OT - Moving back to Northern California
I was going to title my post "Fielder>>>Cain" but didn't want to risk getting destroyed...
While I don't post often, I read almost every post, all day, every day.
I live in San Diego. I love the city, hate the sports teams and the people. I grew up in Monterey and have been a Giants fan since... birth i guess? I attend all Giants games down here at the boring hellhole that is Petco and make a trip up to the bay once a year to catch a series with my pops.
Even with the terrible economy I have decided to leave my stable job in search of work in the Bay Area. I am currently a General Manager with a local restaurant chain and am looking for a similiar job anywhere from South San Jose to Marin. My move date is the last week of February.
I call upon my fellow McCoven to assist me in any way possible. I don't want to sleep on your couch or eat your Cocoa Puffs (Hijack topic: best cereal???), but I would LOVE any advice or help I could get. If there is anyone around here in the Restaurant Industry that could offer tips, or anyone who would like to proof my resume, or any rich bastard that owns a restaurant in need of a high energy, positive manager, PLEASE let me know. I will be forever grateful!

also, Life is obviously the best cereal. Although I remember it tasting better when I was 12… I also enjoy Fruit Loops but ONLY if its dry. With milk the flavors blend together and taste like peas. Pea’s? Pee’s? Pees? I dont know.

the other day, my cheerios tasted like pees for Rich Aurilia related reasons.

Sorry-
Must disagree. Frosted Flakes (Kellogg’s only, not the fake kind) is the best cold cereal. :-)
Can’t help with the job search as I live out of the area. Good Luck

What Restaurant?
I was in SD (or La Jolla I guess) for 3 years for school. I graudated, moved to LA for a bit, but find myself back in the Bay at least for a little while (interning for the A’s).
I fully share your sentiment wrt San Diego. Great weather, beautiful scenery, but damn insufferable people. Also it’s a bitch getting around anywhere (this is more applicable to LA than SD), and it’s really not the best city for someone under 21.
I realize that helped nothing, so as a foodie, advice I’d give to someone who manages restaurants would be if possible, always print out whatever daily specials you have on your menu (or include some kind of leaflet in it if you don’t print menus daily). It is always an inconvenience trying to remember what the server told me the specials were, its much easier to just see them on paper.
There, now I don’t feel completely useless.

I actually work in the La Jolla/UTC area. The company is Sammy’s, kinda like a CPK style place.
I feel you on the specials. One time the beer list wasn’t printed on a menu and the server spouted off like 10 beers and I had no idea what he said, so I just had water. I missed out on a chance for a beer because of that, I’m still upset about it.
by projectmayhem713 on Dec 30, 2008 12:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
haha
Yes I went to that Sammy’s once back in April (I assume its the one next to Roy’s?), I actually lived in the Costa Verde Towers next door to it in Jan-June finishing up my education. I’m not sure you have any input on the food but I remember nearly choking on the vinaigrette on my pear and gorgonzola salad the balsamic was so strong.

i live in that area right now, i’ll have to stop by and try the place out sometime. I totally agree too, i’m on my fourth year and still can’t move past the people that live there, they’re terrible. My neighbors complained about us putting up Christmas lights at our apartment, so we had to take them down. Punks.

This is tough time to be looking for work, a lot of restaurants are closing and laying people off. Does your current company have any Bay Area connections? Even if it’s the 2 CEO’s going to a convention together… Other than that… start sending out about a bizillion resumes, and check the temp agencies. Do restauranteurs use any sort of restaurant specific “temporary service” ?
Not knowing anything about the restaurant industry, and being in Sacramento, I can’t really help too much. Good luck!
by Merope on Dec 30, 2008 11:59 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, it is definitely a tough time. There are definitely still opportunities out there for me, but there is probably a lot more competition. I am kind of forced to make this move now because of a change in my living situation.
I have some connections with a couple companies, but I am not putting all my eggs in that basket. I am hoping to catch on with a Restaurant Management Recruiter, they are usually pretty helpful.
Worse comes to worse I can probably find a bartender job for a while.

I don’t know what’s in the Bay Area, but out here in Sacramento there always seem to be ads on tv for one, or more of the various casinos. [ “Indian” casinos – not Nevada casinos ]

ohh, good call. I will look into that.
by projectmayhem713 on Dec 30, 2008 1:28 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Any chance...
…you can live with the folks in Monterey while you find a job? Like what’s said, the market does suck, and it’s not worth burning through your savings when you can commute up to SJ and look for a job. You can always crash on someone’s couch in SF for a day or two to look for jobs up in the northern Bay area, and with gas being cheap the hit to your wallet is going to be much smaller.
