Randy Johnson Is a Giant. Also, a Giant.
The Good:
For starters, Randy Johnson. The guy is 45, but he can still pitch. After missing most of 2007 with back surgery, Johnson came back to pitch 184 strong innings. He still has one of the highest strikeout rates among starting pitchers, and his control is still good. The Giants have four of the best strikeout pitchers in the league in their rotation. That's the best way to minimize the possibility of a porous infield defense.
The Bad:
Nothing comes to mind. There will always be a few folks who think that if the Giants didn't spend $8M on Randy Johnson, they'd be able to put the entire Dominican Republic on retainer, but I doubt this money isn't taking anything away from the developmental budget. Everything about this move makes sense. The Giants needed a fifth starter, but they didn't want to commit long-term to another pitcher with four rotation spots set in stone and two top pitching prospects on the way.
The Ugly:
Do I have to? Yeah, I suppose I do.
I mean, we are going to have to watch this guy for a while.
Fantastic, low-risk move. If Johnson's back goes wonky, the Giants will go with whatever in-house fifth starter they were thinking about in the first place. Kevin Pucetas? Joe Martinez? Other, Other? There's less pressure on that bunch, and they can prove their worthiness in Fresno before a trial of fire. And by "fire," I mean "slow groundballs finding their way between third base and short."
Right now, there's a spaceship entering the orbit of Fxcxxx 9. On the ship, a goateed man is held in suspended animation, thinking about how to sign Joe McEwing to fill Travis Denker's roster spot. In the meantime, we'll enjoy Pod Person Sabean and his sensible offseason moves.
Comments
I’m very, very happy with this move. $8 mil. One year. We don’t lose a draft pick. This also makes moving Puentes or Sanchez much easier to swallow. Though I firmly believe we should try trading lesser prospects to the over-staked Yanks for Swisher. Suddenly we have a team. Vamos Gigantes!
By the way Grant, I live/play in a band with your old friend Ryan Offield.

There is a lot more potential for making fun of Randy Johnson than any other pitcher on the market not named Livan. The upside is his potential for laughs is due to his age and his horrendous physical appearance, not his pitching.

I'm in love with moving young pitching to the majors as much as anyone,
but why shouldn’t the Giants sign experienced, innings-eating veterans for 1-2 year deals right now and allow Pucetas. Martinez, English, Alderson, and Bumgarner to move their way through the system wisely and develop normally instead of being rushed too fast? We’ve had enough Bococking of late, and I don’t want to see a system that can be 10-deep in real or potential starters by the end of 2009 be suddenly ruined for rushing minor league pitchers too fast to the big club.

[Peers over parapet]
Wow. I can honestly say I didn’t expect such a tidal wave of enthusiasm. Now, I know it’s great to steal a free agent from a divisional rival ‘n’ all, but at the risk of lobbing a bucket of reality-flavored water onto the celebrations, this is a pitcher who has done the following over the past three seasons
2006:
First half ERA 5.13
Second half ERA 4.85
2007
First half: only pitched 56.2 innings
Second half: did not pitch at all
2008
First half: 5.23 ERA
Second half: 2.41 ERA
Really, Johnson has had one-half of a good campaign over the past three years. It just happened to be the last one. So to be blunt, rather you than us, to risk $8m or more on rolling a six on a dice. It’ll certainly make the rivalry a bit more interesting this year: with Bonds not being about in 2008, the division seemed a bit bland! Well, until Manny showed up and we could all join forces and focus our hatred there… ;-)

No way Sabean signed RJ to fill their hole as a 5th starter. The proof is they guaranteed $8MM with the possibility of the salary going as high as $13MM. They have RJ penciled in as the #2 starter. Sabean is expecting as least 175 innings from RJ. And the Giants already have another very expensive 5th starter.

From where I’m sitting, he has one of the best K/BB ratios around, he’s had an ERA under 4.00 4 of the last 5 years, and opponents’ OPS has been under .725 for the last five years running.
He’s also 45, and could fall apart at anytime, but since we already have good front of the rotation starters in Lincecum and Cain, it seems like a pretty good risk to take for one year.

a pretty good risk to take for one year
Not a risk we were prepared to take, at the price. To answer Speedforthewin too, $8m would basically have used up our free-agent budget and left us with someone like Chris “.196” Burke starting at second-base. Fine, if Randy turned out to be both healthy and effective, but I’m guessing there were big enough question-marks to make us back off taking that chance.

makes sense
especially given that Arizona could trot out a rotation of Webb, Haren, Davis, Scherzer and Petit and be fine. The Giants don’t know if Lowry will be healthy, and have two pitchers who could use some more seasoning in Joe Martinez and Kevin Pucetas who would have been the other candidates for the 5th starter spot. It makes sense for both sides. btw, wouldn’t Felipe Lopez start at second, not Burke?

Lopez will start now
But that was part of the reason we could offer Lopez $4.5m, was because we hadn’t put it all into the Johnson basket. We’re really reliant on Scherzer stepping up and replacing Johnson in the rotation: that’s our throw of the dice right there, but it’s a minimum-wage one!

Wait… what does this have to do with the rivalry? It’s a very low risk, low investment move on the Giants’ part. Even if Johnson’s back kerplodes and he plays two preseason games, we don’t really lose out in any way.
My Dave Righetti is better than your Dave Righetti.

ERA doesn’t tell the hole story. Johnson has maintained good peripheral stats over the last 3 15 years. 2006 was definitely one of the worst years of his career, but he still maintained above average K and BB numbers, and the 5.00 was a fluke. Since then he’s only improved. And no I will not press your link.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.

Well
It’s more like regression than improvement. He basically had one off year and then returned to form. Then again, he was injured in 2007, and then suddenly recovered completely a year later, at age 45. But he’s a freak of nature anyway. And more importantly, I don’t care.

Also, PARK effects
Even in that year with that 5 ERA, Johnson’s ERA+ was 90. That’s is only slightly worse than the average 4th starter. For a team that wants to contend, it is pretty acceptable coming from a 5th starter, ie a contending team should generally try to do better than average, especially one with a poor offense.

War?
I must have missed that memo. I’ll flip that question back at you. Why do you bother posting on the ’Pit? Especially given that some of your comments – as you freely admit – border on trolling.
Personally, sometimes it’s interesting to quiz other fans about the moves their team make, as their perspective can be radically different. If Grant feels that counts as a “war”, I’ll happily withdraw. I have way too much respect for him to instigate anything like that. Though actually, the fans here have been far more friendly to us visitors than on certain NL West sites I could mention…

(My apologies , Chief.)
If I’m considered a "troll’ on the ‘Pit – well , not much I can do to sway that opinion other than keep troll-like comments to myself , which I actually believe I have. But that can be looked at as a biased assessment. (The "trolling motor’ thing is , of course , self deprecatory humor.)
Of course , one man’s good natured poke (The uniform colors changing , fr’ instance) is another’s mean – spirited slam. Tone and intent are perpetually misinterpreted online , and sometimes no matter what you say you’re inanely judged by your allegiance to some sports organization other than that which the forum represents…not that that ever happens , lol

You need to took at PARK EFFECTS
Raw ERA in an extreme park like Arizona is deceptive.
For example, in 2006, when Johnson ended up with a 5 ERA, league average in Arizona was 4.50. From a 4th starter that is slightly below average. From a 5th starter, it’s above average, if not a contending team. If a contending team, acceptable / decent.

Yeah, ok, looked at the columns wrong
But, that league average 4.50 ERA was in Yankee stadium.
From a 5th starter, it’s above average, if not on a contending team. If a contending team, acceptable / decent.
The typical 5th starter is absolutely horrendous.
Also, $8M for 1 year is basically market rate for a slightly below average player. If Johnson can produce an ERA of around 4.3-4.4 over about 180 IP with the Giants, he’s basically worth that contract.

Any word on the incentives?
I’d agree: $8m is likely good value, if Johnson remains healthy. However, it seems there are $5m in incentives also available: if those are easily attainable (and I haven’t heard specifics), then you’re looking at $13m…which is not your slightly below-average player! Anyone know what those incentives are yet?

No specific word, but it seems that $2.5m are for performance and the other half is for awards. So, if Randy performs well, it’s likely a $10.5m contract, which is hardly outrageous for a top-3 starter, which is what he is likely to be in SF.

While I like the move, it’s sad that Johnson is getting only $1 million more (in base salary) than Durham did when he was here. I’m not sure what the figure states: Durham was grossly overpaid, Johnson’s not getting enough, or the market is so screwy. Maybe all three.

Here you go:
The rules of the Hall indicate that the player will be depicted wearing the cap of his “primary” team. Although the Hall always had the final decision-making power regarding which cap would appear, for many years the Hall deferred to the wishes of players for whom more than one team could fit the description of “primary” team, and allowed each player in that category to choose the cap which would appear on his plaque…
In 2001, the Hall of Fame decided to change the policy on cap logo selection, given rumors that some teams were offering compensation such as number retirement, money or organizational jobs in exchange for the cap designation. (For example, though Wade Boggs denied the claims, some media reports had said that his contract with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays required Boggs to request depiction in the Hall of Fame as a Devil Ray). Although the decision-making process would be a mutual responsibility, the Hall, not the players, would have the final say in such matters.

I didn’t know the history of his nickname and looked it up. It’s pretty amusing:
In his youthful days, Johnson clearly had a lot going for him, yet something was missing.
A nickname.
Then came a seemingly insignificant exchange with a teammate.
“I was given [my nickname] when I first got called up to the big leagues in 1988 by a former teammate of mine, Tim Raines,” the 6-foot-10 hurler recalled. “He was about 5-foot-9. He bumped into me, looked up and said, ’You’re a big unit.’”

I’m not the smartest baseball mind in the world (probably the least baseball-intelligent semi-regular poster here), but it seems to me that you could do a hell of a lot worse than RJ as a 5th starter for 8 mil. I would so much rather have him than the likes of Misch or Correia or Hennessy or any of the other garbage that was trotted out in that position last season.
Add to it the fact that the youngins get more development time and it looks even better.

Also: Suck it, D-back fans. I don’t like you, so there. And your state is too damn hot.

We don't really have that much pitching depth. We don't really have that much pitching depth. FOR GOD SAKE, VERUCA, DON'T GO FAKE TRADING JONATHAN SANCHEZ. We don't really have that much pitching depth

Yup.
RJ watched A Christmas Story , took a leak , washed his hands and stepped outside into the sharp Seattle winter air.
He eyed the pole.
The pole eyed him right back.
“Nah , " thought Randy , "That stuff can’t be true…can it?”
(DIscount Tire commercial announcer’s voice) “NOW YOU KNOW!”

That’s along the lines of the Trevor Hoffman denim shorts photo.
"While conservatives tell you 'leave things alone and no one will lose,' and liberals tell you 'interfere a lot and no one will lose,' baseball says 'someone will lose.' Not only says it - but insists upon it! ... Democracy is lovely, but baseball's more mature." BVCE supports SF Dugout and Manny Burriss.

Great signing.
Pretty much the exact move I wish the Braves had made.
I guess I should be one to talk.

There's days I couldn't give a fuck.
And in between is where I'm stuck.

I’m actually really pleased by the front office. The offseason started off a little wonky with Denker, but since they’ve done really well. I can’t believe I have confidence in them making intellegent decisions. Weird.

Not sure if it's been mentioned
but we’ll probably get to see a pitcher win his 300th game as a member of the Giants. That’s pretty cool.

Might be
the last 300 game winner ever.
That’s kinda special.
