Food for thought...

With the recent rumors, it appears the Giants are going to be pretty proactive this winter in trying to upgrade the ML roster. Does anyone think they're going to try to win now, while trying to maintain and develop actual talent in the minor leagues for once? The few times that Neukom has been interviewed that seemed to be one of his prevailing messages, that the Giants need to develop homegrown talent to be competitive.

But at the same time, does anyone else worry like I do, that it will just be  more of the same like it was with Magowan in charge? Trying to win with old veterans and overpaying to get them. Afterall, Neukom was one of the main partners at the time, so he pretty much signed off on some of the terrible deals that have been made since 2003. At the same time though, SO FAR at least, the Giants have done a good job by getting players at decent salaries and years, and not having to forfeit draft picks to get Affeldt, Howry and Renteria (assuming he signs soon). So at least that would be a change in philosophy. It would be nice to see us improve on the field and possibly even compete sooner than expected WHILE developing talent in the lower ranks. Something we all know should have happened over the past 5 years.

If the Giants really do have some incoming streams of revenues that could help them expand payroll and their development system at the same time, I think we'll all have some major rosterbations to get excited about. Then of course if we trade for Jorge Cantu that could change things pretty quickly. :(
