Giants need a bat. How about signing...

I am just throwing this out there, but why wouldnt the giants go after manny ramirez? I mean I know hes not a clubhouse guy but for a short term deal it seems like it could not hurt and could be the final touch to go along with our new and improved pitching staff... Just want to hear everyones thoughts. I personally would love Mannys bat in the middle of our lineup. What do you think?

Signing him would probably, all things considered, make us the NL West favorite.

But I think he’ll be too expensive and despite his bat, probably not worth his paycheck, due to his awful defense.

I agree. Or as we chanted in the left field bleachers this past season:
“What’s the matter with Manny?”
“He can’t RUN!!”

by Merope on Dec 27, 2008 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

Considering that all of the other teams that would normally be after Ramirez have either signed someone else, have pulled out entirely, or want no part of him, perhaps Manny signs a 1-year deal and tries again next offseason for a big payday? I doubt it, but it is a possibility. (of course anything is a possibility. It might be possible that Xanthan is not a computer).

The Dodgers have a 2+1 deal on the table already. I think it is inevitable that he ends up back in Smell-A.

at this stage of his career, i kind of doubt he’s looking for do-over fa years. he’ll look to get as much as he can now before his value diminishes further due to age.

Xanthan is most obviously a computer….

I also think he’s headed back to LA

So that makes it:
1. L.A.
2a. Giants
2b. D’Backs
4. Rockies
5. Padres

Right? For now anyway…

I hate to say it but AZ is 2, we’re 3.

Remember they’ve got a lot of very young hitters, some of which will improve.

And I think Colorado will be right with us. They did lose Holliday, but Tulo should be back to full strength; Iannetta, Stewart, Hawpe, and Atkins still power the offense; and the young pitchers have lots of promise. They have the better hitting, we have the better pitching. I think it’ll be close, but I suspect they’ll finish ahead of us.

Manny’s bat would instantly turn this team’s offense from “meh” to “eh”, but our outfield is already too crowded. Also, Manny sucks on defense.

I’m going to pull a groug here and put this in my signature:

We don’t actually have much pitching depth.
If Sanchez or Cain is gone, then their spot probably gets taken by Pat Misch or Joe Martinez.
We should’t trade pitchers unless we have someone good to replace them.

Manny to the Dodgers

The Dodgers aren’t letting Manny sign with the Giants. Whatever offer we make, they will top. This might be a good thing to force the Dodgers into spending more than they wanted to, however.

by rxmeister on Dec 27, 2008 8:26 AM PST reply actions

sigh....

this “need a bat” thinking is just completely wrong, especially with regards to Rameriez. If the Giants sign Manny they would have to either sit Lewis (who was one of their better players last year) or shift the outfield alignment to Winn in CF, Lewis in right and new acquisition in left (let’s face it, the 2nd option will not happen despite Rowand sucking last season).

So assuming the GIants sign Manny here’s how it would breakdown. Manny was worth 6 wins last season which is phenomenal; however, the previous 3 seasons he contributed only 1.2, 3.9 and 3.2 wins. I’ll be generous and say he will be worth 4.5 wins next season. Fred Lewis was worth 2.6 wins last season. Let’s say he regress to 2 wins. Fred Lewis makes the league minimum for the next 3 seasons. Manny will require, let’s say, 4 years 20 million per year.

For the cheap cost of 20 million dollars, the GIants win 2 more games. (remember, I am being generous with Manny and conservative with Lewis). Is going from 80 to 82 wins worth 20 million? Of course not. This analysis also doesn’t include the fact that Manny is a good bet to suck by the end of his contract.

Signing? Naw

I think the giants can walk away from the FA’s now with a sense of accomplishment. They filled some needs without breaking the bank, losing draft picks, or giving absurd amount of years to juan pierre types.

We should look at trades now, and I am liking the idea of trading with the yankees for swisher, or at least guys like swisher. The Giants should price out the trade market now, get some teams in on some of their extra pieces and get the best out of the lot of them.

1 bat like swisher’s could make this team league average offense with ridiculous pitching

what was his OBP? .330’s? Granted, his avg was low, but i think we can buy low on him and see him bounce back. If he returns to form of .250 with high slugging and decent OBP I would be pretty happy, especially if we managed to not give up too much for him.

Good point

but that could work even more to our advantage, since we can eat some of his contract in lieu of giving better prospects. I have to admit Swisher is a steal for 6 mil, but 11 mil is more of a bust.

my interpretation of needing a bat means...

driving home runs in the middle of the lineup. Someone who pitchers hate to pitch to. Thats who the giants need to get them over the hump. IMO and randy winn is not that guy. So yes Randy does not suck but hes not the bat we need. End of story
