Matt Downs
Plays all over, but his numbers so far seem to show he can hit enough that he could stick at a number of those positions. No rush. Jesus may be get called up this year on his one year contract, but Downs will be around in 2010 and beyond. There will be a spot for him. It may be utility bench guy, but there will be a spot.

Definitely not Downs. Why is everyone so excited about a 24-year-old who hits like a utility infielder? Are those really so valuable? His numbers aren’t great once you take the air out of ’em by adjusting for the California League hitting environment.

Saying Downs hits like a utility infielder is too harsh. He was one of the best hitters in the Cal League last year despite playing in the league’s toughest park.
Unfortunately, he seems to be a utility infielder. If he could play a good second base I would have some hope for him as a late bloomer, but no one seems impressed by his glove at all.

i think he could hot like a utility infielder in the majors. in SJ he’s seems like a legit slugger.
on the other hand I graded him because i thought his versatility was a plus. Evan is talking like his defense at 2nd is poor.

i see your point. he’s a guy that may not have quite the range for second, or the arm for third. still I like him, with his flaws for the 19-20th spot on the list. I’d be easier just to give the players a letter grade a la Sickels. That would better represent the ties.

I agree. I don’t think it is that his defense is poor. I think the primary reason that he gets moved around so often is that they want his bat on the field. His defense is not his strongest asset, but seems to be acceptable enough to place him in multiple IF positions. Trying to find a position for his bat at the MLB level.
Downs was drafted by the D’Backs in 2003 as a pitcher, but chose to transfer to Alabama. Remember, Downs was a JC pitcher when he transferred to Alabama in Fall 2004. In 2005, he was shifted to a utility IF/Pitcher status. He was 23 years old when he graduated college and was drafted. In 2006 his line at Alabama was .298/..388/.460/.848 with 7 HR’s in 252 AB’s.
Including his Rookie league games, he has played 250 profesional baseball games from short season A to AAA in a just over three years.
His total professional line is .299/.360/.473/.832 in 978 AB’s. These numbers include his short stint at Fresno last year where his line was .244/.298/.407/.705 with 3 HR’s in 86 AB’s in 22 games.

Guzman
I’ve been trying to figure out where to put Guzman in the list since we signed him. Sickels has him as the 25th ranked prospect in the A’s system (Sickels listed 26 players in a top 20 list as he feels the A’s are that deep). That along with his record-breaking RBI performance in the VWL, makes me think he should be in the Giants top 20. He probably is not ready to compete for a major league job and that’s probably why he didn’t get protected or chosen in the Rule 5 draft. So, I think he beats Rohlinger out for the Fresno third base job or maybe shares second and third with Rohlinger and someone else (Downs, Burris?) in Fresno.

Is anyone else un-impressed with Matos’ stuff? His fastball seems to be around 92mph and the slider didn’t have great movement when I saw it. He just looked so average, useful in middle innings, but I can’t see him being a high leveraged reliever yet. He’s had success in the minors, but his pitch stuff didn’t wow me like his numbers have.

I wasn’t impressed either. He wasn’t bad, but he definitely did not impress as much as Romo and Hinshaw. If we are speaking of relievers, I think Pichardo is probably a better prospect. He has a mid to high 90’s fastball and had good stats at Connecticut. He was a bit rough in the Arizona Fall League though (as was Matos).

Here’s my pitch for Thomas Neal. He’s young, and the phrase “light-tower power” was in one of his Baseball America scouting reports.
He walked in about 10 percent of his plate appearances, and his strikeout rate isn’t excessive. Neal may be able to handle an outfield corner again (rather than just first base). Some guy on the Internet said he saw Neal playing outfield in instructional league.
Also, Augusta’s not a great hitting environment, so his numbers are probably a little better than they seem, and he finished the season strong.
Baseball Prospectus projects that if he follows a normal development path, based on his age and performance so far, he’ll peak as a .270/.360/.460 player in the bigs, which is about average for a corner outfielder.

20.8 percent, according to firstinning.com, and it’s not really that high. He doesn’t make the top-30 list for highest strikeout rate in the SAL.
Also — 4 home runs at home, 11 on the road. Augusta is a very hard place to hit for power.

voting Downs now—he already did real good at High A, is not that old at 24 and I like the versatility. Considering Ochoa was on the bigleague roster most of last year despite being overmatched as a hitter.
Looking again at Thomas Neal—he walked 3X as much as Angel V., and struck out a little less. And is 3 yrs older, at 21—both have August birthdays. Neal led the Augusta regulars in OBP and SLG. Too late, I already voted Downs.
not intending to hijack, I’m wondering where will Angel celebrate his #21 on Aug 17, 2011?
