Pablo Sandoval / Jesus Guzman
At this point, in the Venezuelan winter league, those two kids are competing against to each other for the ROY and MVP awards for that league.
What they are doing is simply phenomenal. Pablo Sandoval broke the record for most home runs by a rookie in a single season and Jesus Guzman is killing the baseball having one of the most complete season ever by any player in that league, he's withing the bests in all the offensive categories not mentioning that he's had two grand slams, hit for the cycle, had an game with 8 rbis, a walk off homer and 8 consecutive hits at one point of the season and chasing the record for most rbis in a single season.
You might say " it's a weaker league"..don't get fooled, a lot of MLB players are there right now, it's an exciting league with passionate fans, a lot of pressure and pride involved, specially for the teams they play for witch is the big rivalry.
People have been expecting that kind of offensive explosion from those two kids and it's getting there, the ultimate goal, show that potential and develop it in the big show. They will go together to the spring training and won't be a surprise to see them playing with the Giants and doing some damage.
Brilliant careers awaits for them.

Pablito clavo un clavito
Glad to see Pablito clavoing. The brother sure can hack. And can play some 3b.
Word is Jesus will not be coming to San Francisco. But we all knew that. Heathens. Word is he will be taken in the Rule 5 draft on December 7.

Jesus Guzman
Good chance he gets taken, not so good chance he sticks on a 25 man roster. My bet is that he will be returned to us at the end of Spring Training.

Edgar Alfonzo?
Is that a typo or is Edgar Alfonzo actually hitting that.

Eliezer Alfonzo
Alfonzo is also having a good season but he got hurt although nothing to be worry about.
Quite honest, I don’t se Alfonzo playing regularly in the big leagues, I do see Pablo Sandoval wit a nice carreer with San Francisco, he knows how to hit, some people compare him and actually calls him “Big Papi Jr” ‘cause he’s smaller, but he sure knows how to hit for power and BA. The only thing that I see following these two guys is that Pablo has to learn to be more patience specially with the fastball up in the middle, but he’ll correct and work on that, order than that, there’s no other weak zone for him, Guzman is just a hitting machine with ocasionally power but most important, he ’s a cluth hitter and loves big moments.
Another guy who is having a nice season is Jose castillo who plays with Guzman and Vizquel for the same team (Caracas Lions)

Ok, color me confused
Setting aside the fact that Jesus Guzman isn’t particularly a kid (next year will be his age 25 season), is he not still in the A’s system? He certainly was during the 2008 season (split between Midland and Sacramento IIRC).

I think he signed with us as a minor league free agent. Most think he’ll get picked up during the Rule 5 Draft.

I hope he doesn’t get taken via Rule 5 since I adopted him and the nickname I gave him wouldn’t work with other teams.

If we draft Guzman with our Rule 5 pick
can we just return him to ourselves if he doesn’t make the 25 man roster?
I guess if we were going to go to all that trouble we would have protected him on the 40 man to begin with. But is it legal?
by Goat on Dec 2, 2008 5:24 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
In 1988, the Braves drafted a player from themselves. They neglected to protect righthander Ben Rivera on the 40-man roster, had the first pick in the draft and took him.

I don’t know. I don’t really want to give us the 25,000 dollars. Money’s a little tight right now.

You jinxed them!!
they both went hitless tonight because of your post. (0 for 3) Sandoval got a walk though, and has now walked 5 times in his last 10 games. Is he being more patient, or are these walks intentional??

Anyone have a link..
of our signing of Guzman? I remember seeing some link of some A’s blog or something saying we signed him, but does anybody have something official from like mlb.com or the giants website, or a newspaper.
because rotoworld still has him on the A’s, and his mlb.com profile has his ‘parent club’ as oakland too.

Walks
They both went hitless because it was a tight game until the seventh, it was a pitching duel, however I’ve seen that the are being pitched different. More careful and they are not seeing anything good to hit
Regarding if Guzman is a Giant, He said it himself in an interview when he was signed

Could Guzman be the next Cantu? Are they at all similar?
I can haz homerunz!
by jbowl on Dec 3, 2008 11:35 AM PST reply actions 0 recs
Pretty hard to say. When Cantu was Guzman’s age, he was already in his 3rd major league season, having played roughly 250 games. He’d even received an MVP vote. And this despite having his development having hit a massive three year detour in the Southern League, where he performed pretty terribly from ages 19-21. But the next year in AAA he suddenly found his power stroke.
In this Guzman is something like Cantu. He too struggled through a couple of pretty bad AA campaigns (in the Texas League for him), and then the next year suddenly blossomed as a power hitter. The big difference was that Guzman blossomed after being sent down and repeating A+ ball, and consequently his two best seasons have come a) when he was old for his league (23 in A+ and 24 in AA) and b) when he was repeating levels (his second shot at A ball, his third at AA).
Taking age completely out of the picture, there is some similarity to their progression stats wise and Guzman could certainly be a late blooming power hitter of value, but that is a pretty big element to take completely out of the picture.
