Guesses at bullpen composition?

Wilson
Affeldt
Romo
Howry
Hinshaw
Miller
Matos

With Valdez bumping Miller or Matos if healthy.

It looks like a better bullpen than the 2008 model, at least.

further, Yabu is also more likely then Miller and Sadler is more likely then Matos.

I forgot about Yabu, and we can certainly argue over Taschner or Hinshaw, but if Sadler starts the season in the big leagues I may have to shoot myself in the face.

How Can You Explain Such Radically Different Opinions Of two Mirror Image Pitchers

Both Hindshaw and Sadler have good stuff and bad control and command. I can see liking the potential of both or hating the lack of command and control of both. But I just can’t get my mind on undrstanding loving one and hating the other.

I don’t love Hinshaw. But I like him better than either Taschner or Sadler. Why? No terribly well-thought out reason. I just think he’s going to be a better pitcher.

mirror images?

Hinshaw had a 3.40 era and 47 K’s in 40 innings. He had 29 BB’s, which is a lot, but he was overall better and less hitable than Sadler, who had a 4.06 era and 42 K’s in 45 innings with 27 walks. Oh and Hinshaw was also making his debut in the majors.

by boonitez on Dec 3, 2008 3:21 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, Mirror Images

Sadler’s limited MLB experience is hardly a factor. In fact it could just as easily be that being unknown by the hitters had alot to Hinshaw’s only advantage which of a higher K rate. Sadler pitched 7 more innings giving up just 3 more hits (1 a HR) but 2 less walks. These two pitchers are indeed mirror images with the same strengths but just pitching with the opposite hand.

by Azmanz on Dec 3, 2008 6:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know that I agree they make a huge difference, but it is certainly true that teams like to carry at least two left handed relievers. Whether that’s sensible or not can be debated, but it’s generally how these things work all he same. For the second slot, I prefer Hinshaw over Taschner. Sadler doesn’t have that going for him, and I’d pick a number of other guys ahead of him.

it does

Lefties that throw 96 and have stellar breaking balls are rarer than righties that do.

by boonitez on Dec 3, 2008 6:56 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Lefties that throw 96 and have stellar breaking balls AND have blonde hair are even rarer. That doesn’t make them more valuable when it comes to baseball.

by rotorueter on Dec 3, 2008 7:05 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

...being left handed isn't at all as unimportant as hair color

Lefties tend to be better against other lefty hitters. That’s why bullpens usually have lefty specialists. Hinshaw has more value as a middle relief lefty specialist than Sadler does as just a middle reliever. Is MadBum not that great because plenty of people throw 97? No; his being a LHP adds a ton of value to him.

by boonitez on Dec 3, 2008 10:42 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Not a great example...

I don’t think leftiness adds much (if anything) to MadBum’s value, since he’s a starter; it’s not as though there’s a shortage of right-handed bats to put in the lineup. I guess his handedness adds something to his overall value as a prospect, since if he fails as a starter he would then be, as a lefty, a more valuable relief prospect. Here’s hoping it doesn’t come to that.

by taliesin on Dec 4, 2008 8:52 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

what?

Being left handed is a HUGE boon to a pitcher. The vast Majority of power hitters in MLB are left handed, and platoon effects are real. Being left handed helps a lot.

This is from the article in the Chron:
“I just got off the phone with Ron Schueler, a special assistant to Sabean who, as GM of the White Sox, acquired Howry from the Giants in the 1997 "White Flag” trade. Schueler saw Howry pitch last season and believes part of the problem was a bad start to the season and overuse by manager Lou Piniella, particularly in the number of times Howry warmed up in the bullpen without pitching."

I think it is very encouraging on two fronts – 1) it kind of explains his drop off last year and 2) it is a pretty damned insightful comment by Schueler, which gives some hope that this FO knows what it is doing.

Good Sabean

I’ve actually liked the offseason moves so far. And a renteria signing would be surprisingly bearable for me, at least for now.

Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.

Sure, whatever.

He’s cheap.

The Denker bus is now bound for San Diego. Those who were passengers on it are now angrily stranded at a gas station in Modesto, CA. Not much about baseball here .

Remember when the polar bear signed last off-season. He was “coming back”, a cheap right hander, etc. I am a bit worried Sabean has purposefully hired the official whipping boy of 2009.

Castillo got the DFA. Guestimate for Castillo DFA to come before the 2009 season = 2.

I’m pretty happy with Howry doin this offseason.

There amass been plenty of articles written this spring about the stud shortstop Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum , as well as the fluid young outfielders and thirteen basemen Kevin Frandsen.

It Phelps that we haven’t given out any large contracts yet.

We wouldn’t want Renteria expensive, mediocre player.

My dream of having an alumna of my high school on the Giants is finally complete.

There’s been a 49er from my high school, and also a professional/Olympic beach volleyball player, but no Major Leaguers to my knowledge.

I was granted this honor by Ed Halicki (Kearny HS, Kearny NJ), though
I was still in HS in 75 when he no hit my then-team the NY Mets.

They say some players get out of bed hitting; Pablo Sandoval doesn't wait that long

Bob Stanley also went to my high school but never player
for the G’s. He was a pitching coach in the minors for the
G’s though (maybe still is).

We also placed John Harkes and Tony Meiola on the US
Mens National (World Cup) soccer team.

And 40-50% learned to read & write. 90-100% learned to
smoke bonghits…

If an alumn from my high school makes it onto the Giants

Then a lot of money has been spent this off-season.

Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
Only [hella] games left until the end of Zito's contract.

For thehavenot, think Vallejo High.

If, however, an alum from my High School makes it to the Giants, I’ll be floored.

(Hint: Hogan High)

If an alum from my High School makes it to the Giants, the universe will explode.

(Hint: I’m not even sure how to spell its name in English).

..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

It would be some strange circumstances if we ended up with the guy from my high school.

Late to the party,

but I’ve got Gary Carter from my high school

People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. Rogers Hornsby

Doug Henry went to my high school. Tennyson High – Hayward. Class of ’82 – I only really knew him senior year, but he seemed a pretty decent guy.

by Merope on Dec 10, 2008 6:13 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I didn’t go to high school with him, but Dustin Delucchi was the best player I ever played against. Him and Tommy Callen, that is. I always pulled for them, dang it.

My high school will never have a MLB player, because if they’re good, they’re going to Serra instead of Burlingame.
