I wouldn't mind Blalock as a one year stop gap...but think that we need to give Pablo a shot at the starting job this spring...anyone know what kind of prospects the Rangers may include to sweeten up that deal?

You are a gentleman and a scholar
Thank you sir.
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

Hank the Tank!
I was thinking about this guy the other day. Blalock being a CA kid from the San Diego area would be a nice fit. Being a lefty hitter with signs of some decent pop would be welcomed at third base. The part that scares me however is the fact that he has only played 123 games the past 2 years due to injuries. between 03 -06 he had very impressive numbers.

I might do a Blalock, Diamond and Hunter / N. Ramirez for Sanchez
Man do they have a lot of catching talent on that club.

It mentions how Texas is interested in Cain (shocker), but how theyll focus on Sanchez, but how "Blalock still doesn’t seem like enough " for him.
I think I remember us trading for Blalock being discussed in here a while back. A lefty power hitting third basemen sounds great, but besides how injury prone he is, some of his hitting stats away from Arlington were pretty revealing of how he would do in AT&T.
Does anybody have those stats?

Couple other tidbits from MLBTR
"The Rockies prefer to keep Garrett Atkins, but the Twins, Dodgers, Giants, and Phillies are all interested. Chase Utley has been a long-time supporter of bringing his former UCLA teammate to the Phils for a reunion.
The Marlins are getting several inquiries on Jorge Cantu and Dan Uggla. They don’t plan to trade either, though if the Giants were to offer Jonathan Sanchez for Cantu, the Marlins would jump at the chance."
Would mind getting Atkins if the price is right, but I still think Pablo is the way to go.
As for Cantu? No can do.

he’s had a lot of shoulder problems that limits his ability to throw. That’s why the Rangers made him a DH/1B after he came back last year and moved Chris Davis to 3b, where’s not that great a fielder either.

the rangers are exactly the kind of team we should be looking to deal our pitching to, if we decide to do that, because they’ve got a great farm system and seem to really lack arms. So if we were going to trade sanchez, I’d almost rather we just did it for a package of prospects rather than blalock+prospect.

1 year of Blalock
He’s a free agent after 2009. Why trade a good young pitcher for 1 year of an injury prone 1b/DH? It just isn’t they type of deal that will help this team rebuild for the future. Sanchez for some 2 minor league hitters would be ideal.

Blalock makes 6.5 million dollars. You’re doing the Rangers a favor if you trade for him. Therefore, if you want him you give up nothing for him in terms of talent. There is no way you trade Jonathan Sanchez for Blalock. I’d give them Matt Palmer and Ivan Ochoa.

The Rangers are basically looking this week
for other teams to help them take Blalock’s salary off their hands, plain and simple. They have no intention of listening to offers for Davis unless Sabean pushes away from the bong long enough to mumble “Cain”.
The Rangers want ML-ready pitching, but I sure as hell am not interested in giving them Sanchez for a salary dump. Plus, wouldn’t Blalock get eaten alive at Mays Field? If they’d accept Joe Martinez, then maybe, but Martinez could also be a #5 tryout for us this year as well. I’d rather hold Sanchez to see if we could put a package together to get Beltre. But aside from that, I’m not really interested in sending him away for one-year rentals or other teams’ defensive liabilities (Cantu or E5).

caincecum...
I’m iffy on this deal for a variety of reasons. A Blalock has been injured off and on the past two seasons and is well known for his terrible home/road splits. Last year he had a .343 avg and a 1.025 ops at home and hit .249 with a .720 ops on the road. While it’s fairly common to perform better at home, it’s uncommon to see splits such as Blalock’s. Also remember The Ballpark in Arlington is the American Leagues version of Coors Field. So there would be an expected drop-off anyway. At the same token I think it would be very optimistic to even expect Blalock to put up a .300/.350/470 line at home which would be a .820 ops. Which would still be about 200 points below his ops last year. If the other piece we got was a young Rangers pitcher like Neil Ramirez or Micheal Main I would warm up to the deal but it’s unlikely the Rangers would sense the Sanchez and Blalock’s values aren’t that far apart. What are your thoughts?

Sanchez for Blalock is a bad move.
We don’t need another lefthanded bat in this park, especially one that hasn’t logged a full season recently. He probably doesn’t have the arm for 3B anymore anyway, and one season of him to play 1B isn’t worth Sanchez’s upside.
Garret Atkins can’t hit away from Denver, and Cantu is a butcher in the field who also isn’t worth Sanchez. E5 is sliding downhill defensively himself, so unless you find a way to snag Beltre or even Josh Fields from the White Sox, giving up Sanchez is too steep.
And before anyone thinks about sending Cain away for Davis, does anyone know if Davis is good defensively?

Blalock has always been a terrible hitter outside of Arlington. We don’t want him, even if we don’t give up much in return.

just sounds too close to a combination of Neifi Perez and Pedro Feliz…and i don’t care what his numbers are, i want no part of that.

Davis
Has been declared untouchable earlier this offseason like Cain was. I’m pretty sure it would take Cain+ to get him, he’s very highly valued by Texas (as he rightfully should be, a 22 year old putting up those numbers in the minors and holding his own in the majors like he did last year is something I’d put a pretty high value on). It would be nice to have Chris Davis, but we’d pay a king’s ransom

Blalock falls directly in the “i’ll take a gamble on him if he’s free but i certainly wouldn’t give up anything to get him” category.
With regards to Chris Davis i’m not sure i really see a fit. I don’t think Texas would trade him unless they got Cain back as Sanchez wouldn’t be enough, and their farm is absolutely loaded, so i wouldn’t think they’d be interested in trading him for prospects. I wouldn’t trade Cain for just him, and i’m not sure they’d throw in much value on top of it. If they were to add some good prospect as well, then it’d be more interesting.
