Schierholtz at first?
It seems like various threads floating around assume that the default situation at first base is a Phelps/Ishikawa platoon, but why isn't Nate Schierholtz in the mix? He started as a third baseman before being moved to the corner, so it doesn't seem like a stretch that he could play at least average defense at first, he's a lefty hitter who is the same age as Ishikawa, and the Giants already have Winn, Rowand, and Lewis covering the outfield spots.
ZIPS (where I got the idea, because they projected him as an average defensive first baseman, which is subjective, but its something) has him at .296/.329/.461, compared to Ishikawa's .242/.300/.431, and he's performed very well at both Fresno and San Francisco. Is there just an assumption that the Giants will make a trade that opens up an outfield spot for him? Assumption that he will be traded?

For What Ever Reason The Giants Have Stated Publicly That Nate Will Not Be Tried At 1B
They say they don’t want to subject him to the same experiment that failed for Ortmeier and Bowker. I think thier logic is very flawed and they are just making it that much harder for Schierholtz to get plate appearances.

Wow, I agree with GRM
It seems like a foolishly stubborn position to take. If I were Schieholtz, I’d be practicing at 1B in my own time, just to maximize my career opportunities.

It’s funny how everyone was on the Bowker bandwagon when he hit well his first three months, and like fair weather fans do, now you just laugh. I’m quite curious to see all the reactions when Ishi becomes an ultimate fail. Will you treat him the same?

Neither of them have the kind of track record that warrants a lot of leeway.

I’m not sure where you got all that. I’m pretty sure that was a joke, and I’m not actually going to hold that sign up at a game, nor am I jumping on or off any bandwagons. In fact, I’d still like to see more of Bowker. Get off your soapbox and lighten up a little.

First baseman's mitt
I felt when the Giants acquired Aaron Rowand they should have given Nate a first baseman’s glove. I don’t understand why teams don’t teach their players to play as many positions as possible. Even if they become starters, many if not most players begin their careers as utility players.

Not quite, though they are the COS Giants. Colors were orange and navy blue, though the orange was more predominant in the football unis. Baseball was mostly blue and white with some orange piping. Actually when I played there the outfield didn’t have an out of play fence, and some of the golf team’s practice greens were actually in play, which could make for some serious adventures balls down the line. My freshman year we went to the state finals (no help to weeny bat me) and had I think 10 players drafted into the pros. I thought a couple of them really had futures, but none of them ever made a major league appearance I don’t believe.

I though on the home(left side) side there was a parking lot right next to it. And the visitor side (right side) they had some mobile home style classrooms right next to it. But i do recall a big field on the visitors side but it was probably 150 feet away. maybe i am thinking of a different field….well, this will clear that up…Wasnt the highway(fwy) right outside the left/center field fences…?

Highway 198 does run outside the left field fence. The student parking lot was out past the right field fence, but about 100 yards or so off. There practice golf course used to pretty much surround the baseball field, running outside the right field fence, down the visitors side, around the home side and back towards the gymnasium. From what you say, it’s possible the temporary classrooms could have wiped it out. And in fact, it’s quite possible that golf was whacked from the school budget at some point in the past — it’s been nearly 30 years since I was there and apparently things change when you’re not looking. I even hear that the drive in across Mooney Blvd has stopped using roller skate waitresses (and that’s not a joke, they were still using them in the late 80s when I stopped in last).

Yes, then the layout has changed quite a bit since then. maybe check it out on Google Earth… I played there in spring of ’02 and ’03. I spoke to my JUCO coach last fall and apparently they are still going to the pre-season tournament(s). We would stay in Tulare right on the west side of the 99. We would also make stops to play games at Porterville and Exeter (sp?) and Fresno CC. Good times in the valley, though you know how it is on the road, the team will usually try to find gentlemens clubs to attend and I remember the talent was very, very, very thin….

Hey cool. Yes, it looks to me like the golf course is gone and they’ve added a second parking lot in right field and another one down the 3rd base line. They’ve also added a practice field! That’s big news — we used to practice on the game field and it got pretty chewed up. That field that the second baseball diamond juts into used ot be our practice football field. Though I doubt it still is, it was just a big lawn for the most part with no amenities at all, but it is/was immediately adbutting the locker room. We used to play in a tourney out in Coalinga at a JC that I’m not sure exists anymore (an earthquake in the 80s pretty much did it in) — now that was a land of seriously thin entertainment.

You're thinking of Mearle's Drive-In
Unfortunately, they have gone out of business as of a year or two ago, and they seem adament against selling it for whatever reason. It was a staple of the area, and now it’s just a vacant, run-down restaurant.

The Giants said they want defense at first base. The first baseman would have to be a really good hitter to be bad defensively at first. They don’t like Burrell"s defense at first. They said Dunn won’t play first base. The teams don’t like Manny because they are afraid that he will quit on them like in Boston.

Probably for the same reason he was moved off of third...
Nate has had fairly stone-like hands. Plus, he has the second-best throwing arm in the system from the outfield, and while that is nice at third, it’s pretty much a waste at first.
Teams are reluctant to move players around the field because for most, changing defensive priorities and teaching them new levels can have adverse affects on a player’s offense. Just ask, among others, Fred Lewis and Ben Copeland. Heck, Pablo’s offense even suffers the more he was moved around and asked to play different positions, especially in 2006 and 2007 when the team moved him from catcher to third, then to first, and then back to catcher in 2007.
This would be more of an issue if the team had long-term options filled in the outfield, but with Winn and Roberts both free agents after this year, Schierholtz will have a right field spot pretty open to him soon, maybe even this season with a possible deadline trade (or sooner). This isn’t exactly the Mets trying to find a home for third baseman Danny Murphy since no one is moving David Wright. Plus, Schierholtz would most likely only take at-bats away from other young players at first between Ishikawa and Sandoval.
If anything, I think Fred Lewis has more to worry about, as Schierholtz could push Winn back to left.

Actually,
from what I saw of Nate at 3rd it was his feet that were the biggest problem, not his hands. He just didn’t have quick enough feet either to get in position to field balls (clank!) or to set himself to make accurate throws (and IIRC most of his many errors were actually errant throws). Of course it comes to the same thing, footwork is crucial to any IF, and may well be the most important defensive skill in a 1B’s toolkit.

Pablo's offense suffers?
Pablo’s offense suffers when he is asked to play multiple positions? I don’t see it. He certainly hit well with the Giants in 2008 — while playing 17 games at first, 12 at third and 11 behind the plate. Last season was Pablo’s breakout year (at least from the left side), and he played four positions including DH between the minors and majors.
