I don’t think we should sign him for more than 5 years, if it can be helped, but the idea of a secret underground lair beneath the Bell is really freakin’ cool!

I voted 6, 120 but thought the lair was an intriguing idea
I can’t keep up with this rumor mill, where is the off switch? Can’t we save some of this for a slow week? Not complaining, but this hot stove league is really cooking around these parts.
I thought I’d try this out. I’ve never seen the Giants with so many hands in the pot, and I’m getting a lot of traffic from people who want to read what we all think. Put the big things up on the main page a couple of days before the Winter Meetings, and resume normal operations right after — that’s my plan.
If it’s too much, let me know, and I’ll know better for next year.

I took my phd exam the last two days so have been out of the loop, come back here and it’s like FA/rumor explosion! Howry signed! Renteria signed! Cantu playing 3rd and CC has an underground lair at Pac Bell and Burrell plays 3rd 1st OF…wtf is going on here

If Burrell is playing 1st/3rd/OF
I’d figure that with the economy as it is, players are getting laid off too and those that remain are being asked to pick up the slack. Fred Lewis and TI are out of a job, we’re not signing a 3rd baseman, and Patt Burrell is getting signed to play all three positions. We’re now fielding a 7 man team, and the roster will be cut to 15-20 players.

What is the advantage to this? If it’s 120m for 5 years or 120m for 6?
Id rather take the 6 year deal on the chance that he’s still any good in that 6th year. If not, you can just release him and you are no worse off than you were with the 5 year deal.
I fail to see the logic in less years for the same $$ from a teams perspective.
by FairweatherFan on Dec 4, 2008 12:51 PM PST up reply actions
Yeah, I’ve never understood that bias. If you get lucky and he’s still a good pitcher after five years, you come out way ahead with the longer contract for less per year.
you can add an 6th year option to deal with that.

If 5/120 were an option, 6/120 wouldn’t be. It’s more like 5/120 vs. 6/140.

A starting Picher at selling his age 33 (and on) season will probably be a lot more attractive to a Starting pitcher selling his age 34 (and on) season. This is something to think about if said starter has managed to stay in the top 20% of starter his previous 2 seasons (compensated drafted picks) yet does not fit your plans at the end of the contract.
Ivan Ochoa - Heir to the legacy of Rob Andrews & Rikkert Faneyte!
Here comes Captain Obvious wearing his Atomic Wedgie!
The Zito situation dominates my thinking on this. I’d much rather have Zito on a 5 year/$126M deal than 7/$126M deal. It’s just too long to carry a shitty pitcher. we’d only have 3 more years to go. The Giants may be ready to compete in 2012, but will still have to pay Zito $19M (and $20M in 2013) that could be used to add puzzle pieces or two, or re-sign Matt Cain or extend Lincecum.
Now, I don’t think CC will turn into Zito, but he is a lot more injury prone, has been worked hard the last couple of years and is in what appears to be horrendous physical shape. So, the question is “do you want to be stuck with a bad contract for longer or shorter?” I say shorter.
Proud adopted parent of future big league slugger Thomas Neal
by nostocksjustbonds on Dec 4, 2008 2:04 PM PST up reply actions
But financially, that makes no sense
Sign him for a 7 year 126 year deal and if you think he sucks after 5 years, release him.
It costs you the same, you lose nothing.
But if he doesn’t suck, you get 2 more years of his service.
And we wonder why this country is in a financial crisis ;)
by FairweatherFan on Dec 4, 2008 2:25 PM PST up reply actions
my flawless logic
its the difference between paying for a useful player or a non-useful one. It may cost the same dollars-wise over the long run, but why have a salary weighing you down for 2 extra years that could be used for players that will help you win. The point is to pay for the useful years and not beyond.
If Zito’s contract came off the books in 2011, we could sign Matt Cain to an extension, but since there’s a $39M obligation remaining to Zito in 2012 & 2013, so we probably won’t be able to do that. Having saved a few million over the course of the previous 5 years isn’t going to change that situation.
And if Zito were any good, I wouldn’t be making this point, but it’s about limited risk. I’d rather have an expensive pitcher who sucks for 5 years rather than 7. if it costs a few extra million per year, than so be it.

Holy god
that’s a lot of money for 2 pitchers…didn’t we just learn that throwing 2.2 billion at a pitcher isn’t a good idea? Obviously CC is no Zito, but he also threw like 25 CGs and 1000 innings the last 2 years.
Forgive me if I think it’s a bad idea.
The thing is
Sabathia is a lot better than Zito.
I’m not sure it’s a good idea myself, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t tempted.

Still defending Rich Aurilia, and the Niners' classic unis
I would actually argue
That IF the team goes after CC, they had probably better go all in $$ wise after Burrell as well.
Typically with contracts like this you are really buying the first couple of good years and taking a gamble on the rest. With that in mind, you would want those good years to be your best shot at making an impact.
CC + Burrell on this team would make it the instant favorite to win the NL west, and frankly I think that a rotation of Tim, CC, Cain, Sanchez would give you a very reasonable chance in ANY playoff series.
With Winn, Molina, Roberts, etc coming off the books next year and the hope that those current salaried positions could be filled by homegrown replacements (Nate, Pablo, etc) even w/ CC @ ~ 20m + Burrell around 12 the Salary would not be out of line.
Going for CC indicates going all in, and frankly it might not be a bad idea, especially given the somewhat soft market for FA’s this season thusfar.

If we sign CC, does his and Zito’s contracts pretty much rule out keeping Cain beyond his current deal or Lincecum beyond his arb years?

No, I do not think so.
Especially if payroll expands beyond the 90m arbitrary limit many of us have assumed.
GRM actually did a good breakdown of this.
If CC signs here and actually plays well, it will be fine. What we cannot afford is CC to sign and then become an albatross. A team cannot afford two of those.

If CC is hear, Cain is gone. We will get Prince or something like Prince for him.
1 You better get more then Fielder for him. Yes he swings a mean stick but this still an N.L. team. That means no D.H. to hide a1 dimensional player in. And because you can’t hide the flawed dimensions you going to get burned by those lesser dimensions.
2) If your Gm is not named Riccaddi or Sabean finding a productive first base man is not that tough. Even if you Gm is named either of those 2 that is still too high of a premium to pay when you look at position scarcity.
Ivan Ochoa - Heir to the legacy of Rob Andrews & Rikkert Faneyte!
Here comes Captain Obvious wearing his Atomic Wedgie!
Cain becomes a free agent in 2012, meaning we’d have to pay him a FA contract for 2 years that Zito and CC are on the books (Plus some 2 of Timmy’s arb years.) If he’s as good as we all hope and want him to be, he’ll cost over $10M per season.
Lincecum’s arb years are from 2011-2013 (and probably be in the 8 figure range), so he’d become a free agent (assuming we keep him all those years, thru a buy out or arbitration) at the same time as Zito. Obviously, if we could extend Timmy beyond that before that point, it would be better.
We can buy Zito’s 2014 season out for $3,000,000.

Incorrect
Lincecum’s agent recently said that he was amenable to an extension now.
The Cy Young upped the ante on what they can get in arbitration, meaning that an extension, even when saving the team money in the long term, is too much money for the player to turn down in case he should come down with an injury or poor performance.
It will probably be in the $30-40M range, depending on how many years of his free agency he is willing to forgo, based on what Pedroia signed, and what Ryan Howard got in his arbitration hearing. That’s too much money to pass up now and risk injury or otherwise.

Sign the player/family that wants to make a career in The City. Trade for the middle of the order bat needed even though it will cost some young talent.
What would 2011 look like if this deal went sour
we’re looking at the possibility that we might have traded cain as a result, lincecum could be walking and us not having enough money to resign him, and zito and cc as back end starters? that would leave us with madbum and timmmy 2 as our aces in possibly their first years. with all of our supposed future potential thats a big gamble to take. we need to have some flexibility when our “future” arrives

Wow, I fucking love Bobby Howry at 1 year $2.75 million. That’s the minor league contract of major-league contracts, is $2.75 million really that much more than free? For a guy who has been lights out in the past. I wasn’t enthused about him because I thought a three-year contract would be too risky but his career numbers indicate that he is a good bet to be worth a lot more than that deal.
Barry Zito: Mike Hampton with a guitar
Going back to the Burrell Post...
Sandoval Renteria Frandsen and Burrell would make the worst defensive infield of all time? There was this team I saw play one time, I can’t remember which team it was, but they had Jose Castillo, Manny Burriss, Eugenio Velez, and John Bowker all playing infield…

The idea of having C.C in orange and black is great. The reality of it is just awful. Not to say that he’s not worth the money, he’s arguably one of the top 3 pitchers in the MLB at present. But honestly, what would signing C.C do for our team? I honestly don’t think that the Giants are going to field a playoff worthy team for years to come and that when that day comes, it will be because of our developing farm and key signings. With C.C around, we’ll have the best rotation in the league but that also puts Lincecum at #2. Now what kind of message are we gonna send to the kid who just said he’s willing to go “long term?” Lincecum is our future and we should focus on making him the face of the franchise. And again, even if we sign Sabathia, what part of our order is gonna score runs to win games? We’ll pitch our opponents to death only to lose cause of the bullpen and lack of run production. C.C’s a great ballplayer but he’s a wrong fit for the Giants. ESPECIALLY because of the Barry Zito contract.
-D
CC no no
Agreed. Great pitcher, wrong fit. Unless we can talk anyone into taking Barry and part of his contract, we cannot afford a $120M pitcher for 5-6 years. $120M for Texiera — that’s an idea I can live with.
Don't believe everything you think.
Regarding the message to Tim, I think you’ve got it wrong. My guess is he would love a CC signing because:
- Good starters like being on a staff with other good starters. It doesn’t put the weight of the world on one guy’s shoulders and the friendly rivalry can be awesome. (Ask Johnson and Schilling if they liked being on the same staff.)
- Tim’s too much of a competitive stud to be intimidated by anyone’s presence.
- It would demonstrate the team’ commitment to being good.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman to meet with Sabathia on Saturday prior to winter meetings. Wants to kick the tires in person and get a feel for Sabathia and his intentions. Nothing like letting the client know who much you are interested and care.
Sabathia may sign as soon as next week with a team.
Oh , certainmente , Papi.
And it’ll most probably be a team who much are interested and care.
What , were you drunk?
Maybe you’ve been hanging late at night with women of Asian persuasian! lol
Who has the fun?
Is it always the man with the gun?

Apparently, we in the mix
Accoring to John Shea
Speaking of Bay Area pitchers, the Giants remain interested in CC Sabathia and believe they’re his first choice – which could go a long way in maintaining their desire to pursue the Vallejo native, who has a $140 million offer on the table from the Yankees.
The Giants haven’t offered a contract to Sabathia. For now, they’re closely monitoring the Sabathia sweepstakes, exercising patience and possibly preparing to strike later rather than sooner, similar to how they obtained Barry Zito two years ago.

Throw out that kind of money……….??
From what it sounds like, we’re still in the running for Sabathia offering him a little over 100 million. In adidtion, there have been rumors that Pat Burrell wants to come to the Bay Area.
Honestly, I wouldn’t mind having both of these guys, but do you think that the Giants will throw out that kind of cash, esspecially right after signing Renteria.
Gotta love that baseball doesn’t have a salary cap, but how much will be willing to spend?
How about trading for Peavy?
If Sabean thinks Sabathia is too expensive then the Giants should consider Jake Peavy. The cost-cutting Padres are having difficulty finding a trading partner for the former Cy Yound award winner. Peavy is owed “only” $60M over the next four seasons. Padres would be looking for low-cost players in return.
Sabean then can negotiate will any of the FA hitters for the bat the team needs. There might even be an overall cash savings of having Peavy plus FA hitter rather than signing FA Sabathia and trading for the hitter. Who knows maybe even be able to keep the second round pick in the draft.
