Edgar Renteria is a San Francisco Giant
I'm really surprised by the backlash to this one. It's a done deal, and some folks are just freaking out. For a three- or four-year deal? Oh, yeah, storm the administration building and march in the quad. For a two-year deal? Low-risk, medium reward. The concern of the freaker-outers, distilled into one question:
Why come no youth movement?
The freaker-outers are ready to say, yes, those last 150 at-bats from Burriss meant more than the rest of his minor league career. Those 150 at-bats showed that Burriss didn't need AA or AAA; he was ready right away, and he'll be ready next year. I wish I had that kind of faith. But if Burriss flopped at short, the Giants would be screwed for two years. Next year's shortstop market is a mess, and any shortstops on the trade market will either cost some crazy Caingarnerson price, or they'll be unproven, cross-your-finger types, just as Burriss is right now.
It isn't as if the Giants are saying, well, back to Siberia for Burriss, either. There are about three or four hundred at-bats waiting for a guy who can play second and short. Burriss will get his chance, it just won't be at short, for the most part. I would love for him to start in Fresno, actually, but I guess I'm in the minority. And if Burriss does well wherever he plays? The Giants will have a shortstop to trade in next year's market. I don't see the down side. My last Renteria post gave four likely scenarios, and a two-year deal to a former plus player isn't a disaster in any of the scenarios.
There aren't any disastrous scenarios other than two full seasons of lackluster range, booted balls, and weak hitting, that is. But that's a total worst-case scenario, and if it happens, the Giants aren't just going to run Renteria out there every day while Burriss hits .350 in Fresno. Complete asininity on the part of the Giants' manager and front office in the event of an age-related implosion is the only way this deal will turn out to be awful.
Wait a sec.... Lemme go back and rethink this....

I’m down with Burriss at AAA too. He’s a smart kid, knows his fundamentals, but a little more seasoning definitely wouldn’t hurt him.

Meh
I am not a freaker-outer, I just don’t see the point. The Giants are not going to contend in ‘09 (and may only do so in a marginal fashion in ’10), so the need for a mid-30’s SS at this point is a bit of a headscratcher.
Also, if the Giants are serious about Sandoval at 3rd, that side of the infield is likely to be a sieve.

I’m inbetween whatever and love it. Renteria could be a good player; a bit overpayed, and i’ll be bummed if that means we lose out on the Sabathia bidding, but if Renteria plays like he has in the NL before, I’ll be very happy. It’s just that, with our manager, Renteria could decline rapidly with age and still get every at-bat that he would get otherwise, youth be damned.

possible
but it doesn’t matter. The team really needs all of the above, but can probably fake it with only 1 of Texiera/CC/ManRam.
Collectively, R-H-A is probably worth half a Tex/CC for next year. But +1 Tex or CC doesn’t get us where we need to be anyway in the short term… and it would be very odd to sign a FA for 8 years blowing off the first 2.
In someway, this is the ANTI Vlad move… because when we didn’t sign Vlad, we actually had an average team + Bonds. Getting Vlad would have made it an elite team, if only they could have filled in the gaps cheaply.
But we don’t even have anyone to fill the SS gap – so Sabean makes the correct move by default!
Now if Sabean follows his OF shinanigans he will now sign or trade for ANOTHER SS making Renteria totally superflourous, and play one at 2B!

The trade seems to signal a sea change in the approach of the FO.
a 3 or 4 year deal would have meant that the new boss is the same as the old boss.
This 2 year deal would seem to indicate that the FO is a little more forward thinking than in the past, say, decade.

the point more artfully stated by zenbitz:
What is also important is this is neither a "WIN NOW AT ALL COSTS" move (ca. Bonds years) and not a "FIRE SALE PLAY THE KIDS" move, but it’s a "IMPROVE THE SHORT TERM WITH NO COST TO THE LONG TERM", which is exactly what I think the Giants should be doing. I am not a fan of "tear it down and rebuild" right now, because such an effort essentially wastes the cheap years of Lincecum and Cain.

I think the fact that the front office seems to be holding firm to not giving contracts over 2 years is a sign that they really are committed to the player development and rebuilding approach. There is money to spend right now, and while I’m never an advocate of spending for spending’s sake, there is no reason not to try to make the team a little better in the short term, especially if you can do it without hurting the long term.

This is what pushes me into the Love It camp.
I would have preferred a veteran for Cedeno or Lillyfield trade type move but really this is not a bad consolation prize at all. The signing itself is kind of like going home from the club with the second of third prettiest woman (or man if that’s the side of the plate you swing from) there. A person aint got no legit complaints when that happens.

People are unlikely to eat the cost of a license. They are more likely to continue to buy tickets and re-sell them to make up the cost of the license.

Know by experience
This is tough to do when nobody wants to goto the game. Also G’s are now in the TV advertising market, the need to have people watching their product.
by @ the river on Dec 4, 2008 10:36 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Your second sentence makes no sense, so I’ll address the piece that does.
Eating the entire cost of a license is not preferable to at least making up a part of that cost by selling your tickets. I am not saying these people will make money. I am saying they will minimize the already sunk cost of the license. Saying “nobody wants to watch the game” is ridiculous. The Giants are not going to play to a bunch of empty seats in ’09. People are going to be able to sell at least some of their tickets thus mitigating the cost of the seat license that they already paid for.
by Lars The Wanderer on Dec 4, 2008 11:26 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Let me clarify
The seat license is a one time cost for seats. Once you have the seat license you get the first option, every year, to pay the ticket price for your seats. If you don’t buy the tickets you loose your option, therefore you loose the seats. You would never “make up a part of the cost” of your seat license unless you would start making a profit on your ticket cost (i.e. selling the tickets for more that the face value).
The second sentence that makes no sense to you. Let me see if I can make this easy. The G’s are part owner in a cable station. These stations make money buy selling advertising, therefore is they sell advertising at a greater price they will make more money.
by @ the river on Dec 4, 2008 3:00 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Let ME clarify...
seat license is a one time cost for seats. Once you have the seat license you get the first option, every year, to pay the ticket price for your seats. If you don’t buy the tickets you loose your option, therefore you loose the seats
Once you pay that one time cost, you do not get it back even if you decline the option to buy your seats. The money they made from seat licenses is already in the bank. The money they made from the CSN deal (and they did make money. Something like an additional 40 million) is already in the bank. While the money from those additional revenue streams was coming in, they cut payroll from a high of 90-ish million to something like 75 million or so.
Let me put it this way, before the ‘08 season started, people were dooming and glooming about a 110 loss season, a historic low in runs scored for a season, unwatchable baseball and yet they still sold 2.8 million seats. Obviously enough people thought enough about baseball in general and the Giants in particular to renew their season tickets. And now that the team is going to be better in ’09, they are going to worry about selling fewer seats? People watching less games on CSN? I’m as cynical as the next person, but that just doesn’t make sense.
As far as your original second sentence goes:
Also G’s are now in the TV advertising market, the need to have people watching their product.
That doesn’t make any sense. But now that you clarified, I see what you were trying to say.
by Lars The Wanderer on Dec 4, 2008 3:17 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Clarification 2
Of that 2.8 mil attendance for 2008 how many people actually attended the game? We don’t have those numbers. The 2.8 mil is inflated due to pre-bought tixs from season tix holder. I am a season tix holder. I do sell my tixs that I don’t use. I couldn’t give those tixs away, in some cases, last year. I lost money.
On top of that you have corps. that buy season tixs to give away. In today’s economy that isn’t happening as much (although I don’t think making a “splash” will improve the sell of these types of ticket holders).
Bottom line the G’s need to make a splash. They have to make payments on their ballpark and how they do that is sell tickets.
by @ the river on Dec 4, 2008 3:25 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
As another season-ticketholder, I agree.
The saeat license was a fee paid before the park opened in 2000. I easily much got that back the first two seasons selling tickets at a profit.
The decision now to renew or not renew has very little to do with the seat license, but rather the following:
- Are the tickets worth writing a big check again? (How much will I enjoy going to games?)
- Will there be at least break-even demand for tickets I can’t use?
- Would I regret giving up my right to these premium seats for years to come?
I’m going to renew again because the pros outweigh the cons and I can afford it, but it would be a harder decision if my seats weren’t as good or I thought there would be little interest in the team for years to come.

I too will also renew. The reasons that I got the season tickets still hold true. I wanted to support the team, I wanted to have first rights to post season and I wanted to go to the games of my choice. It’s tough though when the team is crappy because you have to get rid of your unused tixs for nothing.

I don’t know that he ever has before, and I just pulled that out of my ass, but I’m sure he could actually move to any of the other 3 IF positions if one of the following happens; Burriss becomes a MLB quality hitter and Frandsen plays well enough to be the everyday 2B, the Cubs get desperate and offer up Ronny Cedeno for Randy Winn and Alex Hinshaw, we trade Molina at the deadline next year to a catching starved team that has a young stud SS. Knowing the way the Giants front office thinks, I’m sure they like the potential versatility of signing a SS.

It fits in line with this offeseason’s mantra (minus the Denker mess): what we can’t fill immediately from our farm system, we’ll sign to cheap short term deals. I think the Front Office would feel better having a competition in spring training between 2 SS prospects with the idea one of them will turn out, so once renteria’s deal is done, burriss and crawford or maybe noonan could duke it out. i don’t blame the FO for wanting more of a sure thing in at least one of the IF spots, being as the rest of the IF is left to unknowns like Pablo, Franny, Baron Pickoff von IronGlove and Ishi.

Only two years, so it isn't HORRIBLE. But it's bad.
The reason I don’t like it is that he’s not a part of the long term plans, and it means that at the end of the season Manny, Franny, and Velez could still be unknown quantities. The whole point in playing the kids is to see if any of them stick. But it sounds like at least one of the three middle infield prospects, and maybe two of them, won’t get enough AB’s. Which means at the end of next season, we’re not that far from where we are now…
So I fall between ‘hate it’ and ‘whatever.’ Let’s call it ‘dislike it, but am relieved the contract was only 2 years.’

Look, we’re talking about a guy who frankly was pretty bad in the minors so far and had a 150 AB stretch in the majors that looked pretty fluky. Handing him the job based on that would be a pretty poor idea, in my opinion. The right kind of development for Burriss means more minor league time, in my opinion.

I guess I'd see..
2B as an open competition between Frandsen, Velez, and Burriss. I see ST as a competition between Velez and Burriss for a roster spot (Frandsen I’d bet gets on the team no matter what.) If you have two of those three perform well enough to guarantee themselves a starting spot next season, then you balance them out between 2B, 3B, and SS. Like Velez 2B, Renteria 3B, Burriss SS, etc.

fine deal
I like it. B/c it is a short term deal it won’t hurt long term development. Burriss will get his at bats, here (playing 2nd) or in Fresno (playing SS) and he’ll have to prove that he belongs. Signing Renteria to a 2 year deal helps bridge the gap between the current team and the future team when more of the young studs in the minors start to develop and become big league prospects. Right now the team is lacking in realistic SS options (except Burriss) even close to the majors. Crawford, if he’s the one, will take a few years. As will Culberson, Schoop. eHire, etc. Renteria’s been solid and even poor play on his part will be superior to what the team got last season.
And that brings me to the next point, which is that its fairly obvious what Sabean is doing here. The starting pitching was a strength for the team last year and will probably be better this year. But the bullpen blew too many leads and the offense was horrendous. By shoring up the bullpen, and getting the offense to “acceptable” or close to league average, the team has a chance to compete in the NL West. And since he’s doing it without giving up draft picks and mortgaging the future with long term deals, I say he’s doing a decent job and the team will be much improved next year.

schulman:
Renteria will earn $9 million in 2009 and $9 million in 2010. The team option includes a $500,000 buyout. If Renteria is traded anytime during the contract, he can void the option and collect the buyout.

try Baggs at the Merc. 9.5 million team option for 2011.
Castillo got the DFA. Guestimate for Castillo DFA to come before the 2009 season = 2.

Eh,
Not bad, as long as it’s not a vesting option based on performance. Nothing wrong with getting a little more out of him if he performs well.

Oy Vay
Just got a congrats e-mail from a freind for the Rentaria signing. Here’s what I answered:
Affeldt – GREAT signing.
Howry – Could be GOOD, but maybe a bust. Low risk though, which makes it OK.
Rentaria – The only thing that could have been worse is 4 years for Furcal. On a team built on pitching, why sign a guy who, regardless of how he hits, is gonna be a negative in the field? (And I doubt he’ll ever be a plus hitter anymore either!) Once again, spend just for the sake of spending instead of some real plan.
Now they’re talking Sanchez for Cantu! Picture that left side of an infield!!!!! If that crazy rumor is true (God forbid!), don’t you think Sanchez has more value than that? If not, KEEP HIM! I have a new evaluation formula just for Giants fans. I call it Sabeanmetrics:
Aging, declining veteran + Expediancy >/= Courage + Creativity + Patience + Well thought out plan.
P.S. Way to get younger Sabes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not that I’m in love with the Renteria signing, but what “real plan” would you suggest? There aren’t exactly a million options out there at shortstop.

How about this.........
The Braves were talking to SD about Yunel Escobar in the Peavy trade. Problems occurred cause SD wanted more than the Braves were willing to give. I’m not saying it could have worked, but maybe involving us to make it a three-way trade might have gotten us Escobar. If not that, perhaps some other creative thinking could net us a young SS. Yes, we’d have to give something up, but might that not be worth getting a long term solution? I’m certainly not a GM or am privy to behind closed door discussions, but you would hope, just once, we could be surprised by something the Giants did, other than the fairly obvious, easy way. I’m just saying, you can’t just pay old players on the downside of their career and expect a miraculous improvement over their recent history.

I was hopeful of this very same scenario
I would have given up Jonathan Sanchez (even to see him wind up in the division) plus another player or two to get Yunel Escobar.

Something to consider. The giants are built on pitching, but not on ground-ball outs. Weaker defense will have its effect. Groundball will get hit after all. But with the strikeout and the flyball pitchers, maybe it won’t matter as much.

i suck at predictions...but here is one
edgar goes on the dl sometime in may….he then spends the rest of the season on and off the dl…
when he is on the field, his lack of range and lack of bat make fans pissed
this team will still lose 80 plus games next season…no reason to spend money on filler
whatever….you guys wanna keep drinking the sabean kool-aide….go right ahead

how bad of a President do you predict Obama will be? James Buchanan bad or just Jimmy Carter bad?
by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 4, 2008 2:34 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
My favorite bad President would have to be Benjamin Harrison, who was once described as having the handshake of a wilted petunia.
Him or Calvin Coolidge, who, for much of his Presidency, slept for upwards of 12 hours a day – 8 hours a night, plus naps of up to 4 hours.

Yes, I know the real story here
I like Coolidge for this, from the Daily Show book:
"A woman walked up to Coolidge and said ’I bet my friend I could get you to say more than two words to me.
Without missing a beat, Coolidge looked at her and said, ‘Fuck you.’"

“Sabean kool-aide?” Are you Tim Kawakami in disguise?
Free hint: most McCoven either dislike Sabean or barely tolerate him.

Also, because I’m a nerd, it always annoys me a little when people use the phrase “drink the Kool-Aid,” even when it’s spelled right, because, in fact, the Jim Jones people actually drank Flavor Aid, an off-brand knockoff. Because you’ve got to watch your expenses in the midst of a mass murder/suicide.

how interesting...
Type in Renteria in the MLB highlights search, and there’s less than 5 defensive plays between the first… 40 search hits. :D
I for one am actually glad we didn’t get stuck with Furcal for 4 years…

At the new posters who have joined with the seemingly sole intent of slamming this deal.

in the like but dont love camp
I think our farm options at short still need some development so this position needed to be filled. The fact that is only a 2 year deal makes it that much easier to like. I dont see the injury worry posted above as it looks like he hasnt spent any time on the DL since 2007, a year he hit 332. All that and this comparison makes me feel like this was a positive upgrade (and a etter deal than a Furcal signing):
2008 Stats: Hits AB Avg HR RBI Runs SO OBP SLG
Giants SS: 162 703 .230 1 46 72 110 .286 .254
Renteria: 136 503 .270 10 55 69 64 .317 .382
Lastly, I lke the idea of pablito at 1st and either tradign for or signing a 3rd baseman with some pop. A poster yesterday mentioned Beltre as possible trade. I imagine we are going to do something like this over signing Dunn or Burrel.
by uber on Dec 4, 2008 3:18 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
I like but don't love
also. I hope Buriss sticks around the pros though. I think him and Tim are buddies. Either way it doesn’t seem like the downside is too much since I agree w/ those who say that it was too risky to trust Buriss without another 300 ABs which he could get here at second or late innings defensive replacement for Renteria, or in Fresno.
Until the wheels fall off. Unless this is what it looks like with them on.

Emmanuel will play
I’d rather have had Furcal, but 4 years wasn’t going to happen, and it seems obvious Rafael is jerking the Gints and the A’s to get back to the Braves, so f@!k him. On the other hand, every report says Edgar has lost one or two steps and you’ll miss those one or two steps after watching Omar these past few years. Can Renty still hit? Better than Omar and Emmanuel? Probably. I’d rather see Emmanuel play SS and acquire Uggla to play second. Maybe I’ll be surprised. Any how, it’s better than re-signing Neifi.
Don't believe everything you think.

I’m OK with this but slightly worried about his defense, especially if Pablo ends up at third.
