Around SBN: Bracketology 2012: Duke Finally Steps Up To The No. 1 Line

Hot Corner Hot Stove

An article on the giants site this morning  the Great Goateed One had this to say:

"I don't see us acquiring an outfielder"

Assuming this isn't off-season misdirection,  then a 3B bat seems to be the focus.

Given the relative glut of 3B talent on the FA market  a trade is the only possibility for the Giants to bring on a third baseman with some power.  Now, I know, some of you will say, "Play Pablito at 3rd and sign/trade for a 1B." For the sake of this Fanpost, lets assume that Sandoval is a better defensive choice as our starting 1st baseman. So the questions, and poll, is:

What 3B  player  would you trade for? What kind of relistic trade would you accept/propose? Why would this be the best for the team?

Just checkin Beltre's stats

What a monster year he had in 2004!! WOW
.334/.388./629

2009 is another contract year for him (something to think about)

He does have a limited no trade clause in his contact (8 teams), I wonder if the giants are one of the teams.

"Sign Case Blake trade for something else or not at all"

WTF mate? Why not just put one choice that says “Do something or nothing at all”

The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

I have been flamed...

for this allready, but I like Casey Blake. Yeah yeah hes old, and he does strike out more than I like, but as a 3rd base option on the FA market, if a trade is unlikely, I dont think it would be a terrible signing. I think hes a good clubhouse player that can contribute and his defense, while not steller, isnt terrible either. I am not saying the Giants should sign him. I think they should arrange a trade, but, if he ends up being our 3B option, it would still be an upgrade over that position from last year.

by uber on Dec 8, 2008 12:12 PM PST up reply actions

i think he was more referring to you combining the three options of signing casey blake, trading for someone else, or doing nothing at all into one choice (you did the same thing with crede)… it just doesn’t make for the best poll results is all because there’s no way of knowing how many people voting for crede actually want him and how many are voting for one of those other options.

by Giant Voodoo on Dec 8, 2008 11:09 AM PST reply actions

Although I don’t really enjoy trafficking in cliches, Zimmerman is very clearly the “face” of a franchise that is struggling to get a toehold in their fanbase (TV numbers in the area were absurdly bad last year, worse than anyone in baseball had ever heard of, less than 1000 viewers in an average game). He’s a local boy, he’s a homegrown boy, and he’s the only player that the casual sports fan in DC could name off that team. He’s not going anywhere.

I wouldn't mind

if this was mostly a salary dump. Like a Dave Roberts and fringe prospect for Tejada deal (swapping bad contractsts). Tejada’s defense would certainly improve with a move to 3B (although by some metrics, he’s a better defender at SS than Renteria).

Obviously we’d be taking on the worse contract here, but Roberts deal is worth about half of what Tejada’s is worth, so Tejada at one year, 6.5 million isn’t really the worst thing.

I would love to have Beltre but at what expense?

Assuming that we do somehow sign Sabathia (20 mil per) and also trade another contract (Winn or Rowand?) and trade for Beltre (Sanchez) the payroll is going to be definately be over 100 million. I dont see it happening.

Sanchez is more valuable...

thab Beltre in the number of years Sanchez is under team control. So Sanchez alone would be too much for Beltre. The only way it makes sense is if the deal includes cash and we can negotiate an extension with Beltre prior to the trade.

I think the Winn + prospect is a pretty good idea. Both Winn and Beltre are in their last year; Winn hits better at Safeco than Beltre, but overall Beltre is more valuable than Winn is.

I like Burrell over Dunn, but why not play him in LF and still trade for a 3B? I like the idea of signing The Big Ugly to a one year deal. If so, trading Sanchez is not a bad idea. I will be suprised if the Giants sign CC. so I have pretty much resigned myself to expect less.

by uber on Dec 8, 2008 12:06 PM PST up reply actions

I have asked this before...

Can Fred Lewis play RF? I honeslty dont know. If a sanchez + winn deal brought beltre could Lewis start in right? I dont want to block Lewis or lose his speed at the top of the order.

Basically, I am not on the “play pablo at 3rd” wagon. Everyone here is complaining about the poor defense of EE and Cantu at the corner, I dont think we’d get much better out of Pablo. Let hinm play 1st and let him play everyday.

The whole point of it will be so Schierholtz can play. It’s not going to be to open a spot for a free agent.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."

by WalrusMan on Dec 8, 2008 2:10 PM PST up reply actions

I think the thought was

If you could sign Pat Burrell, let him play LF which is all hes played for the last 7 seasons. If Winn could be used in a trade to get Beltre, then the question was, could you play Lewis in Right? You could platoon Lewis and Schierholtz possibly.
So the team would be:
C: Molina
1B: Sandoval
2B: Fransden/Burress
SS: Renteria
3B: Beltre
LF: Burrell
CF: Rowand
RF: Lewis

by uber on Dec 8, 2008 2:16 PM PST up reply actions

Sure maybe someone’s thought was. But it makes no sense when you’ve already got Lewis, Rowand, and Schierholtz in the long term plans for the team and Winn here for next year. Winn was due to be your “4th OF” meaning playing every position when other players get off days.

How do you propose to platoon Lewis and Schierholtz, seeing as their both lefties?

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."

by WalrusMan on Dec 8, 2008 2:18 PM PST up reply actions

Again, this is all based on two things:
1. Trading Winn + for Beltre
2. Signing Burrell to play Left

Understanding that Burrell in Left and not at First blocked Lewis, the question was “could Lewis play right?” I dont know if he can or ever has, but it was worth asking. Lyle mentioned Scheirholtz would be upset by this, to which I responded, given the current outfield situation, playing Burrell in Left and Lewis in right really doesnt change the playing time situation for Schierholtz at all. Shit, if we could get rid of Robers then you could have Scheirholtz as the 4th OF option.

by uber on Dec 8, 2008 2:34 PM PST up reply actions

Actually it does change Schierholtz' playing time.

If Winn goes away and Burrell is signed then you only have playing time for Schierholtz in right replacing Lewis or Lewis moving to LF and Schierholtz playing in right. With Winn, he moves around to give people days off. If Rowand needs a few days off, then Winn will play in CF with Schierholtz in RF. If Lewis needs a few days off, then Winn will play in LF with Schierholtz in RF.

Lewis is not good enough in CF to do this with him, so Schierholtz’ playing time is reduced by a third.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."

by WalrusMan on Dec 8, 2008 3:06 PM PST up reply actions

And, I would add,

…the point of trading Winn would be to create a spot for Schierholtz. The point of trading Rowand would be to….er….get rid of Rowand and his contract, as well as create a spot for Schierholtz.

I could see signing Burrell, but we need him more for 1B than LF.

Ideally, we’d trade Molina to open up C for Sandoval, and trade Rowand to trade Rowand, shift Winn to CF, and get Nate into RF. Ah, but what do we do in CF after 2009, assuming we don’t re-sign Randy? Well, we could look for a cheap FA CF (if such a thing exists), or we might be more willing to try Lewis in CF after another year of seeing him improve(?) defensively, or we might give Ben Copeland a shot.

Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005.

by Lyle on Dec 8, 2008 5:06 PM PST up reply actions

I suppose.

I think he’s played mostly the corners. Looks like mostly left through the majors and minors, but he’s played some right. I think RF might be a great position for him. He doesn’t seem to have a very powerful arm, but it’s very accurate making up for a lot of it. He’s got great speed to be able to cover the corner and RC field at AT&T. I’d like this situation.

As far as trades go, Beltre seems to me the best choice of the lot. Burrell and Dunn are FAs and my choice would be Burrell over Dunn if we were to sign a FA. I suppose that if we signed either to play first and put Pablo at 3rd it woudlnt be the end of the world, I just see 1st a better fit for Pablo and a postion where he would see way more success.

I don't know why

you would prefer Burrell over Pablo at 1B. Burrell is also right-handed (though he is taller), and has not shown that he can play 1B. Pablo strikes me as much more athletic than Burrell, and has actually played 1B. He is certainly not ideal, but we are assuming a lot when we propose Burrell at 1B.

Like I stated above, Pablo is nowhere near ideal for 1B, but one thing the Giants absolutely have to do is get his bat into the line-up on a regular basis. If it requires he play 1B to get him ABs, I am fine with that.

beltre or bust

what we are after is a year or maybe 2 of somebody to make the middle of the lineup more fearsome/productive. I have also been proposing Winn + pitching prospect or 2, since Mariners badly need outfielders and pitchers, and they have young Tuiasosopo arriving to play third.
Problem is, Ms realize Beltre is a power hitter and will hold out for decent return. I hope we have offered, say, Winn, Joe Martinez, and Hinshaw. Somethin like that.
Tejada’s power and BA have been dropping for several years. Can’t offer much more than Roberts for him.

This is unanswerable as posed. All of those guys would be OK, although moving Sandoval to 1B is really, really, criminally stupid. They are all variously flawed, so it would depend on what you would have to give up for them, how long they are signed, etc. The only one who can play D is Beltre, and he is not a great hitter. I like Blalock, but he hasn’t played a full season in 2 years.

So, I would take any of the above that I could trade Molina for!

  • Since the cover is a ticket mockup, I’m guessing these

    Actually it would

Since OPS+ doesn’t adjust for handedness. AT&T is easier on RHH than it is on LHH, and Safeco is harder on LHH than it is on RHH – so, for a RHH, a move from Safeco to AT&T should go better than you’d expect from his park adjusted numbers.

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

No I didn’t. Point A is that AT&T favors RHH. Point B is that Safeco favors LHH. Point C, therefore, is that a move from Safeco to AT&T would help Beltre more than you’d expect from his park adjusted numbers.

    moving Sandoval to 1B

I am not really sure where this idea that he would be moving his postion comes from. He played most of his ML games at that position last year. Its also where he is listed as playing in the Winter league.

I suppose if you are thinking trade Molina then, yes, having Pablo play 1st instead of C wouldn’t make a lot of sense. I dont think the issue is choosing between Beltre and Sandoval, but would it make more sense to play Pablo every day at 1st and Beltre at 3rd. So you get a better avg hitter at one corner and, to be fair, a better production production at 3rd. At what point is this actually criminally stupid?

by uber on Dec 8, 2008 1:21 PM PST reply actions

Do ML teams have a say in where a player plays in Winter League?

If so then I’d say the Giants plan this offseason is to acquire a 3B. If they weren’t actively looking into that they would have him playing 3B in the league trying to work on his defense there.

    ah

I know you dont like Casey Blake, we’ve been through this on another post. Doesnt look like it matters, he is probably going to be a Dodger for the next 3 years — so in a way, signing Casey Blake to play 3rd should make you extremely happy. You should be all for Casey Blake playing 3rd base — as long as its for the Dodgers. Everytime he goes 1-4, 0 RBIs, 0Runs, and 1E against us, you can flame me. And everytime he doubles to drive in that 1 run we cant seem to get…..

Well, I’m not really the vindicative sort. But I do love that the Dodgers signed Blake. Three years for a averagish player on the wrong side of 35 is not going to work out well for them.

BTW, it’s not that I think Blake is awful, I just knew that some team was going to give him money and years worthy of a starting 3B, and I was hoping it wouldn’t be us.

    Pablo Sandoval

If Pablo goes to first base there is a good chance he is moved in three years to make way for Angel Villalona.

If he goes to catcher he is moved in 2 – 3 years to make room for Buster Posey. Remember the Giants drafted Posey to be their catcher of the future before Pablo made his mark late in the 2008 season. I still think the Giants plan is Buster at catcher. I am also afraid the nicks and dings that every catcher gets throughout the season could hamper a guy who looks to be a real possbility to help fill the biggest hole in the organization…..someone that can hit and hit in the clutch.

I say third base for Pablo. There is no can’t miss prospect (Conor Gillespie?) coming up through the Giants minor league system. I know he’s built like Kung Fu Panda but watching him move around the diamond last year…I saw a guy that is very coordinated.
Just needs to watch his weight to stay agile.

    Pablo made his mark..

At the end of last season and the beginning of this season. Sure he was in A, but this year he started in A just to work with Decker at C. Then he moved to AA halfway through the season and was called up when he continued hitting.

Sure he was only brought up late in 2008, but he was in the plans last year as well.

And as for 3B, Conor Gillaspie is about as close as you’ll get to a can’t miss prospect, albeit a very low ceilinged one at that it seems.

I don't see Beltre at a workable price happening. So here is what I propose if we must bring in an outsider.

Put out a 1 year contract roughly totaling 4-5m with about half of it as a signing bonus. I would offer it to Uribe and Crede. Telling each party that another vet has been offered the contract and the offer goes for only one. The signing bonus would be attractive to a player encase of tax code changes in the new year. The bonus would also make a mid season trade much easier should the player prove repetitive.

    The pros to Crede :
he can play some very good D when on the field.
Can’t be counted on to play 1k innings so should be plenty of MLB play time for Pablo

    cons:
can really be counted on to play 1 position competently
    don’t sneeze near him. Seriously.

    The pros for Uribe:
Plays 2nd, 3rd & SS and is not bad with a glove. Chrone does not have him listed at as a negative in any of those 3 spots.
Having played 1300+ innings in ’07 & 800 innings last year could be counted on to adsorb a lot of play time if things go badly enough with enough of our non 1st base experiments.
Would allow the team the luxury of Burriss getting the starting job in Fresno so he could possibly improve his bat and become more constant with his glove.

    Cons:
    his bat is …hmmm.. forgettable.
Can Rock Head be stopped from starting him more then 2-3 days a week?

a true double edge sword. Yet the Giants could make it work for them. And the contract cold work for him as well.

Too be honest I am not fired up about either option yet i might slightly lean towards Uribe because he should provide a defensive floor for the arms.

    I am pro-Crede as well

as I said in another thread: It looks like the Dodgers signed Casey Blake for 3 years $17.1 million. I know that you can’t discern the entire market from one contract (like last year when my friend tried to tell me the Rowand signing was good because he is better than Gary Matthews Jr.) but if Blake is worth 3/$17.1 could Crede really be worth more than like 1/$4.5 or 2/$8?

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 9, 2008 12:44 PM PST up reply actions

I don’t think I qualify a pro Crede or Uribe as much as they look to be the lesser Black Hole of Massive Suckiness.

If something reasonable for Beltre was possible he would be first choice. Then Raptor man. Then a few empty spots before these 2. If we could trust Rock Head I am interested in an Uribe or Cora type for cheap that would be able to cover non first base positions encase of injuries, send downs etc. Especially because would ensure Burriss get every play time as opposed to bench rot encase Renteria crashes or Frandsen needs to me moved to cover another disaster.

well, I would rather have Mike Schmidt in his prime, but given the range of available options, I think Crede is the best fit. I would like to have Uribe too, he could backup of all the infield positions reasonably, isn’t a bad hitter for a backup IF type and could be had very cheaply

by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 9, 2008 2:00 PM PST up reply actions

Yes a young mike Schmidt and a side of pie please!

In an ideal world both players would make scene. But with Rock Head we would have starting line up of Uribe, Renteria & Crede tell 2 of them broke down enough to be forced on the DL ( probably some time in July after sitting hurt on the bench for a couple week in June). It’s sad but his track record speaks for itself. Not mention the possible havoc it could wreck on the 40 man. So 1 of them and short term care taker for the #5 of the rotation please.
