im noticing a trend
this from sfgiants.com about renteria
"Moreover, according to his agents, he has shed more than 10 pounds this offseason to get himself fit."
i swear that every time i have heard this, or the opposite "adding ten pounds of muscle", the player stinks instead of improving.
somewhere in the back of my head i remember a story that wilson is going to help zito add muscle this offseason...so does that mean he goes from terrible pitcher to some sort of square root of negative one meets a bose-einstein condensate sort of pitcher?
i didnt mean to sound that douchebaggy with a random reference, but i said it and ill stick by it.
so i pose the question(s), how much of a role does shedding or gaing weight in an offseason really have? anyone have any specific examples of players succeeding or failing after such changes?

There was this guy called Larry Bangs or something who gained muscle weight some years back and he did pretty good I think.

let me know the next time there is a free agent whose agent doesn’t tell the media that he has never worked harder in an offseason/has gained 30 pounds of muscle/is in the best shape of his life. You should pay no attention whatsoever to reports of offseason conditioning unless you observe evidence with your own eyes.

i hope he does shed some pounds…he looked kinda frumpy in that Tigers uni
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.

Maybe it was because the Tigers sucked last year.

One thing to consider
Guys start to workout harder once they realize their skills are declining. That they continue to decline despite the new workout doesn’t mean that the new workout is the cause of it.

There's also..
… the possibility that “new found” musculature could affect the mechanics of pitchers, no?

I’m waiting for the agent to say his client will be well-rested after lounging around the house, drinking beer and eating junk food all winter long.

according to his agents, he has shed more than 10 pounds this offseason
I wonder what I would do if I lived in Columbia and needed to shed
a few pounds over the offseason.

I’m thinking probably a rigorous exercise program combined with a sensible diet.

I did think it was interesting that his agent had to remind him last year that it was a contract year and he needs to start playing better…and he did.
His agent needs to tell him this?
I hope his agent told him the deal he just signed with the Giants is a one-year deal so he thinks he’s playing for another contract.
