Merkin Valdez to have more surgery
Not sure if I'm doing this correctly, but I thought some of you would want to know this. This is Andy Baggarly's report, dated today, in Baseball America. It appears to be subscriber only; he says that Valdez had problems with his already surgically repaired right (throwing) elbow and came back to the US for a medical opinion, and the opinion is that Merkin needs more surgery.
I'm really disappointed for him, and for our bullpen next year.
Mods, please delete if there's already a raging discussion about this somewhere else - I looked but didn't find one.

poor kid
We don't really have that much pitching depth. We don't really have that much pitching depth. FOR GOD SAKE, VERUCA, DON'T GO FAKE TRADING JONATHAN SANCHEZ. We don't really have that much pitching depth
Yeah, but I gave him the Lowry treatment after last season. Meaning that it would be great to get something from him but I don’t expect anything.
This could be a good thing, Perdomo might stay in the bullpen and pitch well. He seems like a similar pitcher when you compare him to Merkin.

Is this referring to the additional surgery we already knew he was having or is this another surgery?
If this is yet a new voyage into his arm, the kid is toast.

my question as well
I remember reading about a new surgery for him a couple months ago
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
Hopefully this means he’ll be ready for the rotation by ’10!
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

I’m hoping this post is referring to the information already shared here and that this isn’t an additional surgery.
I honestly don’t know if this has been reported before or not, but it was in today’s BA posting from Andy – so I assumed it was “new” news. (Like the SAT test, but different).
If this is old news, my apologies all around. I was under the impression Valdez was doing well in his winter league, and was looking forward to seeing him compete in ST for the setup role – so this was news to me.
Sergio Romo: striking out professional hitters since 2005.
I thought the concensus was that we never thought of Merkin as a permanent fix to the bullpen or rotation…more of a temporary fix to make what we had look decent. Once what we had had time to flourish, the likes of Merkin simply wouldn’t be needed.
Tell ya what.
You trade us Merkin, and we’ll give you back Coutlangus.

Best of both worlds friend
