6 years/$76M!

...I could be interested. Fuzzy math, sure. But I'm worried that this will be the last year that Rowand's contract is tradable. Other than Rowand, there isn't a tradable player whose salary can help make room for Sabathia's salary.

Or, and I hate to even bring this up, but maybe I shouldn't pay attention to every stray rumor from the Winter Meetings.

Nah. Where's the fun in being prudent and respectable?

In other words, they need to move some bad contracts first. That is not going to happen.

Frankly

I think Rowand may be MORE tradeable after next season IF he rebounds.

Also, I should point out that I don’t think Rowand is useless. He just isn’t worth the investment on a team with Randy Winn.

If they sent a top-shelf pitching prospect and a sizable chunk of money along for the ride.

I feel like I dragged howee into my lynching here…I find Seinfeld very formalistic. I never saw it when it was a weekly, so perhaps my initial exposure to it in syndication amplified my response.

They had some good performances later on..

Sure they were fewer and farer in between than earlier (pretty much every early ‘69 show I’ve heard is amazing) but there were still good shows in ‘75 and ’77. And you can’t say all of In Through The Out Door and Presence are horrible.

Actually,

I thought the show was very funny sometimes. But it was very New York-centric, which could make it annoying sometimes. There were some funny concepts, but ultimately, whether it’s comedy or drama, what separates the great from the good is the writing. The writing on Seinfeld was very good, but certainly not the best ever.

the thing with moving rowand’s contract is the team that would be most able and interested to take his contract off our hands would be the yankees… they need a cf, they’ve got the cash, and they may still be persuadable that vet savvyness and gritty, team play are the way to go. unfortunately, i can’t see cashman being dumb enough to essentially give us the financial flexibility to sign the guy he really wants, sabathia.

but those considerations aside… a winn, lewis, schierholtz OF plus sabathia in the rotation… yeah, i could get behind that. But every time i think of making some gargantuan offer for c.c. i just can’t help thinking that I’d much rather add $20 mil to it and go after Tex— the one really sure thing on the whole damn market.

I don't know

Has seemed like Sabathia’s camp is trying to create a bidding war for him with the west coast teams. The NY Post article from last week read like it was written by his agent, talking about how he wants to play for the Giants but their $100M offer is just a little low, and how the Angels might have cleared their agenda in order to make an offer.

Aside from the fact that it would be hard to find a team willing to take on Rowand’s absurd contract, I keep wondering this: can anybody remember a case where somebody signed a long term contract and then was traded within about a year or so? I really can’t think of a case of this happening. When you sign a guy to a long term contract it seems like you are stuck with him for at least a while, barring some kind of extenuating circumstance.

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 8, 2008 7:54 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That is a good one. But, this would be very rare right? I think something like that would be very frowned upon and every future free agent the Giants talk to would say “are you really going to honor my contract or are you just going to trade me as soon as your plans change?” If this were to have a chance to happen (and obviously it doesn’t anywhere outside of weblog rosterbatrion immagination land) they better make sure Rowand is extremely on board with it.

Sanchez not on the block
The Giants aren’t planning to trade lefty Jonathan Sanchez because of the questions surrounding Noah Lowry, another left-hander who is working to come back from nerve surgery on his forearm that cost him the 2008 season and also a procedure on his elbow in October to remove bone spurs.

“It’d be very difficult to trade him, given Lowry’s what-if, and we need another starter on top of that,” Sabean said.

Between Rowand and Sabathia...

…I’d rather have Rowand.

He may be superfluous on a team with Winn, but the Giants are a team with Winn guaranteed, at most, for just one more season. And does anyone want to sign him past that?

And how many players are out there, or within the system, that can replace Rowand’s bat OR defense in center field? (Hint: it’s not Fred Lewis…I wish it was.)

The Giants have at least one pitcher as good as Sabathia, and could very well have another soon.

Replacing Rowand’s defense might not be as hard as you think. I bet Winn could play CF just as well right now. Like this moment. Rowand was lousy defensively last year.

A Tall of Two Halves

If the first half Rowand shows up for the entire 2009 season then SF will have “found” at least .5 of a bat. Sandoval performing well is at least another .5 of a bat. Renteria brings another .5 of a bat to the line-up. Now add Teixeira and voia.

Per the Baggarly article a short while ago,

and others from earlier in the day, the Giants aren’t seriously engaged on CC, and haven’t yet bitten on trading Sanchez for E5, Blalock, or Cantu. Notice that Garrett Atkins’ name didn’t make that list.

Yet Baggarly says that Pablo will be our 3B next year, which could be smoke. It may also mean though that Sabean will leave Vegas empty-handed and return to looking at FA first baseman options, like Pat the Bat or even Dunn. Yet strangely no one has approached the Mariners about Beltre.

My guess is that if you read between the lines of what has been reported so far, we can forget about CC or a big trade this week, and Sabean will go with Ishi/Phelps at 1B.

In other words, we’ll have slightly better relief pitching and offense in 2009, and will win about 5 more games.

Yeah, I know.

I suspect Sabean’s plan really is:

1. He ain’t trading Sanchez for any of those losers at 3B, and will go with Pablo;
2. He WOULD trade Joseph Martinez and Jack Taschner for Hank Blalock to play 1B next year.
3. He’ll keep Sanchez after all, because of concerns over Lowry.
4. He’d deal Rowand for damn near anything; and
5. If that happens, hello Adam Dunn.

CC'ya

We lost out on CC when we gambled and lost on Zito. I have mixed feelings anyway. I think he’s going to be like Pedro Martinez for the Mets — a real difference maker initially but injury ridden in the out years. But it would be fun to watch him hit and I love that he’s local. Given our ability to draft pitchers, we shouldn’t look to the free agent market for them. I’m looking for a significant bounceback from Rowand and praying for a midyear trade to get value back. The Yankees really do need him and he’s fit in well there.

by NearestNorwich on Dec 8, 2008 9:17 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I mostly don’t want CC on the Yankees because I want Yankees’ fans to know what it means to root for a bad team (and third place behind the Rays and Sox doesn’t count). Jeter’s game is already declining, and they can’t count on much from Damon or Matsui. It doesn’t look like Posada can catch any more. They might go into next year with just two proven starting pitchers, one of whom might be due for a sophomore slump (Chamberlain, first full year as ML starter). It could get ugly in the Bronx in a year or two if they don’t sign CC and I’d just love to watch that unfold.

Yea.

You can’t look to fulfill (really? it’s fulfill? that’s what Firefox is telling me at least..) all of your needs from your farm system. You can’t look at getting 5 starters from your minors, you can’t look at getting 7 relievers from your minors, you can’t look at getting 4-5 OFs from your minors. You can try and get a majority of those positions from your minors if you have skill with that, but that’s about as far as you can go.

Why trading Rowand doesn't really help in the long term

Other than the fact that we would be selling really, really low on an OK player.

We are only really dumping the diff between Rowand’s and Winn’s salaries THIS year ($4M?). Because we still need a CF in 2010-11. So we have to go into the FA market again.

Maybe we will have something homegrown by 2012.

I would tend to agree with you

I realize Rowand is overpaid, but our minor league teams are not spilling forth with outfield goodness. To replace Rowand’s production with a similar player via the FA market would probably require a similar amount of money (albeit maybe not as long a contract), so I would rather wait and see if Rowand can improve and not dump his salary when his value is so low.

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.

by UnleashTheGore on Dec 9, 2008 9:46 AM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

hmmmm

If Rowand is moved the Giants would not be "burned" by Winn accepting arbitration next year. Or the Giants could even just extend Winn a season.

To me this also assumes Copeland couldn’t be passable with a glove in CF or Timpner is gone.

In general I agree with your points though. If Rowand is not moved by opening day he become too valuable as a pivot as the Giants try Nate and hope for some OF guys to earn their way out of Conn & Fresno. And the Giants can’t afford to just leave him on a door step with out something significant entering the system.

I’m to the point where my first choice is now Burrell at 1B for two years, Big Unit for 1 year and it’s ok if we keep everyone on the roster. (I’d hang onto Winn until the trade deadline and hope Lowry has a strong spring and see if I couldd get anything for him.)

The plan would be low risk and the resulting team would compete in the weak NL west (I don’t see the Dodgers signing CC, Manny and Furcal) and not screw with the long-term plans.

I still think Rowand will bounce back to normal, and that Pablo/Ish/Phelps/Burriss/Renteria/Frandsen will be much better than Castle/Vizquel/Bocock/Velez/Bowker/Aurilia. If Freddie, Winn, & Molina can hit about the same as last year, this team will be in pretty decent shape, assuming the injury bug doesn’t hit.

2. CC is giving the Giants a significant home-town discount; and/or
3. the deal is heavily backloaded; and/or
4. The Brass learned nothing from the Zito signing.

it’s just so easy to get greedy looking at the rotation and thinking “my god, there are so many better in-house options than Zito”
but ultimately, i do wish Barry future success…i’m just tempering my expectations.

Ken Rosenthal blogging:

With the Boston Red Sox expected to trade Mike Lowell if they sign first baseman Mark Teixeira (Kevin Youkilis would move from first to third), the San Francisco Giants have emerged as an option, since they need a third baseman. Lowell is coming off hip surgery, so teams might want to see him play in spring training before acquiring him. The Giants tentatively plan to play Pablo Sandoval at third, but they have been linked to a variety of third basemen. —Ed Price
