Giants Appear to be the favorite to land Burrell
...Sayeth mlb.com. Apparently he'd like to play in the Bay Area, where he has roots, and be reunited with noted McCoven favorite Aaron Rowand.
I've been saying since, oh, July or so that I wouldn't mind seeing him as our first baseman for the right price. Power + draws walks = mmmm. Even if he sucks at everything else.

This man is a danger to himself and others.

Looks like many have left their hearts in SF. Did the word get out that SF has money and is willing to spend?
I think that has an element of truth in it.

eh, hopefully its only a one or two year deal
The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.
Also, it would be funny if Pat Burrell signed with us so that he could hang out with Scott Rowand….and then we went on and traded him.
especially back to the Phillies for Aaron Eyre

If True And Renteria Also Happens Are We Done?
We would have a full 40 Man Roster (stand at 38 now after Affeldt and Howry). We would have upgaded in the middle infield (Renteria), corner infield (Burrell) and Bullpen (Affeldt and Howry).
Would this be enough to make us a real contender for the NL West Crown?
If we do this I do not see how we could afford any of the big 3 or for that matter even another minor free agent. Assuming Renteria at $9M/yr and Burrell at $11M/yr we would be at $92M for the 25 Man Roster. I supose we could still make some trades but it seems to me that they could not add any net dollars.
Or, are the Giants willing to actually spend $100M or more in this economy?
According the Baggs
The Giants have a lot of money to spend:
We know this much: The Giants have money to spend. They’re one of baseball’s highest-revenue teams, even with debt service on their ballpark and millions in deferred money owed to one Barry Lamar Bonds.
Remember, for all their talk of building through player development, the Giants are not the A’s or Rays. San Francisco is a top-10 revenue franchise, easily. The Giants haven’t spent a dime of their windfall from signing a new cable deal with Comcast. And if the Seawall Lot 337 development deal goes down in the next year or two, they’ll be one of baseball’s fattest cash cows.
Add Burrell and Randy Johnson
And my dream team is complete. Hell, if they have the cash, do Sabathia too. A rotation of Lincecum, Sabathia, Johnson, Cain and Zito would be unstoppable, and Sabathia’s bat might provide just the extra bit of pop the Giants need.
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
I think we’d still be a few parts away from being real contenders (namely another starting pitcher and another bat, preferably at third base.)

I hope we aren't serious about Sandoval at 3B
We should trade Bengie while his value is still high, move Pablo back to catcher and get a real 3B(preferably Beltre).
I posted this somewhere else
The M’s want outfielders to complement Ichiro, so would Rowand for Beltre work? Would we even want that? It frees Winn to move to center and Nate in right. Just a thought.
Insanity is just a state of mind.

I could see Rowand + Ishikawa for Beltre working

I could see me dancing in the street after that trade.
Rafael Rodriguez: Your number 8 organizational prospect before stepping a foot on American soil.
I’m pretty sure the Mariners would have no interest in Rowand. They are trying to rebuild, I think they are looking for young OFs under team control (and no this doesn’t call for a reply over-valuing Schierholtz as a trade piece)

I Disagree
Pablo has shown himslef to be very athletic inspite of his size. I see no reason at all to to accept the belief that he will be a bad thirdbaseman. In fact I think he has shown me enough to believe that he will be both an above average offensive and defensive thirdbaseman.

Not much grounds to believe that he will be an above average third basemen defensively. He is raw and untested. The Giants do not need a liability at the hot corner.

by Giant among Angels on Dec 3, 2008 8:19 PM PST up reply actions
Raw and untested =/= liability
Sheesh. I would take “raw and untested” with upside over MANY other things. Besides, he’s not that untested. He’s succeeded at every level so far, including a small, but not so tiny as to be entirely insignificant, session in the bigs. Giants fans aren’t the only ones impressed. I recall him getting a lot of attention throughout the league last year. (of course, so did Velez at one point, so maybe that’s a weak point in my argument)
¿Julio is tourist in San Francisco? Harper's Bizarre!
I recall him getting absolutely no attention throughout the league about his potential to be a good defensive 3B (but as I said to you in another thread, you go ahead and be optimistic about this!)
by FluLikeSymptoms on Dec 4, 2008 12:21 PM PST up reply actions
Im talking about defense, and yes, we need to stick him somewhere where he will not hurt the team. If he has a solid spring defensively at third base then I am more than eager to give him a chance there. ANY player will leap frog through the minors if he rakes, and they will always find a spot for him to play. Again my argument was about defense only.
I Don't Tolerate Intolerance!

Further Beltre Ain't Happening
If not Sandoval then you are looking at Cantu. Sabean has made it clear he is not interest in trading for a one year rental. There has been absolutely nothing linking the Giants to Beltre other then silly wet dreams by you and a few others.

According to "Insiders" Burrell/Dunn and Cantu are second options
That could mean a trade. Yahoo.com reported that the Giants had discussed dealing left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to the Florida Marlins for third baseman Jorge Cantu, who hit .277 with 29 home runs and 95 RBIs last season. Or the Giants could stick with free agency, where sluggers such as Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell are available. But insiders believe that the Giants rate both as only secondary options.
I wonder what our first option(s) is/are

I am sure Burrell can handle 1st base. He was decent at Miami when playing third, but then again, when a player flirts with hitting .500 the coach will do almost anything the player asks. Sandoval at third really scares me even though he has a canon. I think he will get bunted on more a lot until he proves he could handle it. Pablo at first or catcher, nowhere else!

I sort of remember media stories saying, after his down year in ’08, Renteria was going to work really hard over the Winter and get himself in excellent shape. Anyone read that and/or have any updates to that story?

from that site…
We can’t rely on the long ball game after game to win it. We need a lineup that strings hits together, and Burrell is not part of that equation.
This Philly fan needs to be forced to watch the 2008 Giants season from beginning to end.
yeah, relying on the long ball is a bad idea!

So is there any way we could somehow land BOTH Burrell and Sabathia?
couldn’t we like defer payment for Sabathia until his later years or something? Because if we could somehow do that we would easily be the favorite for the NL West.
Assuming the Giants sign Renteria to the rumored 2/$18M deal, they’d have a payroll (25 man roster only) of about $80.1M thus far, and that is without giving raises to any of the guys (like Tim Lincecum) making at or just above the minimum. CC would command about $16-$20M per year (depending how a long term deal is structured.) Burrell will make, most likely, $10-12M (again, depending on structure). That’s adding about $26-32M to a $80M payroll = $106-110M payroll, which would be a substantial increase over the recent payrolls, which were in the $90M range.
Then again, in 2010, Howry ($2.75M) Molina ($6M), Roberts ($6.25M), Lowry ($4.25M) and Winn ($8.25M) all come off the books. That’s $28M, right there, so if CC and Burrell contracts are much more backloaded, then it would seem more possible. Of course, there’s re-signings (possibly of Howry, Molina and Winn) arbitrations (notably Lewis and Sanzhez) and/or extensions of Lincecum, Cain and Sanchez to worry about, too. As of right now though, the team (incl. the Renteria $9M) projects to have a payroll of about $48.9M in 2010, meaning they’d have a whole lotta money to spend past 2009.

I’ll come straight out and say it. Happy Pete should end up on the new wall inside of 10 years. He defines almost decade of Giants baseball. He was a better player then LeMaster and LeMaster presences means you don’t have to be just a Hall of Very Good candidate to be on there. You just have to be a good team mate and define the Giants. In both there case they define a lot of front office futility. Flame away.
