Yep.
He’ll be in AAA next season and if we don’t sign a 5th starter he’ll probably be in contention for the 5th starter spot with Pucetas and Lowry if he’s still got his arm on.

I forgot to put this on the other prospect threads
but as of like a week ago (I don’t know when the league ends) but Crawford said he was hitting around 400 with 7 homers in the Dominican league. I don’t know how strong that league is, but if he can put together some offense, his defense is already solid, and I would expect him to move up on everybody’s list.
proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..
If Crawford is in the DWL...
…I’ve totally missed him.
Are you sure he’s not doing that in the Instructional League?

He was at the beginning..
but then he went to the Dominican and he said he did well.

Random Q..
If someone would have told you 2 years ago that at the end of 2008, Angel will drop to our 4th best prospect, would you be excited that we have 3 legit prospects ahead of him or would you be scared that he flamed out already and thus dropped? I’m thinking with the way our farm system was 2 years ago, that I would be scared he flamed out.
proud father of the newly acquired Brandon Crawford..
except if he “flamed out” he probably wouldn’t be that high

well, two years ago a one legged busboy could be #4 on our list
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

I went with Aaron King, but where are Mike McBryde, Jose Casilla and Thomas Neal? I’d put them ahead of at least the relievers on the list.
ADD NEAL
A glaring omission!

I like what the A’s board did with listing all the possibilities. This would stop this list from being fixed and WOULD include Thomas Neal

I’m not sure where Neal went….McBryde is on the testers for recieving one of the lowest vote totals last round. Neal will be rotated in next week as well.

I voted Tanner but I feel like he should be getting more votes
hes the most likely of anyone to become a major leaguer
I voted Tanner over him on account of him being a starter vs. a reliever
waiting for 2011....
kind of ditto...
i voted for him last time, but he got no love whatsoever. switched to martinez for this round of voting. I don’t know if he’ll ever be a star but i think he has very good odds of contributing in a big league bullpen someday.

Just looking back over our prospects list, it doesn’t seem like our system is quite as deep with pitching as everyone makes it out to be. Of the top 15 so far, we have 5 pitchers, but I really only trust 2 of them to be major league caliber (any guesses on who those are?), and one of them a lot of scouts has pegged as a reliever in the majors. Sosa is scaryw ith injuries, Barnes might go the Cowart route (though I have a bit more hope in him), and Pucetas ranks (at least from what I can tell) as a 4th/5th starter. We have some good relief arms, with the likes of Romo, Valdez, Matos, and Hinshaw (and Sadler? we’ll see…) but our starting pitching depth is fairly weak at this point. Which is why I guess I voted for Tanner… I just want to believe!

It’s really not that deep in pitching anymore, no.

speaking of deep
I’ve been looking over at Athletic Nation’s similar community prospect list and noticed two things.
1. They’re more fast-paced than we are. I like our pace better.
2. Their system looks is deeper than ours, though our respective 1-7/1-8 are pretty close to even.
Fortunately, the Giants are in the NL West.

- I agree.
- Their system is fucking ridiculous. Their #12 prospect is Jemile Weeks, their first draft pick in 2008. Ridiculous. They are set up for a 5 year run of 90+ win seasons.

They're set up for a 5 year run all the time..
And yet they never make it past the first round..

That’s cause Billy’s shit doesn’t work in the playoffs.

Well, you can’t trade all your good players in the playoffs…

In the 09 draft,
Instead of going looking for position players, we should draft the best available player…in every round.
sounds good in theory
but I doubt we’ll spend enough to get close to doing that

Honestly
That should be the strategy every draft.

That's kinda what they do every year
Remember the outrage here when they selected Bumgarner and bypassed Jason Heyward, a reputed Willie McCovey doppelganger? People were flinging themselves down a flight of stairs and stuff.
If you look at the Baseball America Top 200 list from just before the draft and see where theoretically the Giants SHOULD have selected their draft selection, in an overall draft pick sense, the Giants regularly select players, both pitchers and position players, before where BA had them ranked, sometimes more than one round (that is, 30 picks) before BA had the player ranked. That is a sign that they select players because they think they are the best available.
And really, that’s all you can do, devise your system and trust its judgment on prospects and select the best available, because after the first 5-10 picks, it is mostly a crapshoot anyway, the odds of finding a good player shrinks down greatly, to about 10% by the end of the first round, to below 5% once you get past the 2nd-3rd rounds.

Let’s not forget that Heyward would still have been a very good pick there and would, were he in our system, be filling a few empty holes for us. We have very very little power potential in our prospects and virtually no decent OF prospect at any level.
Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!
Just saying .....
EME is powering up in the winter league. In 80 PAs he has 4 HRs and 8 DBLs for a tidy SLG% of .639. His numbers are among the top 3 league leaders. Keep hacking, brother and you and fellow FSU standout Posey just may see The City.
I was hoping for this
He was hitting pretty well this season, just with no power, even on the road in AA, so I was hoping that he was just recovering from his shoulder surgery still and perhaps was still weak.
That is a huge improvement over his 2008 season, where he showed almost no power to speak of at any point in the season, except for a brief period in July. Meanwhile, despite not having much power, he was still able to rack up more walks than strikeouts every month except August, when it was equal. And the strikeout rate was low as well, around 10% or 90% contact rate. Only the best hitters around can strikeout about 10% of the time plus walk more than strike out. I hope he gets to advance to AAA so we can see what he can really do in a better park and healthy for once.
And just in time, I think he reaches his 6th season with us in 2009, don’t they become free agents after their 6th season?

I’m pretty concerned with Gillaspie. The guy had his agent write a clause in his contract to ensure he got called up in ’08. What kind of self entitled premadonna is he?

Gillaspies contract
I don’t believe it was written into the contract. I think it was more of a handshake agreement. I never read or heard that the Giants admitted doing it.

I like it. It’s like B.C., only it starts about 16 years earlier.

Didn’t Baggs coin the phrase “Cocky McCockerson” or something similar when writing about the arrogance of Gillaspie?
Yeah, I think it referred to an undisclosed rookie mistake he made. Apparently the vets alerted him to the situation and it was left to die. Probably happens to most rooks, but this may have been amplified by his fast-tracking agreement.
I dont think it was a blanket statement about Dizzy’s attitude.
