Giants sign Randy Johnson!

It was just announced on KNBR by Ted Robinson.

I've not seen anything yet on the internets anywhere.

Can anybody confirm? deny? It's a one  year deal, there were no monetary details given.

I never liked Randy Johnson all that much, but I'd rather have him, than have to face him, also better for him to get that 300th win with us... than pitching against us!

By the time I get this to 75 words - I'm sure a million people will have posted this already, feel free to delete as necessary!

YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had a feeling this was going to happen because Buster Poindexter Olney said on ESPN today that he talked to Unit’s agent and he was about to sign. I didn’t think the negotiations were very far along with anyone else other than us. Great signing!!

Hasn’t been confirmed anywhere else that I have seen….

Randy Johnson has agreed to a one-year deal with the San Francisco Giants, FOXSports.com has learned.

Johnson, 45, needs just five wins to reach 300. He’s also chasing 5,000 strikeouts, entering the season with 4,789.

After an injury-plagued 2007, Johnson bounced back last season to throw 184 innings with a 3.91 ERA for the Diamondbacks.

Johnson joins a San Francisco rotation that already includes 2008 Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum, Matt Cain and Barry Zito.

The Dodgers were also interested in Johnson, who preferred to stay on the West Coast while playing for a team that holds spring training in Arizona.

The deal is expected to be announced Friday night.

How far are you from the 5 fwy? Go north to Florence Ave Exit (exit just south of 605 Junction). Turn left at offramp and drive about 50 feet and turn left into parking lot. Birdnest restaurant. The garlic chicken is excellent.

Los Angeles, I'm Yours - The Decemberists
Oh, great calamity
Ditch of iniquity and tears
How I abhor this place
It’s sweet and bitter taste
Has left me wretched, retching on all fours
Los Angeles, I’m yours

Speed, defense... and an almost fanatical devotion to getting picked off.

“California Uber Alles”

I am Governor Jerry Brown
My aura smiles
And never frowns
Soon I will be president…

Carter Power will soon go away
I will be Fuhrer one day
I will command all of you
Your kids will meditate in school
Your kids will meditate in school!

[Chorus:]
California Uber Alles
California Uber Alles
Uber Alles California
Uber Alles California

Zen fascists will control you
100% natural
You will jog for the master race
And always wear the happy face

Close your eyes, can’t happen here
Big Bro’ on white horse is near
The hippies won’t come back you say
Mellow out or you will pay
Mellow out or you will pay!

[Chorus]

Now it is 1984
Knock-knock at your front door
It’s the suede/denim secret police
They have come for your uncool niece

Come quietly to the camp
You’d look nice as a drawstring lamp
Don’t you worry, it’s only a shower
For your clothes here’s a pretty flower.

DIE on organic poison gas
Serpent’s egg’s already hatched
You will croak, you little clown
When you mess with President Brown
When you mess with President Brown

Under the Bridge - Red Hot Chili Peppers

Sometimes I feel
Like I dont have a partner
Sometimes I feel
Like my only friend
Is the city I live in
The city of angel
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I drive on her streets
cause shes my companion
I walk through her hills
cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds
And she kisses me windy
I never worry
Now that is a lie

I dont ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Its hard to believe
That theres nobody out there
Its hard to believe
That Im all alone
At least I have her love
The city she loves me
Lonely as I am
Together we cry

I dont ever want to feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Under the bridge downtown
Is where I drew some blood
Under the bridge downtown
I could not get enough
Under the bridge downtown
Forgot about my love
Under the bridge downtown
I gave my life away

Plus side is that they don’t have much committed to 2010. We’re looking at approx 25 million to spend next year. This year Ishi, Frandsen/Burriss(/Velez?), Pablo, Flew, Nate all have an opportunity to show they belong on this team long term. While Renteria & Rowand are signed on for 2010. Posey’s progress will be fun to monitor. Lincecum, Cain & Zito should still be in the rotation then also. Randy’s spot will be open again. Sanchez is the guy to watch this year (for me at least). Bullpens are unpredictable, but it’s hard to not be enthusiastic about Wilson, Affeldt & Romo.

I’m really pumped for next year. This should be the year we see what we got in the kids & what pieces we need to acquire to make a legit shot at competing again in 2010. We’ll have the finanical flexibility & hopefully enough cheap ML talent by then to make some noise.

Don't think, it could only hurt the ballclub.

by my count, the 2010 salary situation currently sits about about $52 million. Several big contracts come off the books after 2009:

Winn: $8.5m
Johnson: $8m
Roberts: $6.5m
Molina: $6m
Lowry: $4.5m
Howry: $2.75m
Total: $36M

Cain’s salary increases by $1.6m to $4.25m, so that’s still a net (with raises, if any, aside) of $34.4m coming off the books in 2010.

Definitely better than Beau Mills.

on his way to his Yankee’s press conference, he was acting like the biggest jerk in NY. Anyway, now that he is a Giant, I don’t care what he does especially if he wins a whole bunch and plunks a couple of Dodgers starting off with Russell Martin. I think the Giants staff becomes the biggest threat in the NL west. Now that Zito is not the most senior starting pitcher, he could relax and learn some wicked stuff from the Big Unit.

The fans speak!
Pathetic. Those of us who supported Sabean through the dark years of the Bonds Era are now fed up. He is coasting towards retirement while the Giants remain perennial has-beens and jokester louts. I’ll bet green money this is the extent of Sabean’s deals this winter. Real nice: a shortstop nobody else wanted and a washed-up old fastball freak who wants nothing more than to slide effortlessly into retirement on a team devoid of expectations. Thanks, Brian. Now go away.

Hmm...

I think $8M + $5M is a little steep in this market, but its a slight overpay and a one-year commitment. I’d still prefer if the Giants spent this kind of money on a Rick Porcello overpay in the draft type (like the Sox do), but really, not much to complain about here.

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

No, we could just sign Dunn or Burrell, that would be offensive improvement without giving anyone up. It would be a step back defensively though, which is why I’m against it. Anyways, you’re allowed to win games 3-2, which is what this team will be doing.

Well, of course Randy alone won’t improve the team. The Giants’ need for offense is pretty obvious. However, I don’t think the Giants are aiming to be big time contenders in 2009. Whom would we bring up to fill in the spot in the rotation? The Giants’ upper-minors starting pitcher pool is pretty thin.

by Natto on Dec 26, 2008 9:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t see where signing a 45 year old pitcher makes Sanchez tradeable. They have made it pretty clear that any moves they make this offseason will not affect the long term plan. Trading Sanchez does just that. They have one possible move left, and that’s a corner infielder. I look for a Wiggington or Crede signing to fill that need, especially when we already know what’s being offered for Sanchez and it’s nothing worthwhile. (Cantu, Encarnacion)

Johnson , like Jordan and Jesus Lincecum , is – yes – a freak.
Someone blessed (Not with a sweet visage – oh , LORD no) with the physical abilities to excel FAR above that of mortal man. How can he teach someone with a different physiology how to duplicate his unique body’s performance?

Sure , they can mimic – but I’m not betting big they’ll succeed like he has.

great rotation set up. on another note, I would like to claim adoption rights to Randy Johnson. Has anyone else claimed him yet? i need to trade in my todd jennings for an uglier, more productive player

Todd Jennings: If he's on the DL, he can't suck as much, right?

I think we’re going to have a “draft” sometime before the season.

ok, i’ll hold off until then

question 2

Who will wear the #51? will Lowry surrender it to Randy?

The way the Giants hit, will it take all season for Johnson to get 5 more wins? His run support in Arizona for 2008 was around 4.47.

A McC newcomer but not outstanding.

Nice. As long as Sabes doesn’t go out and get Cantu or EE or someone like that for Sanchez….

Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all.

I love this move for two words:

Madison Bumgarner.

Screw the rest of it. It’s a one year deal, and if the Giants contend this year, it’s bonus and little more.

But Bumgarner has a ton in common with the Big Unit coming up, even if the Unit has a good six inches of height on him. Others might benefit from learning from Johnson, but with MadBum, a good shot of working with him even for just one spring could turn a great prospect into an elite one.

Great move, Sabes. I support it.

Is there any way we offer him arbitration next year?

If he has another year like the one he just had he’d be at least a type B free agent. But I seriously doubt he’d refuse arbitration, so there’s virtually no chance we’ll get a draft pick next year, right?

If he retires (which is likely), we won’t get a draft pick

Now we finally have enough firepower in the rotation to deal with Juan Pierre.

Also, and I don’t think this was said before, he’s basically even on fly ball to ground ball the past few years, with leftover line drives, so outfield defense is still premium for us with all our starters. If Lewis is the best defensive LF we have, we’ve gotta leave him there. Don’t be fooled by a shiny Burrell or Dunn. I kinda wish we still had Rajai.

If nothing else at least we know that we won’t be the victims of RJ’s 300th career win. Which otherwise probably would’ve happened at the Phone Booth. My nightmares had it all planned out. Matt Cain had pitched a shutout through eight innings, in the top of the ninth he gives up a one run homer to Eric Byrnes. Randy Johnson gets his 300th career win [and his 38th career shutout] and we all go screaming into the night.

one run homer?

that kind of struck me as odd, because they never call them that. They’re always called solo homers. They should also make up names for two run homers and three run homers. They certainly never call grand slams “four run homers.” What the hell were we talking about again??

Bottom line...

Having this big johnson doesn’t mean we’ll score more, but if we offer up a dirty sanchez, we just might.

New bottom line...

Having Johnson should reduce Rock Head’s urge to squeeze wring ever last possible out from Tim and Cain because of the ’Pen being shot.
