Sanchez for 3B Jorge Cantu floated
Mixed feelings of getting a 3B with some pop, who had a breakout year after sucking up the place the previous seasons. Trading one inconsistent player for perhaps another, but at a point of need. This would of course move Pablo to first.

I don’t believe this rumor at all. This would be a HORRENDOUS trade if it actually happened

Good lord. If that’s what Sanchez’s value is right now, the Giants are better off hanging on to him and hoping that he’ll up his value this coming season.
exactly
if that’s what the Brass is thinking, they don’t know what they have.

The Giants should replace a terrible fielding 3B with an even worse one!

Sanchez for Cantu? HELL NO! Sanchez is worth significantly more than Cantu, who had one good year, is horrendous on defense at 3rd base – and only adequate at 1st base.
Sanzhez, while the numbers may not indicate it, is on the rise. He’s a strikeout per inning LHP who can dominate a game. While he was inconsistent last year, it was the first season the Giants made him a starter and stuck with it. He had been jerked around for the previous couple of years between starting and relieving and the majors and the minors.
While I’m not opposed to trading Sanchez for a power bat, his value hasn’t peaked yet and he’s worth more than Jorge Cantu, who the Giants could have gotten last year for nothing.
I’d add that when I say “power bat” I’d prefer to include Sanchez in a package to get a big time power bat, if possible.

In a sorta-related-OT, the Mariners are set to sign Russell Branyan. I liked him as a darkhorse 3B candidate.

Rabble rabble!
I kind of had hope for him as well. Oh well I didn’t think they would sign Affleldt for what they did so I call it a win.

I forbid Sabean from trading Sanchez for the likes of Jorge Cantu.
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
Fun fact, by June of this year, UZR had Cantu as a -31 third baseman. That’s nearly -3 wins right off the bat by defense alone.

off the bat by defense?
its so damn literal.

I don't consider myself much of a Sanchez fan...
but I just hate Cantu that much. I wouldn’t trade Manny Burris for Cantu, and I don’t think anyone on McC hates Burris more than I do
by NeifiChicken on Dec 3, 2008 11:28 AM PST up reply actions
well...
I might actually give up Burris, that was sort of for illiteration, but I really don’t like Cantu. The defense is a big part of it, but I also think he has an overrated bat that will never produce any better than it did last year.
I was actually on board for the Giants giving him a chance last year, when he was free, but I wouldn’t be willing to give up too much for him.
Even Sanchez for Uggla is hard for me to stomach, but would be alright with it

What?
I don’t see the alliteration. Or the illiteration. Well, maybe the illiteration.
bringing you moral turpitude since 1963
Cantu is young-ish at 27 but unless he’s a DH, he’s undoing almost everything he does at the plate by playing defense in the field.

What does your Commodore 64 say about his short stint at 3B in 2005? I can’t find anything. I’m just so, so, so loathe to put too much stock into one year’s worth of defensive stats, and if Cantu were just bad instead of abysmal, I wouldn’t mind this trade that much.
by Grant Brisbee on Dec 3, 2008 11:37 AM PST up reply actions
Yeah, putting a bunch of stock in just one year of defensive stats isn’t good, but Cantu has been a terrible defender for several years. In ’06 he was about -16 runs at 2B by plus/minus. Chris Dial had him closer to -30 runs if you extrapolated him to 150 games.
PMR had Cantu in the lower tier of third baseman this year. In 2005 PMR had him as the worst 3B in baseball. If you look at RZR he’s been at the bottom every year for whatever position he’s played. Cantu scored a positional neutral 38 in Tango’s Fan Scouting Report, 50 is league average.
Defensively, 2B and 3B are pretty similar in terms of difficulty to play. If Cantu was playing SS and was doing terrible, you might expect him to play better at an easier position like 3B or 2B, but because he’s been really terrible at 2B he’s also probably going to be equally terrible at 3B. He’s either a 1B or DH, preferably a DH.

If this is true, I doubt it is a 1 for 1
There has to be another piece coming back. The only reason Sanchez was inconsistent was that he hit the wall from an IP standpoint.
’06: 40.0
’07: 52.0
’08: 158.0
With that kind of IP jump it is no wonder he had a bad second half.
With all of that said, I doubt this rumor is true anyway…

The bases were drunk, and I painted the black with my best yakker. But blue squeezed me, and I went full. I came back with my heater, but the stick flares one the other way and the chalk flies for two bases. Three earnies! Next thing I know, skipper hooks me and I'm sipping suds with the clubby.
Wow- quite the fail

I have no problem with selling high on Jonathan Sanchez. Jorge Cantu does not constitute selling high. DO NOT WANT.
I think even the most bearish of Sanchez supporters realize that even if he does wash out as a starter, he could be a nice bullpen piece. To trade him for Cantu is pretty startling.

Bay City Ball
Part of the reason I would be OK with trading him is the ridiculous workload that he’s been subjected to. If he blows out his arm completely, he won’t help us in the bullpen either.
That being said, I don’t want to get rid of him unless we are getting some serious talent.
Wait a second...
When you say “ridiculous workload” do you mean his being bounced around from bullpen to rotation? Because he has actually thrown a decent amount of innings the last few years.
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
The bouncing around was part of it, but I was mostly referring to the massive jump in innings pitched from 2007-2008.
2007- 75.2 IP
2008- 158 IP
Okay
Still, less than 300 innings in two years isn’t bad.
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
I'm not sure it would be selling high if we traded him this off-season.
Nor would it be selling low. Maybe selling middle?
Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense.
Trade would have ramifications
This trade is just one transaction in going a long way in improving this team. A solid, good RHH who is young and coming off a big season. Instead of spending $$$ on Dunn, Tex, Burrell SF could get the middle of the order power bat who still is in their prime and under control until 2011. This would still allow Sabean to go after Sabathia if he so chooses.
manramifications?

Giants_Junkie said in a deleted,/repeat thread:
“Clearly, if Cantu could return to his 2005 level of production (.286, 28 HR, 117 RBI) this could make sense, but I am not a believer that his resurgence last year (.277, 29 HR, 95 RBI) is a sign that he’s all the way back to being a dependable middle-of-the-order guy. Plus, he plays 3B/1B now (rather than his ’05 position @ 2B) and these stats are not as "valuable” from a CI slot as if they were if they’d been coming from a middle infielder.
Looking (really, searching) for a bright side, I suppose locking in a 1B/3B duo of Cantu / Sandoval has some upside (and an infield with these two and Renteria does have some short-term appeal). Also, such a deal could mean MadBum or Alderson (or even Nicholson?) gets a look early in ‘09…but I’m not sure that’s enough of a bright side to make up for my sense that dealing Sanchez is simply a bad idea.
What do you all think? If we sign Renteria (looking likely) and add Howry (80% odds?) and Cantu (50/50?) we will have some serious rosterbation ahead of us, which would keep things interesting here at the Chronicles…"

PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
The Giants and Marlins have discussed a trade that would send talented young left-hander Jonathan Sanchez to Florida for hard-hitting infielder Jorge Cantu. The Giants have inquired about some others who could possibly play third base for them, as well, including the Brewers’ superb young shortstop J.J. Hardy. However, it appears Milwaukee has little desire to move Hardy, making the Giants look into Cantu

Gosh, we already have terrible infield defense and refuse to draw walks. We could just release Sanchez instead and save on the cost of a uniform.

The fact that this is being seriously considered is pretty much conclusive proof
that Sabean is still, in fact, an idiot. In his good seasons, Cantu has done enough with the bat to make him a league-average player despite his horrific defense. Most of his seasons have not been good.
He’s a bench scrub, not a guy you trade a cost-controlled starter with a 4.23 tRA for. You could probably replace him with Jesus Guzman and not notice the difference.
