McCovey Chronicles Community Prospect List #15

Even more options, sorry if you think it's too many.  Feel free to make a write in as your vote.  Just list who you want, don't vote in the poll, and then try and make a case to sway people.  This poll will last until Saturday at 5 PM.

1. SP Madison Bumgarner
2. C Buster Posey
3. SP Tim Alderson
4. 1B Angel Villalona

5. 2B Nick Noonan
6. 3B Conor Gillaspie

7. SP Henry Sosa
8. OF Rafael Rodriguez
9. OF Roger Kieschnick
10. SP Kevin Pucetas
11. Travis Ishikawa
12. Wendell Fairley
13. Scott Barnes
14. Brandon Crawford

Please note, it's getting a little tricky to find info on some guys.  If people can fill in scouting blanks, with backed up evidence (preferably not just "I heard"), I will try to add the info in.

Ehire Adrianza, SS, 19 - Hit .241/.351/.325 in 2007 over 249 AB in the DSL with 41 BB and 37 K.  Hit .288/.382/.409 in 2008 over 66 AB, mostly in Rookie Ball with 9 BB and 6 K.  He is an excellent defensive SS and scouts love him.

Ben Copeland, OF, 25 - Drafted in 2005, #132 overall.  Minor league stats here, year and level summary here. He has good plate discipline but currently profiles as a tweener if his power doesn't develop.

Matt Downs, UT, 24 - Drafted 2006, #1076 overall.  Minor league stats here.  In 2008, over 523 AB mostly at High-A, hit .294/.347/.480 with 20 HR, 38 BB, and 67 K.  He has played defensively at 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, and OF.  He also pitched in college, so if he can figure out how to catch a little, we may have our very own Jose Oquendo.

Jesse English, LHP, 24 - Drafted in 2002, #187 overall.  Over 5 minor league seasons has pitched 265.1 innings with 208 H, 331 K, 117 BB, 20 HR, 1.23 WHIP, and a 3.26 ERA.  In 2008, in High-A, he pitched 135.1 innings, with 135 K, 51 BB, 12 HR, 1.27 WHIP, 3.19 ERA, and a 46% groundball rate.  He career was derailed early on by injuries but is back on track now.  He throws a good fastball, plus changeup, and probably something else that I couldn't find.

Jesus Guzman, 3B/2B?, 24 - Signed as a minor league free agent.  Minor league stats here.  In 2008, over 415 AB mostly at AA, hit .349/404/.545 with 17 HR, 37 BB, and 70 K.  In the VWL hit .378/.467/.657 over 143 AB with 8 HR, 22 BB, and 22 K.  His fielding is poor but he's obviously got a good idea what to do at the plate.

Justin Hedrick, RHP, 26 - Drafted 2004, #190 overall.  College and minor league stats here.  In 2008, at AA, threw 65.2 innings with 74 K, 21 BB, 4 HR, 0.94 WHIP, 1.37 ERA, and a 30% groundball rate.  He throws a high 80's, low 90's fastball and a slider.

Aaron King, LHP, 19 - Drafted in 2008, #207 overall.  In 2008, pitched 33.1 innings between Rookie Ball and Low-A with 45 K, 19 BB, 1 HR, 1.33 WHIP, 2.99 ERA, and a ~49% groundball rate.  He throws a low 90's fastball that can touch mid 90's, a curve, and a rough change.

Joseph Martinez, SP, 25 - Drafted 2005, #372 overall.  Has thrown 547.2 innings in his 4 years of pro ball with an ERA of 3.40 and 1.17 WHIP.  Last season in AA he threw 148 innings with 131 H, 6 HR 37 BB 112 K for an ERA of 2.49 and 1.14 WHIP with a 57% groundball rate.  More of a finesse pitcher than anything, but has continued to post good stats as he moves up in levels.

Eddy Martinez-Esteve, "OF", 25 - Drafted in 2004, #70 overall.  Minor league stats here, year and level summary here. He has always had a disciplined approach at the plate and he had very good power before he tore the labrum in his left shoulder in 2006.  Is currently hitting .361/.426/.623 in the PRWL leading to hope that his power is resurfacing.  His defense is charitably compared to Manny Ramirez's.

Michael McBryde, CF, 23 - Drafted 2006, #146 overall.  College and minor league stats here.  In 2008, at High-A, hit .295/.368/.383 over 420 AB with 37 BB, 84 K, and 31 SB.  Has great speed, a great arm, outstanding defense, and shows flashes of power.

Thomas Neal, 1B/OF, 21 - Drafted 2005, #1092 overall as a draft and follow.  Tore the labrum in his left shoulder in 2006.  In 2008, when healthy for a full season, hit .276/.359/.444 a A-Ball over 428 AB with 15 HR, 48 BB, and 103K.  He is a toolsy outfielder with good power, although he does strike out a lot.

Kyle Nicholson, RHP, 23 - Drafted in 2007, #224 overall.  In 2008, in Rookie Ball, threw 62.2 innings with 54 K, 3 BB, 1 HR, 0.59 WHIP, 1.15 ERA, and a 72% groundball rate. He throws a high 80's fastball with a ton of sink, a change, and slider.

Edwin Quirarte, RHP, 22 - Drafted 2008, #147 overall.  College stats here.  In 2008, at Low-A, threw 29.2 innings with 33 K, 9 BB, 0 HR, 1.08 WHIP, 2.12 ERA, and a 49% groundball rate.  He throws a low 90's fastball, slider, and split.

Hector Sanchez, C, 19 - In 2007, in the DSL, hit .286/.401/.471 over 119 AB with 19 BB and 15 K.  In 2008, in the DSL, hit .348/.458/.502 over 207 AB with 36 BB and 29 K. He is a big, strong switch hitting catcher with a strong arm.

Eric Surkamp, LHP, 21 - Drafted in 2008, #177 overall. College stats here.  In 2008 threw 17.1 innings, mostly at Low-A, with 15 K, 5 BB, 1 HR, 1.79 WHIP, 6.43 ERA, and a 50% groundball rate. He throws a high 80's fastball, change, and breaking ball.

Ben Snyder, LHP, 23 - Drafted in 2006, #116 overall.  Over 3 minor league seasons has pitched 364.1 innings with 319 K, 88 BB, 27 HR, 1.18 WHIP, and a 2.89 ERA.  In 2008, split between High-A and AA, he pitched 147.1 innings with 117 K, 41 BB, and 11 HR. He throws a high 80's fastball and an excellent curve.

Clayton Tanner, LHP, 20 - Drafted 2006, #89 overall.  Over three seasons has thrown 278.1 IP, 288 H, 213 K, 91 BB, 7 HR, 1.36 WHIP, 3.62 ERA, and ~56% groundball rate across the three levels of A-ball.  In 2008 threw 117.0 IP, 124 H, 84 K, 39 BB, 1 HR, 1.39 WHIP, 3.69 ERA, and a 55% groundball rate in High-A.  He throws a fastball, breaking ball, and change.

It says I need WMP 11, which I have, and I don’t know if I want to figure it out. Anyways, I think what I wrote is still accurate. He sits in the low 90’s, but can touch mid.

Jesse English

I’m sticking with the once broken prospect, recently protected from Rule 5 draft. He led the promising pack of prospect pitchers in San Jose in strikeouts in 2008. No one else left on the prospect list has ever been “better” than Matt Cain. And, I think we might see him on the fast track this year. With Threets gone, Taschner being Tasch, and Hinshaw potentially going through a “walking” phase, English could get the call up as LOOGY next year, and maybe get the Sanchez treatment. I guess, I think he’ll have a chance to be promoted next season, and a chance to fulfill some promise, and I think he has the stuff to back it up.

On the other hand, players like Downs, Guzman and English has some pretty shiny breakouts in 2008. Jesus Raptor Guzman is even shredding in the VWL. How do you rate “might” against “just did”? (One of the big questions in any prospect ranking.)

EME had a solid season as he regained some of his health. And at AA. Neal also had a nice season after coming off an injury. Neal is the baby in the group and might has the most power.

by wilriv21 on Dec 4, 2008 9:03 PM PST up reply actions

EME will be 25 next year, has played most of his minor league career at the DH spot and hasn’t shown sufficient power yet. Sounds like a low ceiling, he’s off my list.

I feel your pain

Actually, I was thinking the other day that we’re doing this all wrong. We should do some type of individual ranking system, like the MVP or Cy Young voting, where a #1 ranking is worth 20 points, a #2 ranking is worth 19 points, etc, etc, for our Top 20. We tally up the totals, and that’s that. That way, each of us has our particular preference duly noted (and, most likely, overlooked).

And then I also don’t have to keep voting for Matt Downs until he’s finally agreed to somewhere around #22 by the rest of you idiots gentle readers.

Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005.

by Lyle on Dec 5, 2008 6:29 PM PST up reply actions

Well, the example of Matt Downs is probably not going to resolve our woes, since he’d probably be around 22 on my list. I love him, I root him and i think his bat will play in some acceptable form or another in the majors. I just think he’s a case of the organization not pushing him fast enough. He’s always been over-aged at all of his levels. Maybe it’s his glove or the fact that he’s recently converted from pitching, but it keeps him from being higher on my list.

Maybe we should do a non-groupthink 11 through 20 to appease ourselves?

What?

Sabean has always enjoyed versatile players. Would not be surprised that when SF has its meeting before the drafts that there is some discussion that a player also has pitched before in his career.

well you always want to convert position players to pitchers.

Tidrow and Sabean have really only consistently been good at drafting and identifying pitchers in the draft. If they thought a player had a good chance at being a pitcher wouldn’t they have drafted them as a pitcher instead of drafting them as a position player?

Other than Posey do not really know what other players have suggested converting (and after reading different scouting reports on Sandoval have been reconsidering keeping Posey at a catcher). What have been writing is that believe some of these players do not have the talent as a hitter to make the MLs.

Most, if not all, of these players have already played the position I have suggested. Crawford has a questionable bat but has an excellent arm. He also dabbled with pitching at UCLA. When McBryde was drafted the reports said if he cannot hit he could definitely be a pitching prospect. Bocock obviously does not possess the bat to be a MLer.

Posey was an All-American shortstop and the position change to catcher was more about his leadership abilities than any deficiency as a SS. This kid can hit and the catchers that can hit are often moved to another position.

Valuable?

It would help Mike that he could play center field, but I don’t think I’ve recently seen a valuable outfielder with a .700 OPS.

If he’s playing insane defense he could start in the majors with a .700 OPS.

I was really encouraged with the progress Mike made this year, but I have to say I have grave doubts about his ability to survive against major league pitching. I saw a few of his games in the Sally and the thing that stood out about him was he got jammed on every single swing he took. Didn’t really seem to matter what pitch or what location, he couldn’t square up on it. And one game I heard some of the scouts laughing about his bat speed. It certainly wasn’t an encouraging introduction to his game.

That said, he’s got alot of every non-bat tool the game requires (including, I’d say instincts), so he’s easy to root for.

I really believe that a big part of his problem is upper body conditioning Specifically, strength in the arms and wrists. Hopefully he’s in the wait room right now, developing the strength to drive those “would be dribblers”.

You want him him to work on his waiting?

If a centerfielder with a .770 OPS and average defense has value to a team, a centerfielder with a .700 OPS and crazy defense has similar value, if not more.

But, my question is, can McBryde hit the cut-off man?

he can hit the catcher on the fly

by wilriv21 on Dec 6, 2008 12:09 PM PST up reply actions

Ouch..

I wouldn’t want him to do that on every throw. We’d be out of catchers quickly.

But

Is his defense really considered that good, arm strength aside?

Yeah, I think so, or at it has the potential to be.

He’s supposed to have great foot speed and a crazy good throwing arm. Not sure how accurate it is.

I haven't had too many opportunities to see Mike's arm...

…but from what I did see, it is very good, and pretty accurate.

But Nate’s arm is better, particularly in accuracy. I’ve never seen Nate uncork a ball that just went wild. If he’s thrown significantly wild in games I’ve been to, they’ve been cut off before it was noticable.

Yes

Good instincts, good routes, and crazy speed.

According to BA, Timpner is better defensively.
