OT Hanukkah and being Jewish around Christmas

So Hanukkah is upon us and Christmas is rearing it's ugly head, and I'm wondering what the rest of my chosen peoples do when their family are away.  I'll be going to my gf's house for the 3rd year now and still don't really get this whole Christmas thing.  Over the past three years  I've felt like a stranger in a strange land an ambassador or a foreign diplomat, who is only there on observer status.  Anywho enough about me, what about the rest of the flock?  Chinese and a movie?  Indian food and comic books?  Middle Eastern food and a marathon session of Counterstrike?

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Actually, I should be doing these things now but I’m lazy. Save the picking my dad up because that’s actually Christmas.

This is the first Christmas with no kids at home. One is staying at school (Vandy), and the other is celebrating with her new husband and family. Mrs. NVSFG and I are looking forward to a quiet, totally stress free day. We have already done the presents and what not last weekend, so the day will be spent hanging aound watching movies, eating, and doing pretty much nothing at all.

Color me envious. I really fucking hate the holidays (Christmas and Thanksgiving for my family). I love the time off work, but everything else seems stupid and trite to me. If it wasn’t tradition people would laugh at it, and I hate doing things because of tradition.

Not a big fan of the “commercialization” of the major holidays myself. If you want to remember what they are really about, spend some time tomorrow at a shelter or food kitchen. It will remind you what the Christmas is really about.

You could say the “it depends on who’s asking” thing in regards to pretty much anything. It doesn’t make it a “true meaning”, does it?

Yeah, that’s my plan for next year. I’m gonna find a women’s shelter or a soup kitchen or something that needs volunteers and just help out there next December 25. My holidays always suck, but I can help someone else have a day that doesn’t suck.

I don’t celebrate Christmas because I find it to be complete bullshit, but that’s a whole other rant for my personal blog. I tried to give Hanukkah a whirl this year because I felt sort of like a mean old crank by not even trying for some holiday spirit. I have no money to cook any fabulous Hannukah food, so there goes my plans.

The hell with this. I just wasn’t meant to celebrate any winter holidays.

I wrote it last night. It’s a rant about how I got laid off yet again at the worst possible time of the year. Then I added my anger at how everyone seems to think the holiday is some sacred thing where nothing bad can ever happen to anyone, yet people die, people have no money, children are beaten and molested, people are thrown out of their homes, lives are thrown into turmoil; yes Virginia, even on Christmas. All those things have happened to me or in my family over the holidays since I’ve been alive. I also hate how the entire world shuts down for like two weeks surrounding the holiday.

The actual day, December 25, isn’t that bad actually. It’s just this whole stupid illusion surrounding the holiday that pisses me off.

To add

to the glory that is non-denominational gift exchange day, I watched Religulus (or however it’s spelled) tonight and spent a good hour and a half plus laughing about the Christianity aspect and it’s irony…so all in all it was a good day. Outside of that, I finally bought my gun safe (now that I have my 10-22 rifle and 9mm smith & wesson) and spent some money on stuff for driving my cab, so it’s been a decent enough day.

if it's any help

The US Census is hiring in advance of it’s 2010 Census, and pay starts at $22 per hour for the 8 week period (minimum). As someone who was unemployed for nearly half of 2008 (Feb – August, Oct-Mid December) I understand the broke thing. Just focus on getting your unemployment money from EDD and utilizing as many free services for the poor that SF offers (assuming you live in SF). If you land a job, hold onto it for dear life as any work is good work right now.

the holidays are a pain in the ass, but you have to remember that Christmas is for the kids. They love it, we’re not supposed to. The good thing is time off from work and seeing people you don’t see all year. The bad part is the expense and seeing people you don’t see all year. I actually have three days off in a row right now, and this is the first time I’ve had that since my summer vacations. So, even though I’m Jewish, merry christmas!!

Yeah. Christmas was terrible for me as a kid as well. Not because we were poor, but because my parents were always high/drunk/generally acting like assholes. Or like the year when my stepfather died suddenly and the bank foreclosed on our house in December. Or like every year where my brother got the shit beaten out of him or my stepfather tried to put his hands all over me when I was a preteen.

Christmas is for the kids, yep.

Someone explain the “eating Chinese on Christmas” thing. (Insert joke about my Chiese ex-gf being being my ex-gf because I’d only eat Chinese on Christmas joke here)

Is that a tradition that started because it was the only place that Jews could find open on Christmas day?

by Goofus on Dec 25, 2008 7:11 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Ha pretty good.

Well, My family actually started a “eat Chinese on Christmas Eve” thing because, yes, they’re just about the only thing that’s open (besides Denny’s). We used to go to this nice place in Rocklin before continuing to my grandparents house for Christmas. I think we just stopped wanting Chinese on Christmas Eve though so we stopped going.

My guess is

that when Jews first began assimilating themselves into America, the only other group of immigrants (in any large enough number) to America, (who were not Christian) were the Chinese. Thus the options on Christmas were stay at home, or go out for Chinese food. Now that’s changed as at least around here, I could be going for Indian, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, middle-eastern (most of the arab world, but also afghani and other similar options) food and options are awesome..

by homerdrew415 on Dec 26, 2008 10:56 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The way I look at it is this:

 - If God had known how good bacon was going to be when we figured out how to make it, He would have made it kosher.

 - God knows all, etc. etc. blah blah, so he did know to begin with, even if He acted like He didn’t, like He sometimes does or whatever.

Therefore:

 - God made bacon kosher. Whether He told us so or not.

Therefore:

 - We must all eat lots of bacon.

The interesting thing about this is that the final conclusion is logically true regardless of faith. So, whatever I am, everything’s coming up bacon!

Let me help you out

Here’s where God bans eating pig, amongst other animals:

“But among those that chew the cud or have divided hoofs, you shall not eat the following: the camel, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. The rock-badger, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. The hare, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. The pig, for even though it has divided hoofs and is cloven-footed, it does not chew the cud; it is unclean for you. Of their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch; they are unclean for you.”

“The rock-badger, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you. The hare, for even though it chews the cud, it does not have divided hoofs; it is unclean for you.”

Rock-badgers do not chew the cud. Neither do hares. God must know this, since He/She knows everything. So, this leaves us with three options:

1) God was messing with us.
2) God was drunk when he said this.
3) This part was added by people who claimed this is the word of God, but messed up.

In any case, you just found justification for ignoring this part of the bible.

No need to thank me.

P.S. Apologies for all of the people I’ve just offended.

Wow, what a bunch of haters

I love Christmas, and I am not religious at all. In fact, I’m really anti-religious.

I don’t particularity like holidays in general, but I do like Christmas. Yes, it’s commercialized, and I don’t like that. Yes – there is a lot of greed associated with it and sometimes buying presents can get out of hand.

But it’s a nice holiday, the meaning behind it is nice (if you ignore the whole Jesus bullshit). It’s basically a pagan winter celebration anyway, and I’m totally down with that.

I’m down to steal any cool holiday from any religion, and as such I’m 100% cool with Christmas.

Love Christmas. To make things easy, I tell people I’m a non-practicing Jew. That’s not really true (well, it’s kind of true in technical terms), but it gets people off my back when they can’t figure out what I am supposed to be if I’m not part of an organized faith and I’m also not athiest or agnostic, of which I am neither.

But I love Christmas. I recognize Hanukkah and used to celebrate it. My holidays are more traveling than they used to be, but it’s fun. Family, gifts, drinks, food… all good stuff. The schedule appears to be Home >> Girlfriend’s House >> Sister’s House >> Girlfriend’s House >> Home >> profit (I mean, literally, check out all these gift cards!).

It’s not religious or faith driven for me. It’s a big family celebration. And I think that’s cool.

jews have had an impact on xmas day

in days of yor…xmas day was the day for jews

you could go anywhere…the movies, disneyland or any other entertainment venue…and you, and your brethren would be the only ones there, as all christians spent their day in church and with family

no more

now christians do everything xmas eve and in the morning

which is why so many movies now open on xmas day

i want the day back

it used to be so cool showing up to an almost empty theater to see a first run movie….or going to a 3/4 empty disneyland and not having to stand in line to get on the e-ticket rides

christians need to find religion and give me back xmas day

thank you
