Absolutely, although I was thinking of rolling it into the final wrap up post. Anyone else is welcome to throw up a comparison at any time though.

Joaquin

John must really like Waldis Joaquin’s potential. I think the guy can throw up a storm (Sorry about how I put that.), but his proneness to injury makes me wonder a bit. Still, I have no problem with rewarding potential, since it is stars and superstars that make a winning team. But based on what I’ve read, it would seem to me that Rafael Rodriguez has a better chance of reaching his high potential than Joaquin does.

IMO score one for the McCoven.

John did place Luis Perdomo in the top 15 though. Given that several teams have been quoted as stating they would have drafted Perdomo had he been available, I would give the advantage to John on that one.

Perhaps if the whole McCoven thing had started later, Perdomo would have placed higher.

If Sergio Romo is eligible (and I think he is indeed still considered a rookie), we should have him on our list. To be honest, I’m a bit surprised he’s as low as #18 on John’s schedule.

I have to admit that I wasn’t even aware of Casilla, but I can see why John likes him. Only 19, a 1.59 ERA and a sparkling 19/1 K/BB ratio in the rookie league. Add on that he is a pronounced ground ball pitcher, and I have to admit to being caught with my pants down on this one (and believe me, that is an awful sight!).

Interesting that Henry Sosa’s essentially lost season didn’t hurt him too badly in either ranking. And Nick Noonan’s modest season certainly didn’t hurt HIM on the McCovey poll.

The thing with Romo..

And Sadler and Hinshaw is that they made the IP limits, but not the roster time limits. It all depends on how you’re looking at it.

I just can’t get behind Eddie Martinez-Esteve. He does seem to be improving his almost non-existent glove, but I didn’t see enough from him last season to overcome his huge propensity for injury. I’m not giving up on him, but his success doesn’t appear to me to be more likely than not.

Mike McBryde

Mike McBryde’s arm is supposed to be VERY special — perhaps to the point where the Giants might consider returning him to pitcher. As a hitter, it appears to me as if Mike needs to develop his strength. Nothing too wrong with his .295 batting average for San Jose, but he needed a .360 BABIP to achieve it.

For prospects, I’m not really a big fan of relievers that can’t strike out a batter an inning in the low minors. His control is obviously fantastic, which helps, but I just don’t really see much upside with him. If more people disagree, I’ll throw him on.

Yeah, Waldis probably should have gone a long time ago, but his performances have yet to line up very well with his scouting reports. He’s what, two years removed from TJ now? If he doesn’t break out in ‘09 then he’s probably just another Kelvin Pichardo.

Looking over Sickels list it occurred ot me that the one guy who I’m really much more intrigued to see play than any of the people still on our poll is Juan Carlos Perez. I understand why he’s not getting any mentions, but it’s interesting that we voted RafRod in at #8 and Perez (who at least has the American college experience) can’t even make our tester lists.

Oh, I voted for Joaquin btw.

I’d love to vote for Hector Sanchez, but I don’t think I can without some kind of scouting report. His numbers look good for his age. He’s just so far away I don’t feel comfortable trusting Dominican stats. Has anyone come across a scouting evaluation of him?

It’s probably down to McBryde, Joaquin and Casilla for me. (Can we get Casilla added to the list next round?) I haven’t decided yet.

I like McBryde’s on-base percentage, speed, defense and arm, but he’s a little on the old side and hasn’t shown much power. Might be a late bloomer.

Joaquin had good scouting reports heading into the year but an uneven statistical performance.

Casilla had great scouting reports but is so far away.

After Nicholson? Really?

Nicholson pitched well in rookie ball last year at age 22. Matos, just one year older, was shutting down AA (1.23 ERA, 0.98 WHIP) and got a big league cup of coffee. Other than the fact that we haven’t gotten to see his shortcomings up close, as we have with Matos, what does Nicholson have over him?

I haven’t really researched him, but Matos didn’t look too great to me when he came up. Perhaps he just wasn’t ready yet and will be later. Your point about how well he did in AA is well-taken.

I may be able to convince myself on Matos, but I have failed to do so thus far.

Depends on what you value the most..

If you want to give it to the person who has a 1% chance of contributing to a team with 1% of that chance being a superstar, or give it to the person who has a 50% chance of at least having a major league career, bouncing around with a few teams, and then retiring around 30.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:

by WalrusMan on Dec 25, 2008 6:30 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

But

when you’re down at 20 on the list nobody has a 50% chance of having a major league career, not even if you’re the deepest system in the game.

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

by Roger on Dec 25, 2008 10:36 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd disagree..

Looking at our list, only at #18 Joseph Martinez is on there. I’d say he’s got about a 75% chance of having a multiple year major league career like I mentioned. And although the Giants have a good system, they’re not right on top. A better system would have Martinez even lower.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."

by WalrusMan on Dec 25, 2008 10:59 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

75%?

I think 75% might be high for a multi-year career for Joseph Martinez. Martinez got righties out quite well last season, but he has never gotten lefties out in any season of his four-year minor league career.

He looks a little like a ROOGY to me. He does have control and is a ground ball pitcher, so he might not be limited to the ROOGY role. But he’ll be 26 next season, so he needs to develop fairly quickly.

by sharksrog on Dec 25, 2008 12:49 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I suppose it all depends on next season..

If in ST Sabean doesn’t bring in another starter then he and Pucetas are likely the two 5th starter candidates. Then you’ve got either Martinez starting in the bigs this year, or him being in AAA waiting for an injury. He’ll be up sometime in the year. I think if this happens then he’ll be in the majors for a few years, perhaps as the “6th starter” bouncing up and down from the minors to the majors, perhaps as the 5th starter, but then when he hits free agency he’ll go to a few other teams and be the 5th starter or 6th starter for them as well.

If in ST Sabean brings in another starter, then he and Pucetars are those “6th starters” in AAA and it depends on their performance who will be brought up.

The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."

by WalrusMan on Dec 25, 2008 1:03 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Someone else

I would be surprised if Brian Sabean doesn’t bring in another veteran pitcher, with Randy Johnson seeming to make sense.

I don’t think either Joe Martinez or Kevin Pucetas is ready. I do think that if Tim Alderson develops his change up over the winter, he could be close.

Martinez had a good season in 2008, but IIRC, lefties raked him for a .285 average. If AA lefties can hit him that well, what would make us think he could get major league left-handed hitters out?

Joe has NEVER gotten lefties out particularly well at any level of the minor leagues. And until last season, he really wasn’t all that great against righties, either. In 2008 though, he was quite good against them.

I keep seeing ROOGY. Between him and Cowart, the Giants should have the ROOGY market covered — at least at the AAA level.

by sharksrog on Dec 25, 2008 11:30 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow 75%

Is awfully, if not fantastically, optimistic. I’d agree he probably has a 75% chance of appearing in the majors, but a AA player with a 75% of a multiple year major league career is a super prospect.

Let’s do this. Not a comprehensive answer or study by any stretch, but a representative snapshot that gets us out of our own personal biases for our own prospects. I’ll look back to the oldest Prospect Handbook I have (2003) and look at all the 15-20 range prospects from only the top 10 ranked organizations and see what kinds of names I come up with.

1. Indians: Josh Bard, Dan Denham, Johnny Peralta, Travis Foley, Matt Whitney, Luis Garcia (note, also had Ben Broussard 23, Ryan Church 25 and Coco Crisp 26 that year).

2. Braves: Zach Miner, Jung Bong, Gregor Blanco, Dan Meyer, Trey Hodges, Ryan Langerhans (prospect list included Wainwright, Betemit, Marte, Franceour, Thorman, Horacio Ramirez, Kelly Johnson, Adam LaRoche, and way down at 28, Brian McCann).

3. Cubs: Alfredo Francisco, Steve Smyth, Billy Petrick, Matt Bruback, Ricky Nolasco, John Webb (led by Hee Seop Choi, the Cubs had been ranked #1 in 2002 and #2 in 2001, but with Pie the last of this group who still has any kind of career in front of him, this class has turned out to be quite a bust).

4. Twins: Brad Thomas, Sandy Tejada, Beau Kemp, Trent Oeltjen, Grant Balfour, Matt Vorwald (awesome group led by Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer, Resotvich, Denard Span and JD Durbin, but after 10 it’s pretty sparse with only Balfour and Juan Rincon 22 making an impact on the majors).

5. Angels: Jake Woods, Nathan Haynes, Robb Quinlan, Quan Cosby, Nick Touchstone, Brian Specht (that group is certainly not representative of a class that included KRod, Kotchman Bobby Jenks, Jeff Mathis, Ervin Santan, Joe Saunders, Brendan Donnelly and Derrick Turnbow in the top half and Eric Aybar 21 Alfredo Amezaga 22 Alberto callaspo 23 and Chone Figgins 28 in the bottom half)

6. Blue Jays: Dominic Rich, Miguel Negron, Chad Pleiness, DJ Hanson, Tyrell Godwin, Tracy Thorpe (the 20-30 range is just as faceless as this bunch and the top 10 includes more busts than hits, though Dustin McGowan, Jayson Werth, Alexis Rios, and Vinny Chulk are all int he Top 10).

7. Phillies: Carlos Cabrera, Erick Arteaga, Carlos Rodriguez, Brad Baisley, Eric Valent (there’s the kernel of a World Series Champion here with Utley 2, Hamels 5 Madson 6 and Howard 8, but you sure wouldn’t know it from looking at 10-30, thins out fast).

8. Marlins: Kevin Hooper, ABraham Nunez, Eric Reed, Victor Prieto, Robert Andino, Scott Olson (Olson’s a great #20, and Josh Willingham follows at #21, but on the whole this is another class with superstar talent at the top, Miggy, Adrian Gonzalez, Willis, Hermida that thins out fast)

9. Mariners: Kevin Olore, Michael Garciaparra, Kenny Kelly, Ryan Anderson, Jeff Heaverlo, JJ Putz (Putz is the only hit in the bottom 15)

10. Devil Rays: Gerardo Garcia, Pete LaForest, Delvin James, Elijah Dukes, Shawn Riggans, Matt White (class is led off by Baldelli, Hamilton, and BJ Upton, just imagine if Baldelli stayed healthy and Hamilton stayed clean, what an OF).

11. Giants, just cuz: Merkin Valdez, Noah Lowry, Jason Ellison, Carlos Valderrama, David Cash, Dan Ortmeier (is it just because I’m so familiar with them that I instantly think this is the best group I’ve named so far? This was the classic class of lost potential, headed by Foppert, Ainsworht, Jerome Williams, Francisco Liriano and Todd Linden).

Interestingly, with the major exception of the Cubs and to a lesser degree the Blue Jays, the notable thing about these organizations looking back is that they were in fact ranked pretty well. The Indians, Braves, Twins, and Angels had tons of prospects who would turn into major leaguers and help lead them to conteder status, the Rays and Phillies had some pennant winning talent.

Still, the lower teens is much more hit than miss. The final tallies, of this range in the best organizations in the game, circa 2003. Out of 66 players:

12 established major leaguers (to err on the conservative side I included Gregor Blanco and Elijah Dukes in this list)

16 appeared in the majors but were unable to establish themselves there (eg Jake Woods, Abraham Nunez, Eric Reed, Robert Andino, Jung Bong, etc)

8 have never appeared in the majors but are still plugging away in the minors

36 are out of American professional baseball. Of those 36, 30 never appeared in the major leagues (some overlap with the cup of coffee group here).

Those numbers, frankly do strike me as fairly representative of the futures that await people in this area of a good organization’s prospect list. More than half will be out of baseball in a few years, about a third will plug away as career minor leaguers with an occasional Crash Davis like trip to the show, about a fifth or a sixth become major leaguers (with the majority of these being bullpen pitchers and bench players).

Get the hell out the way Bengie, Pablito's hit the show!

by Roger on Dec 26, 2008 10:58 AM PST up reply actions   0 recs

50%

If a player has a 50% chance of having a major league career, I would think he would rank in the top 10 in most systems.

I thought the Giants made good choices when they drafted Roger Kieschnick third and Brandon Crawford fourth, but do either of those two have 50% chances at a major league career? I’m not sure whether I’d take the over or the under on that one.

I like where the McCoven have placed the pair (at #8 and #14, respectively), but the ultra-conservative John Sickels doesn’t even have either in his top 20. Still, one could argue that even at #8 and #14, those guys might not have a 50% shot at a big-league career.

by sharksrog on Dec 25, 2008 1:00 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Obviously

Obviously if player has only a one in a hundred chance of contributing and only one in 10,000 of being a superstar, the player with a 50% chance of having a major league career of some duration is more valuable.

When the comparison becomes more realistic, the decision becomes harder. Where it is close, I would lean toward the potential star or superstar, since those are the guys who win championships if they have decent complementary players around them.
