Giants interested in Kawakami
I'm not so sure about this one, Kawakami at 3 / 21 or RJ at 1 / 8? I'd rather us not get involved with another over 30 multiyear deal for a starter. Especially with the young guns coming up.
I'll give you an OT topic,

I was really confused by this before I clicked on the link. Kawakami must have a different knee-jerk meaning for me than it does for you. In fact, my association with the name puts the second word in the hyphenate “knee-jerk.”

I bet that last sentence sounded a lot snappier in your head than it actually reads.

No, it sounded a lot snappier when Mike Myers said it on SNL.

Nah, it sounded pretty awkward from the get-go. But then I was like, “why should I try again?” and rolled with it.

I apologize, I haven’t had an original thought since 1999.

I’d pass. It doesn’t sound like his stuff is that great. Keith Law compared him to Kei Igawa.
I’d keep an open mind, though, if the Giants scouting/pitching brain trust really likes him.

Yeah, aside from the contract that shall not be named, they seem to have done a pretty good job evaluating pitching prospects/veterans of late.

I'm not that interested in Kawakami if he wants three years
but I do think the Giants should get more involved in scouting Japan and the rest of Asia. The Red Sox have invested heavily in the Japanese market and it has paid tremendous dividends to their pitching staff. Can you imagine if the Giants has signed Matsuzaka instead of Zito??? Getting involved in the Japanese market isn’t just good baseball, it’s good business. I was in Japan last year during the World Series and it was easier to find a Red Sox jersey than one for a Japanese team.
The Giants need to start paying more attention to the talent available not just in Japan, but in the up and coming baseball markets in Asia like Korea, Taiwan, China, and even India. If we could cement ourselves in these countries now we will have a huge head start on a potentially vast source of new talent.
The Giants should be applauded for their aggressive scouting in Latin America. However, they need to stop ignoring Japan and the rest of Asia.

Lots more Asians.

Often.

And the continent of Africa.

India would require a huge investment, considering it has pretty much no baseball experience. Otherwise, I agree.

Yes, I know, entirely different game. But at least the bat + ball concept isn’t completely foreign.

China is still pretty safe to ignore.
by oldjacket on Dec 17, 2008 10:44 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yes, baseball is still in its infancy in China (even infancy seems too advanced to describe the stage they are at right now…how about pregnancy?), but to me that seems like the best time to get involved. If the Giants helped promote and encourage the growth of baseball in China now our influence would be firmly cemented by the time it started producing quality players. China participated in the Olympics and the WBC, the Dodgers played Spring Training games there last year, it’s only a matter of time until they have professional baseball in China. We should get in now while the competition is minimal.
Obviously we should pay the most attention to Japan and then Korea and Taiwan, but we shouldn’t rule out China or to a lessor degree India. The Pirates signed two Indian pitchers recently, whether that have any success or not is still in the air, but it shows that the potential does exist out there.

Really?
So Matsuzaka and Okajima are heavy investments in the Japanese market? Because that’s the two Japanese players they had on their roster last year.
I’m not sure i would have wanted to put in 100+ million for a player who hadn’t thrown a pitch in the major leagues before either.

Yes those are heavy investments
Matsuzaka is an ultra-uber celebrity in Japan. The entire country is obsessed with him. I was in Japan last year during the World Series. The Japan Series was also going on at that time, but nobody seemed to care about it. The games that Daisuke pitched were televised nationally and were on in every bar, restaurant, coffee shop, electronics store…anywhere with a TV. There were signs posted everywhere with his picture and some words of encouragement. You could buy Red Sox apparel pretty much anywhere you went. It was insane. By signing him (and paying 50 million for the rights to sign him) the Red Sox cemented a sphere of influence that will be very hard to break. Did you read why Tazawa chose to sign with the Red Sox instead of the Rangers?
“The Red Sox signed their third pitcher from Japan on Thursday, adding right-handed amateur Junichi Tazawa to an organization that already included Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima. Tazawa said he spoke to his countrymen before signing the $3.3 million, three-year deal and was impressed with the way the organization had helped them acclimate to the United States.”
Here’s Theo Epstein’s comment on it:
"We certainly hoped and considered the fact that signing Daisuke would allow us to establish a heightened presence in Japan and around the world, and that someday there might be some ancillary benefits."
Obviously it worked. Sabean chose to throw away 120 million on someone who had thrown lots of pitches in the major leagues. How did that turn out?
Sometimes gambles pay off and sometimes seemingly good choices become total busts. Kudos to the Red Sox for taking smart risks, I hope it’s something the Giants can learn to do as well. It’s not going to work in every case (ask the Cubs) but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the market over there.
