MLB Channel Comcast 412

I know this channel doesn't "officially" go live until Jan 1, but it is already on my cable menu. I have Comcast and I am located in the east bay, so you cable-having folks form around these parts might want to check it out.

Right now, they are showing highlights from the '05 World Series. I have no idea if this is temporary/introductory type of thing or if they are going to be showing highlights until the official launch.

Satisfy your baseball watching jones immediately...and by all means, have some pie while doing so.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I have it too right now in the City

Its just playing elevator music and showing trivia…very funkadelic.

I can’t wait till it goes live though…they are the last of the big four sports to have their own channel so hopefully they learned a thing or two from the other channels.

They control distribution by zip code, phone number, and GPS cooridinates. It is why you have to hook up your phone when you do the install.

I remember when my cat of 13 years died – that was a sad sad day – even Mr. Merope was teary eyed, I still get sad when I think about it. Our sympathies to you, and bgunn is right, when you are ready, there are lots of shelter kitties looking for a home, especially with all the people being foreclosed on – pets often get left behind.

It’s sad and I know I’ll miss him and love him forever. He was part of the family. Heck, I have a picture of him as my phone wallpaper. I’m glad I have that, because it was when he was healthy, robust, and still a really handsome guy. Towards the end he was so skinny and he just looked like he wanted to give up. I can’t just erase that image but I can remember him as a happy kitty more.

We had the same thing happen about four years ago. Mrs. NVSFG had this cat when we got married. He lived till he was 21. He’d been hit by cars, attacked by a coyote, and numerous other adventures. He came from the pound in Oakland. We called him “Ghetto Kitty”. Every time we got transferred or moved, he would run away for a week or so, but he always came back..

He was part of the family. We still have pictures around the house, and he has a dish under the apple tree where he used to sleep on summer days.

My condolences. We made it about a month before we went to the pound up here and another cat “picked” us to take him home.

I watched a classic film I’d never seen before last night: Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

It’s from 1961 (so it’s as old as me), stars Audrey Hepburn, and—by today’s
standards—is so odd visually and in it’s pacing that I know all you film lovers
(and fans of Mad Men—it’s NY in the same smoke and booze-filled era) will
dig it. The song Moon River is brilliantly used throughout the film as well.

The reason I bring it up in the cat part of this thread is the cat (named Cat) is
a big part of the film. I know you catlovers will dig it.

Buddy was 16 and he was suffering from cancer. He didn’t really suffer until last night. At least he died on his own terms, and I did get to see him and pet him before he went. If he’d passed when I was at work I don’t even know. It was awful to see him dying and then cold and stiff when he died, but I’d rather just be there for him.

As for the other topic, Baron I’m sorry about your cat. I have a similar situation coming to a head soon, my cocker spaniel. He goes through bad spells and then perks up, this will probably be that last holidays together for us. I have made appoints with the vet but I never show up, it always ends in a crying jag. So a friend of mine has given me a number for a vet that makes house calls, they take the pet and bring back the ashes if you want them. Probably won’t be making that call either, my sister will probably come over to do that.

Schedule for Jan.

http://www.mlb.com/network/schedule/

Check the above for the schedule for the next month. Seems to be a variety of stuff but a lot repeats throughout the day. There is a lot of Red Sox and Yankees (they are starting with a Hot Stove league show then at 4PM show the Don Larson Perfect game in the World Series) but they are showing every 2008 World Series game, a lot MLB films, televising the live Hall of Fame results, something called Prime 9 – which is a top 9 countdown of various subjects (CFers, home runs, etc), Hot Stove league program. I know they are televising some World Baseball Classic games. Once a week live baseball during the season.

Nothing really Giants except for the 2002 World Series Highlights, a feature on 1986 (Will Clark) and various Home Run Derby shows (2007 from ATT Park).

the Don Larsen perfect game in 50 years (they just recently found the film of the game in some guy’s attic). That’s not really Yankee-centric per se, unless you hate the Red Sox and Yankees so much that it’s basically blinded you to baseball history.

I would like to hear a few other options in your mind that would be able to deliver the qualities that I believe Reynolds would deliver.

First, I reject the premise that it MUST be an ex-player

If I were hiring, I would remain focused that I’m trying to put the best baseball talker on the air, and that might or might not be a former player. No law says it has to be a former player. A former player CAN certainly bring some extra insights, but those players are plentiful and available for color commentary. First and foremost, I would want a broadcaster as the anchor/host. Then we can bring in a rotating stable of former players for sidekick and color duties.

Of that type of tv personality, I don’t know who is available or interested or even qualified. A younger Jon Miller type, a younger Bob Costas type, and probably a dozen regional personalities that we just don’t know about.

Obviously, all this is subjective. I do find Harold boring, inarticulate, shallow, and has the McCarver/Sutcliffe tic of stressing and straining so hard to make a point that he doesn’t realize is obvious to others. You don’t. C’est la jouet.

My point was that since he is an ex-player, he has the insight of knowing what goes on behind the scenes, in the club house, on the field, player-coach discussions, and everything else that most non-former players would lack and could only guess and speculate at.

TBS used him because they realized that he was liked by the masses, so they jumped at the opportunity to use him in the payoffs, just like MLBTV is doing now.

I definately do not think that Reynolds should be the lead anchor, just a color commentator.

You are right, this is all subjective, and everyones feelings will be different on the matter. If this MLB channel is anything like the NFL Network, they will have a rotating cast of commentators.

But we can at least agree that McCarver would ruin this channel like he ruins the playoffs every year.

I also forgot to mention that im sure that MLBTV wanted him because of his experience and recognizable face.

IMHO, Reynolds was the only tolerable member of Baseball Tonight when he was still on it.

In my eyes, TIno Martinez was or is(not sure if he comes on it anymore) the absolute worst. He had that little shit-grin smile that I just wanted to slap off his face.

I watched a brief thing on the preview, where Harold and Hazel Mae introduced the network and gave a little tour of the studios. I wasn’t as annoyed by Ms. Mae as I expected. She still looks like she’s been Botoxed to hell and back, but she’s okay. At least from the little blurb I saw.

I’ve seen her a bunch when she used to be on NESN (The Red Sox local cable channel). She was not completely horrible.

It could have been worse. We could have ended up with Suzyn Waldman!

Do you have to pay for this on Comcast?

I ask this because I checked my mother’s TV. She has Comcast Digital Starter Package and MLB Channel 412 (she lives in SF like I do) wasn’t open.

It still isn’t available on Directv but I know I’ll get it because I get NFL and NHL Networks with my DTV pack (and I pay $15 less then my mother does with about 50 or so more channels).

A McC newcomer but not outstanding.

I was wondering if it’s on the NFL Network/NBA TV package with Comcast. That’s $5 more a month.

This channel is available on Directv for no extra charge. My mother’s television was still scrambled so she would have to pay extra if she wanted it.

The Larsen perfect game was interesting. No first inning was shown as the video seemed to have been lost. Game was hosted by Bob Costas with guests Yogi Berra and Don Larsen at the MLB Network studios. Giants link for this game as both starters played for the Giants. Sal Maglie played for the NY Giants and Larsen played for the SF Giants.

A McC newcomer but not outstanding.

I have been watching this today as well. Seems like a cool channel. I am interested to see if they will have a Minor League Report every night once the season start.
