Yanks to sign Tex
ESPN just reported it, too, so I doubt it's bs. 8 years, 180 mil. How can the Yankees do this and their fans still argue they're not buying the friggin league? That's $423 million freaking dollars spent this offseason for the Yanks. That's why we hate em. :)

Are you not happy the Giants are almost good again?
They’re within one or two years of competing again. Times aren’t so desolate for us anymore; they were in 06 and 07, but not so much this year and hopefully not next. But it’s fun to watch the Steinbrenners constantly try to buy the best FA’s on the market EVERY YEAR, and it doesn’t work. It’s funny because any other team would do waaaay better than the Yankees if they had their payroll. It’s also fun to watch their assclown fans shit their pants because AHHHH WE DIDNT WIN THE WS THIS YEAR!!!! BEING A FAN OF SUCH A GOOD TEAM IS SOOOO HARDDDDD!!!!!
Yes, when a team with a 1/3 of their payroll beats them in the playoffs

So the Blue Jays get the Yankees third rounder for losing AJ Burnett.

The rumor is that The Yanks will try to unload Matsui so they could DH Damon. This move leads me to believe they want to unload Matsui and pick up a true CF, in the same deal if possible. I think likely targets are Arizona and Milwaukee to pick up a CF. Arizona because they desperately want to be rid of Byrnes contract. the potential OF would be Swisher in LF, mystery CF and Nady in RF

He’s making 14 mil right? Nobody wants that kind of contract at his age. Maybe we could pry Nady from them?
Nady could happen, but from our side i’d try to send Rowand over. I can see the Yanks taking on some more salary, especially if it is for a player who is leagure average defensively in CF and league average offensively. I’d like to see Nady for Rowand and Pucetas maybe

good lord
that’s a loaded lineup. Nady would be hitting cleanup for us. The rotation’s a little thin on the end, though. They need Chamberlain, Wang, and Burnett to all stay healthy. One of them’s bound to go down, and they have no depth to replace any of them. And they’ll also need a breakout year from Phil Hughes. This team looks like it could turn into this year’s Tigers to me.
I concur. I thought the Tigers line-up was great, and then it never materialized. Hopefully the new NY stadium is a hitter’s dream, that way their new pitchers will get lit up.

Are you crazy?
They’d never take him. Why would they ever want a contract that small?
The universe would probably implode
It’s not possible to commit so much money to so many guys in one offseason.
Less arm, more talk. Raisingcain is a GAMER.
Adopted Giant: Henry Sosa
with that lineup they don’t need a break out year from Phil Hughes. They just need him to pitch like a fifth starter.
Chamberlin’s pretty good too.
Yeah, I think the rotation looks fine. Plus they’ve got a couple of guys like Ian Kennedy would could eat some back of the rotation innings.
/deer head
Bay City Ball
They don't at the moment
but what about when Burnett makes his weekly trip to the DL? Wang was out most of the year himself. Same with Chamberlain. Can you really count on them all to stay healthy?
Burnett has started 32, 21, 25, and 34 games over the past four years. He’s not an IRON MAN but he’ll give the Yankees 20+ starts a season.
/deer head
Bay City Ball
who else could that be said about?
I can only really think of the Red Sox with Josh Beckett, but they were deep enough in pitching so it didn’t matter.
he's been significantly injured once
he’s not the injury risk Burnett is
exactly
How does it make sense to group Sanchez, who has been in the league for a year, with a guy who has been in the league for 10 and has only topped 30 starts in a season twice. Burnett also missed all of 03’ with TJ surgery. Is it fair to call Sanchez that fragile so early on in his career?
well yeah but he's pretty much out of our rotation now
even Sabean doesn’t count him as a part of the team.
Of the RS starters last season,
only Jon Lester had more than 200 IP.
And what is the RS depth? Lester, Beckett, Matsuzaka, Wakefield, Bucholz, Masterson? The RS have question marks in their rotation too. Signing Sabathia would have made sense for them.
ZIPS: Milledge: 466 HR, 485 2B, 2282 hits, 278-379-524
I’d still take the sox rotation over the next 3 years. 3 youngs kids with great stuff in the rotation, a workhorse (matsuzaka) and an up and down veteran with overpowering stuff (beckett).

arent the Sox interested in Byrnes? seems like theyd have the cash to use him as a 4th OF now. Seems like Byrnes would be a pretty bad CF. Theyre better off not forcing Milwaukee to take Wang back and just swapping Cabrera for Cameron to get some D in that OF. That also forces Swish to a sort of utility role filling in at all 3 OF spots, 1B and DH. I’m jealous.
They were going to swap Byrnes for Lugo.

that is still no giant-killing offense (no pun intended)
Damon, Matsui, and Posada are all about done. Jeter’s on the downside of his career, and Cano, Swisher, & Nady are all OK-to-average. And while A-Rod is certainly one of the best hitters, he certainly hasn’t done anything in the postseason.
I’m very interested to see if CC will return to his “above average” pitcher status as an AL pitcher rather than the “dominant” status in the NL. Burnett is very injury-prone, Huges looked bad last year, and Joba is a 5-inning pitcher.
I wouldn’t be shocked if they failed to make the playoffs again next year.

why lol?
I know you guys heavily discount the media’s “clutch” theories, but he has made it to the playoffs a number of times, and suddenly can’t hit. Do you think it’s a coincidence? Is it impossible to think that he chokes under pressure, or struggles against the better pitchers that he faces in the playoffs?
Would I want A-Rod? Sure. But I do think it’s worth considering that he tends to struggle in the playoffs when you discuss the team being able to make it through the playoffs.
And after looking at Damon’s stats, I stand corrected, he had a solid year last year. I guess him being a pretty average player over his career and being closer to 40 than 30 played a factor in my assumption. I don’t see him matching last years’ stats, FWIW

Many? Arod had exactly two unsuccessful posteasons – 2005 and 2006. He was OK in 2007, and really good in 2004, 2000, and 1997.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
I guess it depends what you consider unsuccessful
For someone making over $20 million, I would expect something more than these lines:
2004: .258/.378/.516 in the ALCS (did do well in the ALDS, though)
2007: .267/.353/.467
For me, that’s a count of 4 unsuccessful and 2 successful. He did do better than I thought, though, earlier in his career, which would further add to the idea that he crumpled under the pressure of the NY expectations and being a $20+ million man.

Baseball’s not like clockwork, you know. You can’t just go out and automatically hit .300 in a short series, even if you’re really, really good.
but it’s not like he’s out of baseball for months, picks up on a short series, and is expected to hit over .300 out of the blue. The playoffs are a continuation of a 165 game season, and I think it’s reasonable to expect a person making that much money and having that much talent to continue to hit as he has during the season, which you would expect to be over .300. I realize that a short series gives a small sample size for figuring averages, but putting it over his career, he’s a sub-.300 hitter in the playoffs, which I would consider unsuccessful, especially since he should have been hitting his prime in NY.
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
by UnleashTheGore on Dec 24, 2008 9:16 AM PST up reply actions
If picked out random 150s worth of at-bats from the best hitters in the history of baseball you would find quite a few that look like that or worse. I just don’t understand the bit where just because he’s a good hitter makes it a mortal lock to put up superman numbers in the postseason, and a huge disappointment if he doesn’t. Baseball just doesn’t work that way.
Look at it this way.
If he had 4 more hits, he would be hitting his career regular season average. That’s one extra hit every 2.5 post season serieses. Say he goes all Barry Bonds 2002 Word Series on the next post season series he’s in and the Yankees lose it. He’d then be batting .299 for the playoffs. It all just depends on one series.
The Basil Fawlty Moderating Strategy:
"We could run a nice blog here if we didn't have all these members getting in the way."
That first line is really good actually. The second one’s is definitely below average for him, but still pretty good. And, again, it’s 150 AB’s. Funky stuff happen in such a small sample size. Mike Schmidt is career .236/.304/.386 in the postseason. Diamggio hit 271/.338/.422 in 200 postseason AB’s. Mays was in the WS 4 times, and never slugged over .357. You’d never hear anyone call any of these guys unclutch.
..so allow me to present Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain as two sweet, sweet bottles of warming hooch.
In A-Rod’s post season career he’s hit:
.279/.361/.483
That’s not bad and not that far from his career line of: .306/.389/.578. His post season numbers have also come in like 147 AB’s. That’s very big.
/deer head

thats better than what I had thought he had done
but still…when you pay someone $25 million, I’d expect something better than that, especially with talented hitters all around him.

140 and 142 ERA+
seasons in the AL, is “above average”
Damon’s OPS+ last 3 seasons: 115, 97, 118. He’s still fairly athletic. That’s hardly “all about done”.
Sure the Yankees have their issues. But most teams do. The RS have issues too. Ortiz is coming off an injury riddled season, the worst season of his career in a long time. Will he rebound, or was that the start of a decline? Beckett is basically Burnett. Very talented, but injury prone and inconsistent. Bucholz looked bad in 2008. It’s questionable if Matsuzaka can sustain that ERA with the number of walks he gives up. Despite his shiny ERA, Masterson has questions about his stuff.

Boston has some nice songs, and for a first album they’re great. Perhaps I’d allow Nickelback a first album as well. But as Boston went on (and as Nickelback has gone on) they’re corporate made rock.

Very smart signing for the Yankees. There were only two top bats in FA this winter. The Red Sox would only be interested in signing Teixeira. So rather than let Sox sign Tex and then the Yankees counter by signing Ramirez the Yankees strike right at the weakness of the Sox and the Yankees sign Tex. This leaves the Sox without a matching transaction.
The move probably means that Manny will end up back with the Dodgers. No way the Red Sox want him back.

The Yankee Fans Can Have Him
Yankee tickets will cost up to $2,500 a game during the regular season. Not a joke.
They’re spending $70.25 mil on three players in 2009. I could care less about the Yankees and their ridiculous spending, except that they cried poor and asked the city of New York for $350 million in public funds for their new stadium in June. There was a big legal to-do about this in October, but I haven’t heard much of it since.
Now that’s some bullshit right there if you ask me.

All I have to say is
So much fo the mystique of the Yankees…
As hard as it is to believe, at one point people wanted to play there for more than just money.
Now, it seems like they can only draw interest by paying out the wazoooooo!
Why else do players go to the Yankees now other than to be ridiculously overpaid?!
By players actually wanting to stay with a franchise...
Or the franchise paying the same-ish amount of money.
Or having good, young, and cheap players that would attract the free agent to a winning team.
Or just not liking New York.
Or staying close to home.
Or their children.
Or not wanting New York style pressure.

Buster Olney is now reporting that Mark Teixera is signing with Yankees, for a buttload of money (8/$180m):
http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3790141
Somewhat surprising, but since he wasn’t going to sign with the Giants and didn’t sign in the division, I’m not really all that emotionally invested in this result. However, I do think it’s time to think again about what the Giants could do with Benjie Molina. When it was assumed that Teix would sign with the Red Sox, a lot of people suggested a Molina for Lowell plus one deal that would get the Red Sox a catcher and some salary relief, while allowing them to move Youkilis to third full-time. Seems pretty likely that that trade won’t be happening now.
My thought is this: is there an equivalent trade that could be worked out with the Yankees. Like Boston, New York still doesn’t have a catcher (they were signaling that they want Posada to DH) and they now have a glut of 1b/of/dh types. Matsui, Swisher, Posada, Damon, Nady and Teix, who is untouchable. Most of those are pretty unappealing to me because they are old, expensive and don’t play good defense. But would people around here be willing to do a Molina for Swisher plus a pitching prospect deal? Molina and Winn for Hughes plus a contract such as Damon or Matsui? What might it take, in addition to Molina, to get Nady?
And thus concludes my first attempt at public rosterbation.
You can fit 180 million dollars in your butt?
Section 314 FTW!
by KingofDucks1987 on Dec 23, 2008 3:57 PM PST up reply actions
I was wondering where this went. Just wondered if people thought a potential trade with the Yankees would make any sense at all. Not advocating anything myself, really.
I think that it a midseason trade for Molina and or Winn to NY is very possible, but it would be for prospects, not someone who is an established major leaguer.
I’d have to agree. The only (reasonably priced) guy with much MLB experience that I can see Sabean wanting is Hughes and I foresee that taking both Winn and Molina. The other guys – Swisher and Nady – are unappealing, but for different reasons. Swisher hasn’t become the hitter the A’s expected and Nady is older and injury-prone.
Yankees' bounty could aid Giants
From Chris Haft at MLB.com.
If the New York Yankees’ signing of free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira prompts them to make a trade, the Giants could be the beneficiaries.
The New York Post speculated that the Yankees might entertain trading Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Xavier Nady and Nick Swisher to trim the payroll slightly and thin the crowd at first base, the corner outfield spots and at designated hitter. Among this quartet, the Giants, who are searching for an offensively proven corner infielder, could be intrigued by either Nady or Swisher.
I just puked a little:
Nady, 30, has the intangibles the Giants would love. He was born in Carmel, graduated from Salinas High School and attended Cal-Berkeley, where he broke school records for home runs and RBIs.

In fairness injuries with to their rotation, the loss of AJ their one calling card in that division is pretty much beat up for 09.
Their "O" was pretty thin as well considering the talent they had in ’08. If there is a team that is makes sense to do what the White Sox did in ’97 ( or what Beane does with the A’s every 3 years or so) The Jay’s would seem to be that team to me for ’09. Add to that they need earn from their local market in this economy over $6 at the gate to get what is $5 for every other team in the league. The only mitigating factor I can think of is their Gm is in the last 2 years in his contract.
