First Base Trades?
It seems like the Giants are looking to make a trade for a bat rather than go to the FA market for one. To be fair, other than Burrell or Dunn, there isnt much out there. I posted earlier on the possibility of a trade for a 3rd baseman. This is somewhat based on my feeling (and I admit its just a feeling) that Pablo should start at first -- not to mention the fact that the Giants seem, based on every rumor, to be looking for one.
But, I am willing to conceed to what appears to be a majority opinion that Pablito can and should start at 3rd. So if convincing Dunn or Burrel to play 1st may not happen, which 1st baseman could the Giants trade for and what would it take?

I hear Milwaukee has this rather good first baseman named Prince Fielder.
I wonder if they might take Matt Cain for him.

I don't know about that
Cain’s probably a 3rd starter at best…

NO
Matt Cain is better than Prince Fielder, and the difference is not even close. With Cain gone we’d have to sign CC, which would get expensive real fast with Prince being expensive really fast as well.

I’m sorry you don’t want to improve the team! We need offense a lot, look at how many runs we score. NONE! And Matt Cain sucks anyway, he’s a losing pitcher.

Matt Cain was 8-14. Prince Fielder has 102 RBIs. That proves what a great trade this would be, a losing pitcher for a 100 RBI guy!

More serious response
-Ryan Howard could be avaliable, but not worth the cost.
-Thome and Konerko could be had for virtually nothing, but make too much to be worth it
-Derek Lee could be traded, but has plenty of question marks himself
-Adam LaRoche and Lyle Overbay seem continually on the trade market…and no one cares
Most intriguing option: Kyle Blanks…Padres farm system. If the Padres view Adrian Gonzalez as their 1B of the future Blanks will become a valuable trade piece. Problem is we’d need to give up a lot. The asking price would probably be Tim Alderson…which would be tough to stomach for many.
If it was Sanchez I’d do it immediately, but realistically I think Alderson would be the price. Blanks would be a beast though…

The Anti-Rowand Bandwagon
…I just don’t get it.
Now that I’ve said that, I’m sure the thread will be flooded about how terrible he is and how the entire future of the Giants has been sunk with his horrible contract, and how he hits like Eugenio Velez, and fields like Eugenio Velez and runs like…well…Bengie.
In fact, I think Rowand is probably better than “pretty OK.” I think the comment “I would do it just to be rid of Rowand” is just going too far. I mean…he ain’t Zito.

So..
Alderson is more valuable than Sanchez? Boy, I’d put it the other way around. Sanchez has experience at the major league level, and at least has success as a reliever and has been inunnonconsistent as a starter. Alderson had a great year in A+ but he’s still a 19 year old in the low minors.

If Alderson was on another team and we could get him for Sanchez, would i take the trade? The answer is yes.
The question works vice versa too.
Alderson to me is a much more valuable than Sanchez
by NeifiChicken on Dec 8, 2008 4:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I dunno..
Alderson is still unknown. Sanchez can range anywhere from an average reliever at his low point to a #2-3 starter at his high point.
Alderson could probably range anywhere in that as well, with the closer aspect thrown in as most teams don’t use a lefty as their closer. But Sanchez is alraedy here and proven that he’s at least the average reliever. Alderson has some good scouting reports and good minor league stats, but again he’s only 19 years old. Who knows what could happen.

Blanks
Just looked up his AA numbers and ya, I can see why you are intrigued. I started this post because I found myself pokin around the Royals site. Dont know what they need as far as a trade (I guess everyone needs pitching) but I am intrigued by Ryan Sheely or Billy Ray Butler. Sheely hasnt played much so its hard to get a good sense of his potential, but, with the Royals trading for Mike Jocobs (I would have liked that trade with the Marlins over this Cantu nonsense) it seems Butler may find his ABs drastically cut. Havnt followed him much, thoughts?

The only way I’d ever trade for a Billy Ray is if he’s playing football. Billy Ray is not a baseball name, no matter how good his minor league stats. Billy Rays only play along the offensive line. This is a true fact. I don’t work with any Billy Rays, YOU don’t work with any Billy Rays, there are no Billy Rays in the Baseball Hall Of Fame (don’t look this up, just assume it’s probably true)… The only First Name Rays you know are in Not Another Teen Movie, Varsity Blues, the Footbal Hall of Fame (don’t look this up either, just know it’s true), other football related things, and the deep south, where they groom people to become offensive linemen for their local high school football teams.
Do not want Billy Ray on the Giants. Unless it’s the New York Giants.

Actually, if you are looking for a Burrell / Dunn type bat
there’s a whole lot of that type of player, good hitter, poor defender in a corner spot, available this offeseason:
among the FAs, Burrell, Dunn, Ibanez, Abreu.
And the WS are apparently shopping Jermaine Dye.
All of them are very similar players, offensively and defensively.

my dream scenario for the offseason
make a trade for a young stud 3B; Sanchez, Winn, and Burris for Brandon Wood
trade Molina for something of value, have Pablo Sandoval catch
sign Randy Johnson for 1 year $10 million
sign a decently productive veteran 1B for a one year deal (make sure he is also a “good clubhouse presence” so they can be sure he is teaching the young players “to play the game the right way”) my choice would be Kevin Millar

I will admit I dont know much about Brandon Wood other than his stats from last year, so, what is the potential you see in a player that went .200/.274/.327 in his 55 games last year? What do you see in him that would justify trading all those players? I am not flaming you here, I am genuinely interested in what you see? Otherwise, I am not sure about Millar, if you sign a 3B then play pablito at 1st. As for Johnson, I like this idea.
