Vintage Giants Pics from Life Magazine
As many of you no doubt know by now, Google is in the midst of archiving and publishing every photograph from Life magazine. While you could seek out Strom Thurmond lifting weights, the craziness of Woodstock, or just about anything else, I prefer to find baseball pictures, especially old Giants-related photos.
In no particular order:
Cards-Giants drew a crowd to Candlestick.
Opening Day, 1958, overlooking Seals Stadium
Willie acknowledges New York fans upon his return as a visiting player in 1962

Bonus 49ers pic: Not from the Life archive, but via Uni Watch, the Niners lined up at Kezar.
Um... open awesomeness thread?

Spectacular
Big props.
And now I miss Candlestick. Who’d have thought that would ever happen?

Kezar
The pressbox appears to sag in the middle.
I was at Candlestick last Sunday for the first time in about 12 years. What a steaming pile. The Niners have to get out of there.

I still like it
Yeah it’s old, but you can feel the history when you’re there.

It's a great place...
…to actually watch a football game. I mean, God help you if you have to take a piss or get a hot dog, but you’ll be in the $500 a game club section in most stadiums with the view you get from a standard upper deck seat in Candlestick.

Niner Shot
Love the KSFO banner; Kezar was slightly ahead of my time, but I had a transistor radio for most of my childhood that never left 560. Niners, Giants (with Lon Simmons broadcasting both), and big band/oldies music when the games weren’t on. That station made one feel like it was still the 1950s. Plus it was easy to find at the very beginning of the dial.

Big Bands/Oldies?
“Reminiscing
I feel you’re near
Once more you’re my love
Of yesteryear”
That was the theme song to a radio show KSFO used to run…wait , Gene Nelson was the host , right?
He ran stuff like “The Shadow” and “The Whistler”.
I , too , caught Lon and Russ on a transistor. REALLY good times!
Damn , thanks for the flashback!

Same here. Listened to a lot of KFRC and KLIV on that transistor too. I think the A’s were on KNBR at the time. with Monte Moore and Harry Caray.

vintage pics
Great shots. Can anyone remember the dimensions at Seals stadium? Was that tiny press box in back of home plate “all there was”? A lot of reporters must have been pretty ticked.

Amazing pics
I wish I’d been around for Kezar Stadium’s heyday. Just the thought of an NFL game a couple blocks from Amoeba Records blows my mind.
My plans for 2009: getting married and attending Tim Lincecum Bobblehead Day.

First off thanks for the great pics!
In the parade, I picture Mays saying to a young Brian Sabean – “Now son, 50 or so years from now you’ll be pulling the strings for this team. Don’t screw it up…or I’ll smack the freckles off yo azz!”

“The Barber” photos are exceptional. Whatever became of the young scrawny kid from Alabama?
